Jerrold Jones rushed for 215 yards on just 17 carries including a school record 90-yard run. Matt Federle added 77 yards on just three carries including a 72-yarder. Quarterback Dan DesPlaines com- pleted 18 of 20 passes for 243 yards and three touchdowns with five going to Derek Boles for 82 yards. Jason Marshall led the way with seven tackles. DePauw 35, Hope 14: DePauw defeated visiting Hope 35-14 and, in the process, totaled 388 rushing yards and 498 total yards. The Tigers scored in each quarter and led by as much as 28-7 in the third. Quarterback Ross Wiethoff rushed for a career-high 158 yards on just 16 carries and running back Jeremiah Marks added a career-best 144 yards on 16 attempts. SCAC’s Top Two Preseason Picks Battle at Blackstock

Tabbed by Street & Smith’s magazine as one of just nine Division III games to watch this season,today’s contest pits 3-0 Trinity University and 2-1 DePauw University. DePauw is 1-0 in the SouthernCollegiate Athletic Conference, while Trinity is playing its first conference contest of the season.

Trinity was picked by the SCAC coaches to win its 12th straight SCAC title, while DePauw waspicked to finish second. Trinity enters today’s game ranked ninth in this week’s coaches’ poll, 12th byD3football.com and 21st by Football Gazette.

LAST WEEKTrinity 51, Redlands 27: Trinity totaled a school and SCAC record 701 yards of offense including

389 on the ground on the way to a 51-27 win over visiting Redlands. Trinity scored on eight of its 11possessions. In that game the Tigers jumped out to a 37-0 lead in the third quarter before Redlandsscored 27 points in the final 15:27.

Jerrold Jones rushed for 215 yards on just 17 carries including a school record 90-yard run. MattFederle added 77 yards on just three carries including a 72-yarder. Quarterback Dan DesPlaines com-pleted 18 of 20 passes for 243 yards and three touchdowns with five going to Derek Boles for 82 yards.Jason Marshall led the way with seven tackles.

LAST YEAR’S MEETINGDePauw and 18th-ranked Trinity battled to a 17-17 tie through three quarters, but a 21-second

span early in the fourth spelled disaster for the visiting Tigers in a 26-24 loss in San Antonio.A bad snap on a punt resulted in a safety for Trinity with 10:35 remaining and on Trinity’s first play

from scrimmage after the free kick, Dan DesPlaines connected with Kolby Brailsford for a 69-yardscore to make it 26-17.

Ross Wiethoff drove the Tigers down the field in their final possession and teamed with BrianCulp on a 15-yard scoring pass. DePauw, however, was unable to recover the onside kick.

Trinity outgained DePauw 451-404 with DePauw holding a 132-98 advantage on the ground.Andy Yoder completed 10 of 20 passes for 167 yards and one score, while Wiethoff completed sixof nine for 105 yards and two touchdowns. Wiethoff led DePauw with 77 rushing yards on justseven carries. Jamarcus Shephard caught seven passes for 171 yards and two scores while also rushingfor 22 yards on three carries. Culp finished with five catches for 69 yards.

DesPlaines completed 21 of 30 passes for 353 yards and two scores. Jerrold Jones led Trinity with70 rushing yards on 21 carries and caught six passes for 46 yards. Brailsford hauled in just two catches,but for 116 yards.

Joshua Swift led DePauw with 12 tackles including a team-high 3.5 tackles for loss. Wacey Clarkeand Aaron Einhaus each recorded seven stops for Trinity.

LYNCH JUST THE NINTH DEPAUW COACH SINCE 1930This game marks the fourth of Bill Lynch’s DePauw career as just the ninth DePauw football coach

since 1930. Lynch took over in December for the retired Nick Mourouzis who directed the Tigers toa 138-87-4 mark in 23 seasons.

Lynch was the head coach at Butler from 1985 through 1989 and compiled a 36-12-3 record. TheBulldogs won four conference titles and advanced to the NCAA Division II playoffs in 1988. He wasthe head coach at Division I Ball State from 1995 through 2002 and his 1996 team won the Mid-American Conference championship and earned a Las Vegas Bowl appearance. The Cardinals also wonthe MAC West Division co-title in 2001. His final three teams at Ball State were recognized by theAmerican Football Coaches for outstanding graduation rates.

DEPAUW IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGSIn Division III statistics released earlier this week, DePauw’s Jamarcus Shephard ranks 28th with a

kickoff return average of 27.2 yards. He finished second in the nation last year. The Tigers are 24th inthe country in rushing offense with an average of 244.3 yards per game.

EVERYBODY’S ALL-AMERICANSenior wide receiver and kick returner Jamarcus Shephard was selected to every all-America

team as a kick returner at the conclusion of last season and was again a consensus preseason all-Americapick. Shephard was a Division III first team selection by D3football.com, Lindy’s and Street & Smith aswell as a second team choice by Football Gazette. Shephard returned 19 kickoffs last season for anaverage of 34.7 yards including a pair of touchdowns against Millsaps. His average ranked second inDivision III. In all, he finished with four returns of 74 or more yards last year and has returned threekickoffs for scores in his career.

TIGERS ESTABLISH GROUND GAMEThe Tigers’ 388 rushing yards against Hope were the third most in school history and the most since

they had 389 at Rhodes on September 5, 1998. The school record is 532 yards against Principia onOctober 11, 1975. The Tigers’ 60 rushing attempts were their most since they had 60 against Blackburnon October 13, 2001. The last time they had more attempts in a game was on November 14, 1998,when they totaled 64 against Wabash.

TWO TOP 100 YARDSRoss Wiethoff and Jeremiah Marks each topped the 100-yard rushing plateau last week marking the first time for such a DePauw feat since Matt King

(199 yards) and Jackson Rust (116) did so against Blackburn on October 13, 2001. Marks is just the fourth DePauw player to rush over for 100 yards in twodifferent games as a freshman. Tom Campbell (1955) and Johnathon Stigall (1995) each did it three times, while Sam Juarascio (1972) did it once. Wiethoffhas now topped the 100-yard mark twice in his career.

CHASING RECORDSJamarcus Shephard broke the DePauw career record for kickoff return yards and now has 1,249 on 43 returns for an average of 29.0 yards per return.

Shephard’s 3,257 career all-purpose yards rank fifth in school history and he needs 161 to pass Tim Weaver (1982-86) and 186 to pass John Stephens (1999-02). Terry Dickey (1988-91) is the all-time leader with 5,240.

Shephard enters the game with 137 career pass receptions which ranks seventh in school history. He needs three to pass Weaver and seven to move aheadof Stephens. Jay True (1977-80) is the all-time leader with 195. Shephard’s 1,817 receiving yards rank sixth in school history and he needs 45 to pass JoeSchoen (1997-00) and 90 to pass Weaver. Dan Ryan (1999-02) is the all-time leader with 2,913.

Three second-half Trinity touchdowns and a nearly seven-minute game-ending drive erased DePauw’s 13-10 halftime lead and sent the Tigers toa 30-26 defeat to the team that was ranked in the top five in every DivisionIII poll. DePauw held a 13-10 halftime lead, but an early-second half scoregave Trinity the lead for good and a fake field goal attempt that went fora touchdown just minutes later gave the visitors a 23-13 lead which theynever relinquished. Trinity outgained DePauw 444-278 and possessed theball for 37:33.

After DePauw closed themargin to 35-33, Trinity came right back with a 12-play, 72-yard drivecapped by Jeremy Boyce’s 4-yard run with 6:35 left.
