Trophic model of the Balearic Islands ecosystem
M. Díaz-Valdés, F. Sánchez, J. Moranta, C. Barberá and E. Massutí
XAVIER JANSÀ
Why?4. To contextualize the oligotrophic ecosystems of the Balearic Islands
from a global perspective, including adjacent areas of westernMediterranean, from: (i) the estimation of the degree of connectivitybetween populations of the continental margin of the north-westernMediterranean and the Balearic Islands, using geochemical markers inhake otoliths; and, (ii) the analysis of information from fishingexploitation on the peninsular coast and the archipelago.
Different temporal scales and organization levels(population, community and ecosystem).
Trophic model of the Balearic Islands ecosystem
Experience in the model: Sánchez & Olaso (2004)
It has been developed in other adjacent areas of the Mediterranean.
Ecopath EwE modelGeneral characteristics
• Mass balance model (Ecopath), supplemented by dynamic modules:
• temporal (Ecosim)
• spatial (Ecospace)
• Models the trophic flows:
• Trophic interactions
• Resources
• Fishing fleets can be introduced as predators
• Analyze in detail the system, integrating the available information to obtain a quantitative representation of the system
Ecopath EwE model
• The model combines estimations of biomass and consumption of allcomponents (species or functional groups), with the analysis offlows between the elements of the ecosystem.
• Ecopath equation describes secondary production for systemelements:
Pi=∑Bj∙M2i+Yi+Ei+BAi+Pi(1-EEi)
Bi∙(P/B)i=∑Bj∙(Q/B)i∙DCij+Yi+Ei+BAj+Bi∙(P/B)i∙(1-EEi)
• The ecosystem is modeled using a set of simultaneous linearequations (one for each group “i” in the system)
Ecosystem description
•Biomass (Bi)
•Production/biomass ratio (P/B)i
•Consumption/biomass ratio (Q/B)i
•Ecotrophic efficiency EEi
•Unassimilated food (U/Q)i
•Detritus fate
•Diets Dcij
•Total fishery catch (Y)i
•Migration (E)i
Definition of functional groups
Model parameterization
Basic parameters of the model, threeof them must be known, the fourth canbe estimated
Required, but provided by the model
Requires diets information, catch and migrations rates
Model requirements
Bi∙(P/B)i=∑Bj∙(Q/B)i∙DCij+Yi+Ei+BAj+Bi∙(P/B)i∙(1-EEi)
Functional groups
•Functional groups are the elements that represent the system
•Portion of population of one species, individual species or species groupswith common characteristics
•Represent all trophic levels of the system from TL= 1 (primary producers) toTL= 4-5 (apex predators)
Definition
1. Functional groups required for economic or biological importance
2. Functional groups representing ontogenetic stages (Multi-stanza)
3. For other fish species with no clear economic or biological relevance: hierarchicalanalysis with the information of diets
4. The remaining species were grouped according to taxonomic and ecological criteria
5. Functional groups related to detritus: discards, sea snow and deposited detritus

Main indicators related to ecosystem trophicflows, information theory and analysis of foodwebs
• It also provides information of fishing activity, with a low total catch and primary productionrequired to sustain the fishery values, indicating astate of operating medium-low. The averagetrophic level of the catch is low, due to the largeamount of trawl-discards on platform
• Global ecosystem trophic flows in system: Allflows can be summarized in the value of thetotal system transfers (TST), which is an index ofthe relative size of the ecosystem, and in theBalearic Sea is low

System summary statistic
• Connectivity index (CI) and system omnivory index(SOI) are used to describe food web structure:
• CI: ratio between number of real connectionsand potential number of connections
• Ecosystems progress from a linear shapewith low CI to a form of network withhigh CI
• SOS reflects the trophic state and complexityof the community
• High values, as in Balearic Sea, indicatecomplex food webs, typical of matureecosystems

(and comparison to other areas)
The total system throughput (TST) is an indirect indicator of the relative size of theecosystem. In Balearic Sea is low in comparison with other models ofupwelling, temperate and subtropical regions systems. This is consistent with theoligotrophy of the Mediterranean.
The results related to biomass and trophic flows (in terms ofconsumption, catch, production, respiration and flow to detritus) are higher than inother Mediterranean systems, making them more similar to systems of tropical andtemperate shelfs. This is probably due to the high importance of benthicinvertebrates and detritus in the Balearic system.
The ascendency value is a measure of the maturity of the system, and is similar toother models and higher than other Mediterranean systems. It is related to therecycling of matter and energy, and to the mean path length. The results indicatethat the Balearic Sea is in a developmental medium-high stage.
Conclusions
The total transfer efficiency (TE) is between the common values reported in theliterature for aquatic systems.
The system omnivorism index is relatively high. This indicates the complexity of foodwebs as was also reflected in the Lindemann spine. In this representation, themediterranean analyzed systems are distributed in 6-7 discrete trophic levels, andthe Balearic Sea system in 12 levels.
The trophic level of trawl fishery target species are red shrimp=3.212, mullet=3.432and hake=4.256. The trophic level of the catch is 2.83, similar value, although slightlylower than in other Mediterranean ecosystems. The 2.83 value corresponds tofunctional groups that feed directly on primary producers and / or detritus. This isdue to the high discards produced in trawl fishery, especially in the platform. That isrelated to medium-low yields of the fishery.
Primary production required to sustain fishery, has a relatively low value comparedto the Mediterranean exploited systems. This indicates a moderate impact of fishingactivity in the area.
