Another unforgettable time in Darjeeling"Darjeeling, also known as the Queen of Hills, hold the name true in every sense. Visit thisplace during Spring, the blooming season. From honeymooners to those with an adventurersheart, there is a surprise stored for everyone in Darjeeling.

The beauty of watching the sun go down, painting the majestic Kanchenjunga in orange hues isan unmatched experience. On a clear day one can sit and gaze at the Kanchenjunga from thesunset point, behind the Mall.

There are several curios lined across the Mall. A little stop over would help you pick-up souvenirfor your near ones at very low price.

As you walk towards the mall from the Hill Cart road you would pass several cafeterias, eateriesand curio shops. Kaventers and Glenerys are a must visit for every tourist. I would suggest youan English breakfast at Kaventers and a Continental dinner at Glenerys.

There are several sightseeing options in Darjeeling. You can either book a car or trek to theseplaces. Few places that are a must visit are Japanese Peace Pagoda, Dali Monastery, TibetanSelf Help Refugee Camp, Tea Garden, Tenzing Norgey Rock, Batasia Loop, GhoomMonastery, Zoological Garden, HMI and the Botanical Garden.

Darjeeling is one of the most affordable hill stations of India. You can plan a shoe string budgettrip or spend a luxurious vacation here. There are several budget hotels in Darjeeling startingRs. 500 for a night. You can put up at New Elgin, Windamare - The Heritage Hotel, Mayfair,Gymkhana Resorts etc if you plan for a luxurious stay." - Sumana Chakraborty, , Apr 7,2015

NEVER SAY DIE FOR DARJEELING"every bengali visits darjeeling atleast thrice in life1)in school days along with parents duringsummer vacation2)with wife for honeymoon3)along with wife & children.last november when ireached darjeeling ,this was actually my 5th visit this time, with my wife & child& in a time whenbengalis have found new love in gangtok rejecting old darling darjeeling for fear of disturbance.after staying 4 nights in darjeeling,i felt, the hill queen is also feeling lonely, weeping silently forlack of tourists but the spirit of darjeeling is grossly intact.

Food, sight-seeing and shopping: i took joy ride in toy train from darjeeling to ghum.it looked likemini world.tourists from london,paris,japan,mumbai,gujrat.....all were waiting to have amemorable journey in heritage train.when we reached BATASIA LOOP ,the train against thebackground of snow white kanchanjunga looked like a true himalayan queen.

THE MALL is as beautiful as ever....i was overjoyed to have a cup of nice tea with typicaldarjeeling flavor at only rs 5.The back side of mall where the old lady sang rabindrasangeet insatyajit rays movie KANCHANJANGHA is now lovers paradise.i also felt nostalgic & my 2 yr oldson was silently watching hills to give us some space.

Page 4/16

Next morning when i reached TIGER HILL at 5 o clock morning i remembered poorRABINDRANATH TAGORE who failed to see sunrise at tiger hill in his all 7 visits due to cloudbut i was lucky again to enjoy a breath taking sun rise.the foreign tourists were awe struck.ifound one gujrati couple to utter MANTRA while observing the color changes onkanchanjunga.darjeeling is place for RED PANDA ....my son was excited to see the activities ofred panda in zoo...adjacent to mountaineering institute.

Activities & things to do: dont miss evening snacks in glenery or keventers restaurant.you mayvisit mirik lake & can shop in pashupoti market ,nepal on midway.shopping in mall area is alovely experience.you can trek to sandakfu.or can take mountaineering training in institute

Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: if you have motion sickness go darjeeling fromnjp through main road.otherwise go through pankhabari....it is shorter & view is better.chose ahotel in mall ....try heritage hotels .....kanchanjunga is best visible in october .....fix a date inoctober end after durgapuja festival is over.always book toy train in advance like normal trainbooking.darjeeling mail uttarbanga express kanchankonya express are good option fromkolkata (sealdah)but flight to bagdogra is better option.from njp to darjeeling ,its 3 hr journey bycar & 7 hrs by toy train." - Alip Ray, Kolkata, Oct 3, 2010

Tinchuley and Baramangwa"The beautiful Tinchuley village is 30 km away from Darjeeling. We drove down to Tinchuley intwo hours through magnificent mountainous countryside. Location was selected away from themain road to avoid too many flocking and destroying its ambiance. A few families with biggeraccommodation were convinced to spare a few rooms and convert these to lodges withexpertise from Help Tourism once permission from WBFDC was obtained. We were at Bara Mangwa in the Teesta Valley of Darjeeling Hills. It is a village where onlyprofession was agriculture even a couple of years back. Bara Mangwa was used for rafting onthe Teesta only. Local school buildings were used for putting up people coming for day timerafting. But it had future as a home-stay tourist destination as the village had prospect forcreating rock climbing facilities, caving in near by caves and bird watching. Nature is bountifulhere. Hills are covered with green pine and oak trees. The gurgling Teesta runs through anarrow gorge. Rainfall in upper reaches creates waterfalls when it rains. When we neared BaraMangwa, we saw three such rainfalls coming down the slopes.

Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Best of such places is that the guest need not follow aroutine. We could wake up when we felt like. I saw guests walking off into the pine and oakforest with lunch hampers for a picnic. Every place is a picnic spot. I took a path into the forest. Icrossed the village monastery and a small burial place where guesthouse owner’s dead areburied. I found nameless wild flowers. I saw sparrows, warblers, thrushes and cuckoos. I saw aneagle sitting on a tree.

Piyush, Sapna and little Krish joined me in my walk carrying a hamper for lunch and a two literbottle of mineral water. Over the year, I have found Himalayan natural water safe for me. There

Page 5/16

were seasonal waterfalls and rains two day earlier had send down enough water to make thosefalls beautiful. When we reached a watch tower the glorious views of the Mt. Kanchenjunga andits ranges greeted us. The jungle was alive with minivets, Flycatchers, Mynas, Orioles,Parakeets, Swifts and Woodpeckers

Activities & things to do: Next day I went for a walk into the Teesta gorge while Piyush went forrock climbing. Sapna took a boy guide into the nursery to see blooming flowers and medicinalplants. While descending along the road, I stopped at a tea shop for tea. The shop owner andhis wife were at the counter selling some fried eatables, too. While talking he told some incomewas coming into family kitty as his two sons were working in tourism connected work. I washappy that efforts were bearing fruits.

As I touched the bottom of the gorge and looked up, I was engulfed by the Himalayas on all sideand in front was the green Teesta amid forest. I saw two rafts struggling with rapids and raftersshouting in thrill. After spending an hour at the bottom, I ascended on the road and went to rockclimbing area where I was greeted by huffing and puffing Piyush. He was thrilled after rockclimbing and all praise for Indian instructors. He did not know that Nepali boys were bornclimbers and no climbing school in USA can teach them.

We walked back to the nursery and began preparing for our villages in Sikkim. Siliguri was only55 km away and we would be able to make into Gangtok before dusk.At Tinchley, you rest. While at Bara Mangwa, you raft, trek and rock climb

Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Reach both destination by road from Darjeeling.Nice clean home stays welcome you.Food is bio-organic and wholesome." - Partha De sarkar, Kolkata, Oct 19, 2009

Land of monumental mountains"There is no finer place than Darjeeling to steep yourself in the grandeur and beauty of thetowering snow clad mountains. The best place to spend difficult months of May-June-July toavoid the scorching heat of the plains. An ideal tourist destination for the entire country.

Food, sight-seeing and shopping: There are a variety of Restaurants where you get a widerange of full course meals or some quick snacks. Tigerhill sunrise, Ghoom Buddhist Monastery and Batasia Loop,Ava Art Galley, HimalayanMountaineering Institute, Zoological Park, Tenzing Rock, View of tea gardens, Darjeeling PeacePagoda, Dhirdham Tample,Rock garden and Lloyd Botanical garden.Places within Darjeeling:Chowrasta is an ideal place to take a relaxed stroll. Benches are lined on the Chowrastha and ifyou are tired you can sit there and eat MOMO and have a cup of Tea. The Chowrastha hasmany curio shops that sell paintings, fabrics, wood-carvings, carpets and many other localproducts.

Activities & things to do: Darjeeling is esentially a teas producing Centre. There are various

Page 6/16

handicraft centres which produces wood carvings, carpets and woollens.

Since the entire economy of Darjeeling is dependant on Tea goods and tourists, proper steps tobe taken to ensure good transportation systems.

Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: One has to first reach Siliguri(New Jalpaiguri) tovisit Darjeeling. About 10 kms from Siliguri is the Bhagdhogra airport and also connected withmajor airports of the country. From SIligury the journey to Darjeeling can be either by road or rail. If travelling by bus the travelis about 80 kms and takes about 3 hours. You can engage a smaller private vehicle which takesa shorter route and the distance is reduced by about 15 kms.The toy train journey can be taken if you ae not in a hurry as it takes about 8 hours. All throughthe journey till Darjeeling, the rail line crosses the road almost hundred times." - Radha Balu, ,Jan 30, 2007
