    Installing and Troubleshooting Networks

Selecting and Installing Network Interface CardWhen selecting a network interface card (NIC), consider the following three things: 1)the speed and type of network to which you areattaching; 2) the type of cable you are using and; 3) thetype of expansion slot you will use.

Once you have selected the NIC and installed it into theslot, set up network connections by installing the drivers:

    y Install the driver.

y Verify successful installation by clickingStart>>click Control Panel>>double-click SystemProperties>>click Hardware tab>>click Device Manager>>right-click on the NICfrom the list of devices>>click Properties on shortcut menu>>look for conflicts orerrors as reported by the Device Manager.

Questions to Ask When Connecting to a Network

y Is the PC using dynamic or static IP addressing?

y If static IP addressing is used, what are the IP address, the subnet mask, anddefault gateway for the computer?

y Does the PC use DNS? If so, what are the IP addresses of the DNS servers?

y Is a proxy server used to connect to other networks (including the Internet)?

If so, what is the IP address of the proxy server?
