POSTGRADUATE AND ONE YEAR DANCE PROGRAMMES

TRINITY LABAN CONSERVATOIRE OF MUSIC & DANCE

Page 2: Trinity Laban Postgraduate and One Year Dance Programmes

What is it?This research-focused programme allows you to study dance science within a world-renowned conservatoire. It focuses on applying research to dance practice across recreational, training, and professional settings.

What is special about it?You will learn within a culture of high calibre conservatoire dancers, interacting with over 300 students committed to becoming professional dancers and choreographers. Cross-disciplinary study opportunities with students on other postgraduate programmes are also integral to the learning experience.

The programme examines the disciplines of physiology, biomechanics and psychology as applied to dance, and the intersection of these disciplines with embodied and somatic practices. It includes a core module in research methods, as well as the opportunity to apply knowledge and skills from discipline-specific modules to the observation of one dancer across time, proposing a research-informed performance enhancement strategy for that dancer. An independent research-project culminates the programme experience.

Our team is internationally known in the field and work with professional companies and organisations around the world. Trinity Laban is a founding partner of the National Institute of Dance Medicine and Science (NIDMS) and a supporter of the International Association for Dance Medicine & Science (IADMS).

Our in-house Screening Programme and departmental research projects give you a great opportunity to be involved in live data collection and gain valuable experience of working as a dance scientist while you study. Our specialist facilities include a versatile testing laboratory with dedicated support staff, a specialist dance library and 12 dance studios.

Who is it for? This programme is for anyone with prior dance experience who is interested in dance science, such as dancers, choreographers, scientists, teachers, lecturers and health practitioners.

What can I do next?Graduates often go on to become consultants for dance companies, training institutions and national dance organisations. They can become teachers and lecturers and go onto further study. Graduates use their dance science knowledge to inform their own practice as dancers, teachers, rehearsal directors or choreographers.

What do students say?“The institution has provided the opportunity to learn directly from top researchers in the field… equipment and facilities are state of the art… Studying at Trinity Laban is the best decision I’ve ever made.”Kristina Marquez, MSc student 2014/15

What do alumni say?“I met life-long mentors, colleagues, and friends and encountered incredible opportunities; above all, I was nurtured as a dance artist, researcher and academic.”Dr Shantel Ehrenberg, MSc student 2005/6, Lecturer in Dance, University of Surrey

What are my study options?1-year full time, or 2-years part time.

How much does it cost?In 2015/16 the fees are £6,600 (full time) or £3,700 (part time) for Home/EU students; £16,600 (full time) for overseas students.

What language skills do I need?IELTS at Band 7 or above, the TCL Integrated Skills in English III, or the Pearson Test of English (score of 67 or above).

What is it?The MFA Dance Science is a 2-year research-focused postgraduate programme, which broadens the possibilities within dance science research and study. The first year shares module content with students on the MSc Dance Science programme. An extended independent project forms the second year, as the defining feature of the MFA Dance Science.

What is special about it?This is the world’s first and only MFA Dance Science programme. It examines both the science and the art of dance. From both a theoretical and applied perspective, the programme engages with qualitative and quantitative modes of research and practice, integrating interdisciplinary elements of dance science such as physiology, biomechanics, psychology and embodied practices (e.g. Somatics). Scientific research methods and modes of statistical analyses are central to the taught programme in the first year.

The second year offers an opportunity for students to direct their postgraduate dance science experience through an extended enquiry. This requires both breadth and depth of critical engagement culminating in a substantial research project.

The uniqueness of the programme, being situated within a dance and music conservatoire, brings with it the opportunity to be part of the wider Trinity Laban artistic and scholarly community, along with access to specialist staff and performance and laboratory facilities.

Our team is internationally known in the field and work with professional companies and organisations around the world. Trinity Laban is a founding partner of the National Institute of Dance Medicine and Science (NIDMS) and a supporter of the International Association for Dance Medicine & Science (IADMS).

