Grace and peace to you all! Well, this is it. My final contribution to The Trinity Trumpet as your senior pastor! As I thought about what I would say to you, my mind started thinking about all the wonderful times we ve had together over the last three years. These things I share wont be in any particular order—just musings as they come to mind. Permit me to reminisce a bit. Allowing for my four vacations a year, I think I have preached about 150 different sermons since coming to Trinity. One of my first I still have people comment on—the one where I preached Keep your forkthe best is yet to come!Remember that one? I know that my preaching style and how I interpret Scripture has been different than most of your previous pastors, even from my colleagues Dale and Dean. But my goal has always been to preach the gospel in order to help you grow closer to God by being constantly molded and shaped into disciples for Christ. So forgive me for my slightly questionable comments, my corny illustrations and my attempts at humor. Im no Billy Graham or Rick Warren, but I did my best. One of the things that has stood out to me in my 26 years of ministry has been that in each church we ve served, there has always been one child or young person who has touched our hearts or have connected with in a special way. Trinity is no exception. Dont get me wrong, I love ALL our children equally and was delighted when we recently restarted Sunday School downtown. But I have to confess, little Nicholas Dagen is a special little boy. Every Sunday morning he comes to church with his grandmother, Ann Marie Desjardins. He makes a bee-line for me and Pat to get a hug. Ann Marie has been so faithful, bringing him to big churchand Sunday School and makes our Sunday mornings complete! Of course, there are all the special events at Trinity that have meant so much to us, like all the Lunch Bunch events at the JMB, the Trunk or Treat, the church picnics, the special dinners at the Retreat House, the outdoor services under the pavilion, the movie nights and firepit socials at the FLC. The list goes on and on. These have been wonderful opportunities to get to know you over these last three years that will help us remember you always. Finally, I just want to say that, as with the children, we have made lifelong friends at each church we ve served. Many of you have been so gracious to invite us into your homes for dinner parties, birthday parties, baptismal, wedding and funeral receptions, as well as other social gatherings. We ve even gotten to get to know some of you on the golf course and fishing trips, which you all know I love to do. We will treasure our memories of you and hope to see many of you around Salisbury from time to time. Yes, there have been a few bumps in the road and not everyone has embraced our ministry. But that s ok! Not everyone embraced Jesus and His disciples either, so I figure Im in pretty good company. In closing, let me simply sayTHANK YOU! Thank you for your patience. Thank you for your faith- fulness to God and this church. Thank you for your forgiveness for my mistakes. Thank you for your gener- osity and being the family of God called Trinity. And thank you for providing me with an amazing staff. I said it when I first came here, and I say it now as I departI believe Trinitys best days are still ahead of you! And yes, the best is yet to come! With faith, hope and love guiding you (the greatest of these being love of course), keep loving one another as Jesus commanded us to do and you will be just fine. I leave you with one of my favorite Scripture passages. Jeremiah 29:11, For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Grace and peace to you all! Well, this is it. My final contribution to The Trinity Trumpet as your senior pastor! As I thought about what I would say to you, my mind started thinking about all the wonderful times we’ve had together over the last three years. These things I share won’t be in any particular order—just musings as they come to mind. Permit me to reminisce a bit. Allowing for my four vacations a year, I think I have preached about 150 different sermons since coming to Trinity. One of my first I still have people comment on—the one where I preached “Keep your fork…the best is yet to come!” Remember that one? But my goal has always been to preach the gospel in order to help you grow closer to God by being constantly molded and shaped into disciples for Christ. YOUTH PROGRAM ON HOLD FOR SUMMER

As a yearly occurrence, our youth program gets put on hold till the Fall due to vacations, sports, family events, and many other summertime activities. Therefore, we are letting you know that there will be no scheduled events this summer. Additionally, we want to express our deepest gratitude to Daegan Lappin for stepping in since last November to help coordinate our youth pro-gram. Daegan has been faithful and led our youth in Bible study and other fun events out at the FLC. Please make a point to thank Daegan personally if you see him.

A/V TECH NEEDED FOR SUNDAY MORNING

Sadly, our AV Tech, Josh Holland, will be leaving us in the end of June to pursue full-time employment in his field. This means we once again need to seek someone to run our sound and video system each Sunday morning. This is a PAID position requiring three hours each Sun-day plus availability for funerals and weddings. Please call the church office for a complete job description. This job has also been posted on INDEED.COM. Phone 410-749-5562 or email a resume to us at [email protected]

ASK THE REV

Q. I know that as Christians, we believe in the sacrifice of Jesus to atone for our sins and that the only route to salvation (heaven) is through our acceptance of Jesus as our Lord and Savior. What does this mean for other religious faiths who do not share the same belief (i.e. Muslims, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus)… is the assumption that the people of these faiths (who are not saved) go to hell?

