Repentance, fasting, prayer, and works of love—the discipline of Lent—help us to wage our sp iritual warfare. I invite you, therefore, to commit yourse lves to this struggle and confess your sins, asking our Father for strength to perse vere in your Lenten discipline." --LBW Ash Wednesday Se rvice Lent begins this month, the 40 days of repentance, prayer, fasting, and works of love leading up to Easter. Lent ca lls us to "struggle against everything that leads us away from love of God and neighbor." And it is a struggle! Like our Lord Jesus tempted by the devil in the wilderness, we too are constantly tempted and assa ulted by sin, death, despair, and the devil. Lent allows us to admit the truth about our daily struggles, and to let the living God be our help and sa lvation. What will your "discipline of Lent" be this year, to help you in your struggle? It is not easy, but together we will repent, fast, pray and do works of love. And we will find ourse lves me t and strengthened by the living Je sus Christ who died for us on the Cross, and who rose again on Easter so that we might have Life everlasting. Join us for solemn Ash Wednesday worship, March 1 at 7:30 p.m. Ashes will be available at the church doors and at Union Station during the day on Ash Wednesday. Lenten Vespers (a 20 minute se rvice of Evening Pra yer) will be held each Thursday in Lent at 7:00 p.m., beginning March 2. Lenten Devotionals and Self-Denial Folders are available in the back of the church to help you keep a holy Lent. Our Bible Stu dies continue each week during Lent. If it's been a while since your Bible has been opened, come and read the Word together Sunday morning at 9 a.m., Wednesday at 10:30 a.m., and/or Thursday at 6 p.m. Se rve others this Lent by collecting items for Lutheran World Relief Pe rsonal Care kits . Ea ch Su nday in Lent we'll focus on a different item (so ap, combs, wash cloths, etc.) and asse mble them in time for Easter. Join us each Sunday for worship at 10:15, and God grant us all a holy Lent, and so an even more joyful Ea ster. --Pa stor Mills+ Pastoral Acts New Members Mindy Durham Kim Ketchersid Leo Macenze Jia Xu February 5, 2017 “We welcome you into the body of Christ at Trinity”

Operation Christmas Child And now faith, hope and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love. Corinthians 13:13 We are well into 2017 and if you are like me tired of the snow and cold and longing for spring to arrive. As I was confined to the house for a few days recently (due to snow and ice) my thoughts turned to OCC 2017, what we have left from our last packing party, and what we need for this year. Time flies and I want us to share Gods love to even more children through a simple shoe box gift in 2017. I encourage everyone to remember OCC while out shopping. The collection box is waiting in the church narthex. Thought I would share some awesome statistics with you. In 2016 total shoe boxes collected.

Globally 11,485,662 USA 9,121,199 CT 37,571 Southwest CT 10,257 (we were a big part of this) That’s a whole lot of children who will know they are loved and will have a chance to learn of Gods love for them. Thank you for your continued support of the OCC ministry. Blessings Barbara Mourer OCC Chairperson and Relay Coordinator

Seafarers International House Where do I start? The last 2 weeks have been crazy, crazy good, crazy busy.

One ship has been here for almost 2 weeks unloading steel. I have never seen so much rebar in all sizes in my entire life. The cargo came from Turkey. I showed the crew the huge pile of scrap piled up at another terminal and jokingly told them that much of the time that scrap goes to Turkey and then we buy it back again. Probably true.

This crew were all from Thailand and most of them spoke very little English which at times made helping them very challenging. We did a lot of shopping. I finally figured out that they kept asking me to take them to the outlet stores. I told them that those stores were too far away so they finally settled on T J Maxx and DSW shoes and the stores off of exit 9. They kept telling me they were looking for “cosi” and “E Y”. I never figured out “cosi” but determined “EY” was Levi’s. We shopped every day often until 10 when the stores closed then stopped for MacDonald’s and Dunkin Donuts. They were all very nice young men, all happy to be able to get off the ship and shop in America. I think they sampled everything MacDonald’s had to offer. Imagine when I had to put in this order through the drive thru. I

think the first night they thought we were pranking them with our strange and very large order because we would buy enough for the entire crew of 16.

At the same time, I had a ship that was unloading salt brought here from Mexico. The crew were Greek, Myanmar and Filipino. The 3rd engineer was the only crewman who had a visa and was able to get off the ship. He and I also shopped every day. We hit all the stores from the Apple store, to Walmart, to T-Mobile, to Best Buy, etc. We shopped for all the crew often loaded with so much stuff that the terminal even helped drive everything down to the gangway when we returned. We also always ended all these trips with a stop at MacDonald’s and Dunkin Donuts. One night we bought 100 chicken nuggets all for 1 crewman.

Also in port was a ship unloading liquid asphalt brought here from Spain and a tanker unloading gasoline. The Captain of the tanker told me what a stressful job he had. “I am carrying 300,000 barrels of gasoline. Can you imagine if my ship hit that bridge and gasoline got into the harbor or if something went wrong and the ship blew up. It would be worse than the Hiroshima bomb, everything around here would be gone.”

Page 6: Trinity Window March 2017trinitylutherannh.org/tlcwindow/Trinity_Window_March...repentance, prayer, fasting, and works of love leading up to Easter. Lent calls us to "struggle against

And while I was doing a lot of driving back and forth it was a time when the men were laughing and relaxing and having a good time. It was a chance to spend time and talk to them about their families, their countries and their lives as seafarers.

Like I said, it’s been crazy but definitely crazy good.