Who is it for?We welcome applications from students with prior dance experience, who are interested in investigating the science and art of dance. Applicants should be able to demonstrate their capacity to undertake independent self-directed research over an extended period of time and propose a research question that warrants the depth and breadth that an extended project time frame can afford. The choice between pursuit of an MSc or

MFA programme of study will depend upon the applicant’s prior experiences and future aspirations.

What can I do next? The programme aims to extend the range of practice, educational, research and employment possibilities available to graduates. An MFA Dance Science is likely to appeal to graduates wishing to pursue a career in higher education, especially where a terminal degree is required. As with the MSc, graduates can go on to become consultants for dance companies, training institutions and national dance organisations. Some might pursue further study at PhD level. Others will use their dance science knowledge to inform their practice as dancers, teachers, rehearsal directors or choreographers.

What do others say?“In terms of research outputs in dance science, it would be fair to say that Trinity Laban is one of the world’s leading institutions… I support Trinity Laban’s addition of offering this exceptional educational opportunity as a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree”Virginia Wilmerding PhD, MSc Dance Science External Examiner 2010 –15, CEO IAMDS

What are my study options?2 years full time.

How much does it cost?In 2015/16 the fees for MFA study are Year 1: £4,450 for Home/EU students; £11,000 for overseas students. Year 2: £3,950 for Home /EU students; £10,000 for overseas students.

What language skills do I need?IELTS at Band 7 or above, the TCL Integrated Skills in English III, or the Pearson Test of English (score of 67 or above).

What is it?The MA Choreography is a one year (full time) or two year (part time) taught programme, culminating in an independent research project.

The MFA Choreography is a two year full time programme. It shares the first year taught programme with the MA. An extended independent project forms the second year, providing time for in-depth research.

What is special about it?The MA and MFA Choreography offer a stimulating environment in which to explore and develop your choreographic practice and expertise. Whether you’re in the early stages of your career or an experienced dance artist, these programmes present opportunities to engage with contemporary ideas, concepts and propositions within the choreographic field.

The taught programme of the MA (first year of the MFA) encourages you to explore your current practice. You will encounter interdisciplinary perspectives and collaborative practices, creating work across a range of settings and media. You will be challenged to experiment, take risks and continuously create: developing your individual artistic voice.

For MA students, the year culminates in an independent project, allowing you to build on the ideas encountered in the programme and undertake self-directed research, experimentation and reflection.

The MFA Extended Project is a self-directed module during which you consolidate your independent choreographic perspectives and practice. You will create and present a substantial body of work that evidences your capacity to research and realise your ideas as a coherent choreographic project.

Who is it for?You will normally have prior choreographic experience and/or have successfully completed an undergraduate degree in a related subject. We encourage applications from:

• Professional choreographers wishing to re-invigorate, broaden or consolidate their practice

• Emerging choreographers intending to interrogate their practice and develop independent choreographic perspectives

• Recently graduated dance artists showing a commitment to develop their choreographic practice

MFA applicants should demonstrate their capacity to undertake self-directed research and propose a project that warrants the depth and breadth afforded by an extended time frame. The choice between an MA or an MFA programme of study will depend upon your prior experience and future aspirations.

What can I do next?Recent graduates have worked on and choreographed productions all over Europe, including research at KOLT, productions at FLOTA Slovenia, Pro Progressione in Europe and other companies in the UK and internationally. Alumni of the programme include: freelance performers and choreographers; founders and co-founders of independent dance projects; theatre and opera directors; assistant choreographers with major dance companies; PhD students and lecturers in colleges and universities.

What do students say?“The course has given me many different opportunities to both research my areas of choreographic interest, as well as to make work. We constantly have the chance to interrogate our practice, question our assumptions, and seek new breakthroughs… Studying at Trinity Laban has helped me examine my practice, and pushed me to explore new territories as choreographer.”Peter Gn, MA Choreography student

What are my study options? The programme can be studied as an MA or an MFA. Full time: 1 year (MA); 2 years (MFA) or part time: 2 years (available for MA only).