Universalism is the idea that anyone who truly believes in some form of God, no matter what or who that God may be, will go to heaven. A variation of this view teaches that everyone, regardless of how they lived and what they believe, will eventually live in bliss forever. This is an idealist view that eases the minds of those who wish for a simplistic answer to life after death and who wish to ease their conscience for their deeds on earth. It is a tough question when we consider people who were raised in a different faith and perhaps have had little or no exposure to Christianity. Life and God himself is considered unfair if these people would be condemned to hell. While this is pleasant humanistic thought, it does not square with the truth of Scripture. The Bible is clear on several points that there is only one mediator between God and man, and that mediator is Christ Jesus ( 1 Tim. 2:5) and that without the shedding of blood, the blood that Christ shed for us, there is no remission or forgiveness of sin. (Hebrews 9:22) Since God is holy, He cannot be in the presence of sin and thus sinners will not spend eternal life in heaven with Him. But what about those who have never heard and are raised in a different culture and religious background? A tough question that I believe is answered in the life of Abraham. Abraham lived in a land that never heard of the true God. There were no churches or synagogues or places of worship. But there was some-thing in Abraham that caused him to leave his city and culture and search for the city whose builder and maker was God. (Hebrews 11:10) It is this blind faith that allowed Abraham to be the father of the nation of Israel and the line from which Christ our Savior descended. I truly believe that anyone who truly seeks God no matter where they are or what culture or religious background they were raised, will, like Abraham, find Him. Missionaries have been guided by the Holy Spirit to carry the message of the cross to those who earnestly seek the truth. This is the work of the Holy Spirit, a process that John Wesley called prevenient grace that is given to us even before we aware of all the truth laid down in Scripture. Yes there is only one way to God but it is available to all: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begot-ten son that whosoever believe in Him shall not parish but have eternal life. (John 3:16) The opinions expressed in this article are that of its author and do not necessarily represent the views of any other members or staff. Ask the Rev is a Trumpet newsletter feature where Rev. DeFino will answer your questions on the Bible, doctrine or religious beliefs and events. Send or call your questions into the church office and they will be answered in future issues. Have a question? Ask the Rev!!!

UNITED METHODIST WOMEN

by Ginny Riffle, President

Summer is near and I hope and pray you all have a safe summer. I’m so hoping we can start gathering in our Circles in September. I want to thank all the UMW for either

leading or coming to the Mother’s Day Worship Services. I’m so proud of all of you and thankful we have Ruth Ann Savage to give a beautiful message.

Don't forget we’re hosting the:

Salisbury District UMW Spring Meeting Family Life Center Pavilion

Saturday, June 5, 2021 8:30-11:00 a.m.

Please come with your chair, mask and introduce yourself to other

United Methodist Women in our District. A Light breakfast will be served.

All women of the church are always welcome to come.

I’m including the poem Sylvia Robertson read at our Mother’s Day Worship Service. It sums up what we do in the UMW and I

love the poem. Enjoy and have a wonderful summer.

Love, Faith and Happiness always!

Trinity United Methodist Women

At Trinity, some years ago, Our women formed a group, you know.

The date was 1926— And ladies had some project picks.

“Missionary” was in their name, And their support was for the same. But then they added “Aid” for more, Then helped the needy and the poor.

Next that name changed, and I confess,

They served as “WSCS.” Thirty years went on before

“United’s” part of name we wore. We’ve had great leaders on the way, And two went on, we’d like to say To each be preachers ‘till this day!

Our circles have their studies, too.

They study scripture, sharing views. The leaders meet and help us plan What we can do and what to pan. Twice yearly lunch is what we do:

With grace, devotions, programs, too. A meeting’s next, before we go

To say how best to spend our dough!

We’ve had some help from ASP.

They cooked our chicken for no fee! Then we could make the salad, so

With baked goods sales, it all would go.

A missionary came our way. We gave some help to her one day. She serves Australia in this year;

She shares the gospel they can hear.

We help at Deer’s Head in our way, As folks there note the month’s birthdays.

When little ones are baptized here, We give a Bible to each dear.

When Faith Filled Women come to town, We love their talks, the food, the sound. And monthly Faith Talks are great, too:

We hear what Christian ladies do.

Christmas is the time we fill The stockings for those needy, still.

