Reflections for The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity

This week we return to the liturgical season of Ordinary Time. This Sunday and next Sunday, however, are designated as solemnities, special days that call our attention to central mysteries of our faith. Today, on the first Sunday after Pentecost, we celebrate the Solemnity

of the Most Holy Trinity. This feast invites us to consider what we believe about God, who has revealed himself to us in the Trinity—one God in three persons.

The verses of today's Gospel come near the end of Jesus' long discourse at the Last Supper. In the early part of this discourse, as we saw last week on Pentecost, Jesus offers assurances to the disciples. Even though he must leave the disciples, he tells them that they will have a future because of the help he will send them in the Holy Spirit. In this section he focuses more on the shape of the future, which will include Jesus' victory over the world that they will share in. The disciples of Jesus cannot know the future. They can only know that, whatever shape the future takes, they will not have to face it alone. They have the Spirit of Truth, who will continue to provide the teaching of Jesus in the future.

Reading this passage on Trinity Sunday reinforces our understanding of the unity shared by the members of the Trinity. Although the idea of one God in three persons remains a mystery, we have the assurance that, as Jesus and the Father share all, Jesus and the Spirit share all.

VISITATION FEAST DAY CELEBRATION On Saturday, May 28 we will be celebrating the Feast of the Visitation – the feast day of our parish. We will begin our celebration with spiritual food at the 4:00 pm Mass.

Our celebration will continue in the church auditorium after Mass with a pot-luck dinner. Everyone is invited to help make this a successful event that will be a tribute to our namesake. As parishioners of our church community, we are asking you to participate in the Mass and supper, and encourage others to participate.

We are asking each family that is able, to bring a dish of food to share, a monetary donation to defray the cost of supplies, or assist with set up, serving, or clean up. To help make adequate preparations, please let us know by May 25th if you plan on attending the Visitation Feast Celebration on May 28 and what you will be bringing (entree, salad, dessert, monetary donation, assistance with the event, etc.). You can let us know how you plan to participate in any of the following ways:

• Sign-up sheets are at all doors of the church • Leave a message at 732-477-7059 ext. 216 • Send an e-mail to [email protected] • Visit our website visitationRCchurch.com

ALL ARE WELCOME TO ATTEND

IMPROVE OUR STEWARDSHIP “A steward is one to whom the owner of a household turns over responsibility for caring for the property, managing affairs, making resources yield as much as possible, and sharing the resources with others. The position involves trust and accountability.” – Stewardship: A Disciple’s Response, USCCB, 1992 The third goal of the Faith in Our Future process is to improve our stewardship of personnel, finances, facilities and other parish and diocesan resources. We have a responsibility to cultivate these resources and make them productive. We must allocate them, not according to personal preference, but so that they “yield as much as possible.” Here are a few questions to ponder: • How are we calling forth and nurturing the gifts of the people of God in service of the mission? • How are we helping people to discern their call to a vocation and respond? • Could we afford full-time, professionally-qualified staff if salaries and ministry responsibilities were shared

between parishes? • Do we keep overhead and administrative costs low in order to channel needed resources into evangelization

and ministry? • How are we prompting a sense of co-responsibility among the next generation? • Are the buildings fully utilized, efficiently operated, and well-maintained? • Are there parishes with “abundance” that can share resources to “raise the yield” elsewhere? • Are the mass schedules, facility usage, and staffing “right-sized” for the church in your area? • How would the use of resources need to change if fewer priests were available to minister among the

parishes of your cohort? • What are we doing that is failing to produce fruit?

PRESENTERS OF THE HOLY OILS

As part of our liturgy on Holy Thursday we present the oils blessed by our Bishop at the Chrism Mass to the assembly. Our parish chose the following people to represent us in the presentation of these Oils for the coming year.

Martin Rensi presented the Sacred Chrism. Martin is 16 years old and a sophomore at High School North in Toms River. He’s been an altar server at Visitation since 3rd Grade and a CCD aid since 7th Grade. He received his Confirmation at Visitation in June of 2014. Martin was chosen because he is a young man who practices his faith and is an example of our Visitation youth in action.

Carmella Barry presented the Oil of the Sick. She has been serving in Visitation for many years in a variety of ministries. She attends Daily Mass and Bible Study and has done so for almost 20 years. She is an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion who serves at Mass and also brings communion to the sick. Carmella was chosen because she truly serves God’s people. Her daughter has been ill recently and, while taking care of her, she has still continued to serve at Visitation. She is faithful, dependable, and reflects the love of God.

Mary Helik presented the Oil of the Catechumens. Mary has been a parishioner for many years and has served in Adult Faith Formation on numerous occasions. She is a faithful servant who, when called upon, gives us her best. We are so grateful for all she does for Visitation. Mary is also an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion who serves at Mass and brings communion to the sick in our parish. Mary was chosen because of her fidelity to service at Visitation and especially for her care for our RCIA Candidates.

PEW BOOK HOLDERS We have been noticing a significant increase in the use of the holders as trash receptacles. Please keep your church clean; put only missalettes in these and use the garbage can located in the foyer of the church for trash. Thank you for your cooperation.