How much does it cost?In 2015/16 the fees are: MA: £6,600 (full time) or £3,700 (part time) for Home/ EU students; £16,600 (full time) for overseas students.MFA: Year 1: £4,450 for Home/EU students; £11,000 for overseas students. Year 2: £3,950 for Home/EU students; £10,000 for overseas students.

What language skills do I need?Minimum IELTS Band 7, TCL Integrated Skills in English III, or Pearson Test of English (minimum score of 67).

What is it?The Independent Study Programme enables you to build on your dance interests, skills and experience and open up possibilities for your personal, artistic and professional development. You create an individual programme of study by choosing components from an elective menu, enabling you to navigate a personal route of study and pursue particular areas of interest according to your individual goals.

What is special about it?The programme offers rigorous, progressive and supported study in a flexible, open format that encourages a maturity of approach and self-motivated learning. We will sit down with you at the start of your studies and plan a programme of study to suit your learning, artistic and professional development goals. The elective menu offers a range of practices and perspectives across technical, creative and performance disciplines, and different modes of learning: from taught dance classes and creative workshops to lecture-seminar based study and independent and collaborative projects.

As a student on this programme you will join a vibrant, friendly community of dancers from a great diversity of backgrounds and nationalities, work with expert tutors who will nurture and encourage your artistic development and benefit from the specialist facilities and resources of Trinity Laban’s award-winning building.

Who is it for?The programme is based on a professional development model, catering for different levels of expertise and experience and appealing to students from a wide variety of backgrounds. It provides opportunities for learners whose dance training/education has taken an unconventional route or have trained in a different style of dance or outside of formal education, to study contemporary dance practice(s) within a conservatoire environment. Equally, the programme suits students with considerable training or professional experience who wish to re-engage with supported learning or refresh, hone and broaden their knowledge and skills base.

Applicants are expected to have a level of maturity to enable them to work towards level 5/6 study (such as through experiential knowledge/professional experience/other qualifications) as well as experience in a dance/arts related area.

What can I do next?Graduates have embarked on, or re-entered professional practice in: dance performance, choreography, dance teaching and dance management. Other graduates assimilate dance knowledge into their professional careers which can include a whole range of body based pursuits such as physical therapy, somatic practices, physical theatre, performance art, drama and non-dance disciplines.

For some, the programme can provide an opportunity to discover an area of specialism that they wish to pursue through further study, and graduates of the programme have progressed on to undergraduate and postgraduate degrees across a range of dance-related disciplines.

What do alumni say?“Studying at Trinity Laban allowed me to find my voice as an artist. The nurturing environment and the supportive faculty and colleagues allowed me to take risks with my practice and explore areas I hadn’t touched before and I still regularly work with contacts I made on my courses.”Mari Frogner, ISP student 2010/11, Founder of Nutshell Dance Company

What are my study options?1-year full time, or 2-years part time (UK/EU students only).

How much does it cost?In 2015/16 the fees are £12,700 (full time) or £7,150 (part time).

What is it?The MA Creative Practice is a one year (full time) or two year (part time) taught programme, culminating in an independent research project.

The MFA Creative Practice is a two year full time programme. It shares the first year taught programme with the MA. An extended independent project forms the second year, providing time for in-depth research and realisation of a substantial body of work.

We offer two routes of study through the MA and MFA:• Transdisciplinary • Dance Professional Practice

What is special about it?Delivered in conjunction with our partner organisations: Siobhan Davies Dance and Independent Dance, the Dance Professional Practice focus enables experienced practitioners to develop their artistic practice in a stimulating environment of intellectual and creative inquiry. We support mid-career artists to: reflect on their body of professional experience and its role in their ongoing learning; engage in intensive studio-based experiences with significant artists and a skilled peer group; deepen their own practice as performers/makers; develop their understanding of a range of research methodologies within the arts; and pursue their own area of artistic interest.