Then we all gather for a lunch, And you will find a happy bunch!

We give from money that we raise To groups that help in many ways.

HOPE and HALO, Deer’s Head, too, And Urban Ministries we do. Our ASP helps others, too:

We give to them for what they do.

We gave a freezer to our church, And all were glad we filled the search. Of course, to Conference, District, too,

We give, as they have much to do.

The COVID gave a little pause. How could we give to every cause?

But members answered every prayer: They each gave cash to help out there.

Then leaders later had a plan

For funds to lend a helping hand. We ordered tumblers we could sell

For hot or cold, they functioned well. They’re very handy, as you know,

Please get yours now before they go! The profits go to fill a need

For shelter, rest, and those to feed.

We prayed that God would guide our way To plan this service, Mothers’ Day. And it’s our goal that we will say

The Christian message, if we may!

Now we look forward to next year, As there are plans we want to steer. Our ladies are so great you know: They back each other as we go.

When we are up or when we’re low, They lend a hand and help us so. The Holy Spirit leads each one,

We’re very glad for God’s great Son.

Written with love by Sylvia Robertson

SUMMARY:

The improvement in Net Income compared to the same period in 2020 is due to a decrease in personnel and program

Summer is rapidly approaching and I know we are all looking forward to getting outside more and being able to shed the mask and still keep our social distance. The winter was long although not extremely cold, but with a lot of our citizens getting the Covid vaccine it is letting us have more freedom than we have had in the last 12 months. We still need to be cautious about the normal health issues related to the summer months. I have listed just a few of these things for you to be diligent about these next few months.

How to Stay Healthy at Home During Summer

While some Community Quarantine requirements may still be ongoing, the risk of encountering these summer health issues is not completely gone. Here are some precautions to take to minimize this risk as much as possible: Drink more water- To aid the body in its cooling process, staying hydrated is essential. Aside from drinking more water, it is advisable to opt for drinks with electrolytes when exercising or doing strenuous activities in the heat. Eating food with high water content such as fruits and vegetables can also help with hydration. Keep food clean and healthy- Eating a well-balanced diet is important to keep the body’s immune system in peak condition. Aside from avoiding salty and processed food, ensure that wet ingredients and perishable goods are stored properly to prevent spoilage. Throw out leftovers that have been sitting in the open for more than two hours. Regular exercise is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. As much as possible, try to limit any exercise or physical activity to indoors or under adequate shade. Make sure to schedule workouts during cooler hours—either earlier in the day or towards nighttime—to avoid the worst of the summer heat. Wear light clothing - It is crucial to keep the body cool and well-ventilated to prevent heat from building up. Light-colored, loose-fitting garments help air circulate better and reflect heat rather than absorb it. Clothes made of breathable materials like cotton are preferable over synthetic fabrics, which can weigh the body down and create unnecessary warmth. Practice good hygiene- One of the best ways to manage body temperature is by taking a cold shower, especially after coming from outside. Not only is the body cooled, but the risk of possible exposure to bacteria and other contaminants is also mitigated. Meanwhile, regular and frequent hand washing and disinfection of eating and cooking utensils, including spaces, can prevent food contamination. Protect against UV rays- Ultraviolet rays of the sun can cause harmful effects on the body. Stay out of the sun as much as possible, and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30 when going out. Additionally, wear clothes to cover the skin, and consider using a light, wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses to protect the head and eyes from exposure to the sun.

Stay indoors- While going outside may seem like a good idea once the quarantine is lifted, minimizing exposure to the outdoors can make all the difference in staying safe during the dry months. Make sure to plan necessary trips during cooler hours and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun. Consider patronizing indoor-friendly alternatives to running errands outside. Stay Healthy and Beat the Heat As the old saying goes, prevention is better than cure. Knowing what risks to avoid—namely, the effects of exposure to sunlight and excessive heat—makes all the difference in planning both leisure and essential activities during the summer months. I hope you have a safe and healthy summer and that you get to enjoy a vacation with family and friends. Until we meet again, God Bless you and your family.

Summer Recipe

Corn Fritters 2 cups of corn (fresh off the cob) About ¾ cup of flour (regular) 1 tsp of baking powder 1 tsp. salt ¼ cup of sugar 3 eggs separated ½ cup of milk 1.) Separate eggs and beat the yolks until frothy and then stir in flour, baking powder, Salt and milk. Mix thoroughly and stir in corn 2.) Beat egg whites until stiff and then gently fold into corn mixture. 3.) Using about ½ cup of vegetable oil, drop by tablespoons into hot oil, turn once and then drain on paper towels. Keep warm in the oven until ready to serve. *Some people like to just put butter on them while others prefer to drizzle with maple syrup. I often make theses when I have cooked corn on the cob and have it left over, then I cut the corn off and make fritters. P.S. you can also use self- rising flour and thus you can eliminate the baking powder and salt.

