Next WNY TU Chapter Meeting: Tuesday, November 27, 2012, 7:30 pm at the Donovan American

Legion Post, 3210 Genesee Street, Cheektowaga, New York. Fly tying starts at 6 p.m. Please bring green

thread, because we will be tying Woolly Buggers.

Our speaker, for the “entertainment” portion of the meeting, will be Ms. Margaret Wooster of Buffalo

Niagara River Keeper. This presentation promises to be a highly informative discussion of an important

area resource once thought to be “dead”. Ms. Wooster was to be our speaker at the October meeting, which

had to be cancelled because of weather. She has kindly agreed to talk with us this month. Please join us.

President’s Report

Greetings, Fellow Anglers and Conservationists,

OK, one more time. (You’ve heard that somewhere before, right?)

With the cancelation of the October meeting due to tropical storm Sandy, we were unable to have our elections.

Though we have no unopposed offices on the slate, our current bylaws require that we make nominations available

from the floor. So…elections will take place at our November membership meeting.

Our chapter’s financial and CEI reports are complete. Once again the “numbers” confirm what I’ve known all

along: WNYTU is an active, involved organization which puts our “money where our mouth is” when it comes to

conserving and protecting our coldwater resources. “Thank you”, to all of you who participate in the process. You

make us look good.

Some of you will remember, from a couple of years ago, the reintroduction of the Deepwater Ciscoes.

Unfortunately, the experiment failed, and none of the Ciscoes survived. The Deepwater Ciscoe, also known as

“bloater”, is native to Lake Ontario but has not been present since 1983. So, the question is, why is it important to

reintroduce an extirpated species? The answer is the Deepwater Ciscoe has something that the alewife and rainbow

smelt, the current forage fish for Lake Trout, lack, namely, Thiamin. Yup, Vitamin B1. When the Lakers forage on

the alewife and rainbow smelt, both invasive species, the thiaminase condition causes problems of reproductive

failure due to the vitamin B deficiency. Furthermore, Dr. Chris Goddard, Executive Secretary of the Great Lakes

Fishery Commission has stated that, “Re-establishing Deepwater Ciscoes in the lake will reduce opportunities for

new invasive species to colonize the offshore, deepwater zone and fill the niche that bloaters are most suited to fill.”

Once again Margaret Wooster, of Buffalo Niagara River Keeper, has agreed to be our

guest speaker. The Buffalo Niagara River Keeper is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Clean Water Act.

This will be the last newsletter you’ll see before the Christmas party, so I would be remiss if I didn’t mention it.

As in previous years, this event is NOT a public meeting but, rather, a membership social function complementing

the holiday season. As a member of WNYTU, please feel free to bring your spouse or significant other. The

Christmas party will take place on Thursday, December 13th, 2012, starting at 7pm., at the Donovan Post. I would

encourage you to come out and join us for the evening festivities. Bring a wrapped gift, valued at $10 to $15, for

the Yankee Swap. Please let us know if you are coming so we can plan accordingly.

We ALL live downstream. Please come out and support YOUR local chapter, become involved.

See you at the meeting.

Gary Coons, WNYTU Chapter President.

The Banquet will be held on March 23, 2013, at Lucarelli’s Banquet Center in Lackawanna.

As you can see, our list of contributors is growing. However, to make this effort successful, continued

support is needed. If you know a company, small business, individual or group of individuals that you

think would be interested in contributing, please let me know. I would be very happy to speak with them

and to discuss what we do and how they can help through contributing at a sponsorship level comfortable

for them. I can be reached at [email protected] or 716-481-7003.

As a reminder, here are the 2013 Annual Banquet Sponsorship Levels. All donors will be recognized in

our monthly newsletter unless anonymity is preferred:

With your help, we can continue to grow this event and further enable our chapter to fulfill its mission.

Thanks, Bill.

Annual Awards: While we are on the subject of the Annual Banquet, it should be noted that one of the

important purposes of the event is to recognize those who deserve special mention for their contributions to

WNY Trout Unlimited and its mission. The recognition comes in the form of our Annual Awards. Mr.

David Tooke is our Awards Committee Chairman. He has filed the following summary. If you would like

to submit nominations for a potential recipient, please send the name(s) to him ([email protected]) no

later than the date of our Chapter meeting in February, 2013.

Rising Trout Award: This award is given to someone who has been a rising star in our local chapter.

Rick Kinecki Humanitarian Award: Rick demonstrated a selfless dedication towards serving others.

This award is given to an individual who, we feel, possesses those same qualities.

Cold Water Fisheries Enhancement Award: This award is usually given to an individual for dedication

to restoring, enhancing and protecting our cold water fisheries.

Cal Arthur President’s Award: An award that is up to the discretion of the chapter president.

Silver Trout Award: This award is the highest chapter level award that can be given. It is presented to

someone for chapter service that has been above and beyond the norm.

Professional Communications Award: This award is given to a professional journalist in WNY who

dedicates his or her writing to the love of the outdoors and the many sporting and conservation activities

that we enjoy in this part of the our state.

Good Friend of WNY TU: This is an award that recognizes someone for indirect support of our mission

Decade of Service Award: This award is given to someone who has served the chapter for 10 years or

more.

From Stream Projects Chairman, Mr. Chuck Godfrey: [DEC Fisheries Biologist] Scott Cornett has

sent us pictures (Ed. Note: Please see Photo Section, later in this newsletter.) of the October 31 high water

event on the North Branch of Wiscoy Creek. This development was a result of rainfall from Hurricane

Sandy. All the structures have held up very well over the last year and a half since completion of the

project. (The pictures are just of the lunker sites; because, obviously, the instream overhead cover of the

lunker itself is under water even at low flows. The ability of the structures to withstand the high water event

was expected, because the North Branch is a relatively low gradient, low velocity stream, which is why it

was chosen for the first use of wooden lunkers in NYS. As can be seen in the photos, the trees which we

planted in the riparian areas also seem be holding their own. Again, this was expected; because they are

mostly in the extended flood plain, where the velocities are really low as the stream floods and disperses as

nature intended. So, we anticipate good survival.

Publicity: In recent news articles, Mr. Dave Barus has called attention to WNYTU’s “Trout in the

Classroom” project. As an example, here is a link to a story on the MetroWNY website:

Rod,_Gun__Game_Western_New_York_science_classrooms_raise_wild_trout.html . Thanks, Dave!

Here are the photos, furnished by Mr. Scott Cornett, mentioned in Mr. Godfrey’s report. Mr.

Cornett had observed that the North Branch had actually been a few inches higher earlier in the

day. It had nearly been at bankful stage. Per Mr. Cornett, “Everything working nicely”.

Here is an overview of site locations:

Turning from the North Branch to another of our area’s streams, as many of you know, a fish passage was recently

constructed on the Chautauqua Creek. Fly fisher, Mr. David Lanz has spent many hours on the Chautauqua and

reports that, this fall, the fish seem to be spread further than previously. He suspects that the fish passages are

“helping to restore the waterway to its more natural state”. Here’s a result of one of Mr. Lanz’ recent outings.

While it was not taken

above the dam, this fish

certainly makes a nice

photo. The successful

fisher forwards these

details: “Chautauqua

Creek provided this 8.25

pound beauty in early

November. The fish was

taken on a white

streamer (bunny fur) on

a 9 foot / 8 weight rod

using a WF-8-F with a

sink tip in the fast water.

The fish was quickly

released in hopes that it

would make more!”