USHERS AND GREETERS We are still looking for volunteers to greet and usher at all

of our services. Please contact the church office at 410-749-5562 and let us know if you can help and what

services you would be willing to help with. Thank you so much.

“FOOD SAFETY TIPS FOR A SAFE AND HEALTHY SUMMER”

Health Outreach Ministry Dr. Dot Baker

Here’s your annual food safety message about food prep, cooking, and eating.

Please COOK & EAT Safely This Summer WASH Hands, Utensils, and Food Preparation Surfaces - Food safety begins with hand-washing even in outdoor settings. Use a water jug, soap, and paper towels. Use moist disposable towelettes to clean your hands. Keep all utensils and platters clean when preparing food. See info and videos @ https://www.cdc.gov/handwashing/index.html

PREPARE Fruits and Vegetables - Rinse fresh fruits and vegetables - (including those with skins and rinds that are not eaten) under running tap water before packing them. Packaged fruits and vegetables labeled "ready-to-eat," "washed," or "triple washed" need not be washed. Rub firm-skin fruits and vegetables under running tap water or scrub with a clean vegetable brush as you rinse.

GRILL SAFELY - Marinate foods in the refrigerator, not on the counter or outdoors. If some of the marinade is to be used as a sauce on the cooked food, reserve a portion separately before adding the raw meat, poultry, or seafood. Don't reuse marinade. Don't use the “same” platter and utensils that previously held raw meat or seafood to serve cooked meats and seafood. If you partially cook food in the microwave, oven, or stove to reduce grilling time, do so immediately before the food goes on the hot grill.

When it's time to cook the food, cook it thoroughly. Use a food thermometer to be sure the food has reached an adequate internal temperature before serving. Beef, veal, and lamb steaks and roasts--145°F for medium rare, 160°F for medium, and 170°F for well done. Ground pork and ground beef--160°F. Ground poultry--165°F. Poultry breasts--170°F. Whole poultry (take measurement in the thigh)--180°F. Fin fish--145°F or until the flesh is opaque and separates easily with a fork. Shrimp, lobster, and crabs--the meat should be pearly and opaque. Clams, oysters, and mussels--until the shells are open. Grilled food can be kept hot until served by moving it to the side of the grill rack, just away from the coals where it can overcook.

SERVE Food Safely - Keep cold foods COLD and hot foods HOT. Do not use a plate that previously held raw meat, poultry, or seafood for ANYTHING else unless the plate has first been washed in hot, soapy water. Hot food should be kept hot, at or above 140 °F. Wrap well and place in an insulated container.

Foods like chicken salad and desserts in individual serving dishes can also be placed directly on ice or in a shal-low container set in a deep pan filled with ice. Drain off water as ice melts and replace ice frequently. Don't let perishable food sit out.

MAKE Ice cream - Every year homemade ice cream made with raw eggs causes several outbreaks of Salmo-nella infection. Instead of raw eggs, substitute a pasteurized egg product, egg substitute, or pasteurized shell eggs to decrease this risk. You can also use a cooked egg base or prepare it without eggs. Even when using pasteurized products, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. Department of Agriculture advise consumers to start with a cooked base for increased safety, especially if serving people at high risk. Finally, ensure that the dairy ingredients such as milk and cream in homemade ice cream are pasteurized.

TRANSPORT Food - Keep COLD food COLD. Place cold food in a cooler with ice or frozen gel packs. Cold food should be held at or below 40°F. Consider packing beverages in one cooler and perishable foods in anoth-er. Meat, poultry, and seafood may be packed while it is still frozen so that it stays colder longer. Be sure to keep raw meat, poultry, and seafood securely wrapped so their juices do not contaminate cooked foods or raw foods such as fruits and vegetables. After washing fruits and vegetables, dry them with a clean cloth towel or paper towel before packing them. Keep the cooler in your air-conditioned car, rather than in a hot trunk. Limit the times the cooler is opened. DISCARD all perishable foods if there is no ice in the cooler or if the gel packs have thawed. If you have questions, please contact the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition's (CFSAN) Outreach and Information Center at 1-888- 723-3366. Sources: CDC, Food & Drug Administration - CFSAN