For MA students, the year culminates in an independent research project, allowing you to reflect on dance practice in its many forms, and the social, cultural, aesthetic and political contexts in which performance practice is located.

The MFA Extended Project is an extensive, self-directed module during which you consolidate your independent creative practice. You will create and present a substantial body of work that evidences your capacity to research, develop, realise and identify appropriate modes of presentation for your ideas.

Who is it for?Dance Professional Practice is for experienced professionals in the fields of dance, performing arts or humanities, such as dancers, choreographers, academics, teachers and somatic practitioners.

MFA applicants should demonstrate their capacity to undertake self-directed research and propose a project that warrants the

depth and breadth afforded by an extended time frame. The choice between an MA or an MFA programme of study will depend upon prior experience and future aspirations.

What can I do next? All graduates use their creative research findings to inform their practice in whichever professional setting they enter. Some graduates go on to work freelance, creating and performing their own work. Some graduates go on to become dance industry professionals, taking roles within arts management, and others go onto further study.

What do students say?“The MA Creative Practice, jointly organised with Independent Dance, is such a special course in what it offers the students. It is a wonderful container to interrogate and develop your practice. The care brought to people’s needs, wherever they are in their path, is very precious and rare. I find it wonderful to be given the opportunity to explore what really interests me, in whatever shape and form, and to be supported on the journey. The two locations are brilliant places to work, each of them providing different environments to be in.”

Camille Desmarest, MA Creative Practice student 2014/15

How much does it cost?In 2015/16 the fees are: MA: £6,600 (full time) or £3,700 (part time) for Home/ EU students; £16,600 (full time) for overseas students.MFA: Year 1: £4,450 for Home/EU students; £11,000 for overseas students. Year 2: £3,950 for Home/EU students; £10,000 for overseas students.

We offer two routes of study through the MA and MFA:• Transdisciplinary • Dance Professional Practice

What is special about it?The Transdisciplinary focus offers the opportunity to build your own dance Masters programme. With its open format and broad range of modules, you can specialise in areas of interest, develop your skills, and experience new insights through engagement in practice based research, including collaborative projects. Areas of study incorporate a diverse range of perspectives, including theoretical and philosophical underpinning of arts practice, visual and body-based art, film making, writing, and somatic practice. Modules are designed to be conversant with one another, supporting an interdisciplinary approach to the development and articulation of your individual practice through studio exploration supported by reflective and theoretical study.

For MA students, the year culminates in an independent project, allowing you build on the ideas encountered in the taught programme and undertake self-directed research, experimentation and reflection.

The MFA Extended Project is an extensive, self-directed module during which you consolidate your independent creative practice. You will create and present a substantial body of work that evidences your capacity to research, develop, realise and identify appropriate modes of presentation for your ideas.

Who is it for?The Transdisciplinary focus is ideal for recent graduates of dance, performing arts or humanities, and dance professionals who want to develop and promote their creative ‘voice’ within a safe and supportive environment.

MFA applicants should be able to demonstrate their capacity to undertake self-directed research and propose a project that warrants the depth and breadth that an extended time frame can afford. The choice between engaging in an MA or MFA programme of study will depend upon your prior experience and future aspirations.

What can I do next?Graduates use their creative research to inform their practice in whichever professional setting they enter. Students have gone on to work as dance artists, performers, choreographers, visual/film artists, writers, and to teach in schools, colleges and universities. Alumni have had their work programmed in international festivals and performance platforms, and published research in peer-reviewed journals.

What do alumni say?“My MA allowed me to deepen my choreographic practice and provided me the tools needed in order to work as a professional in the arts. With the guidance of great tutors, Trinity Laban allowed me to build relationships with a great artistic community inside and outside the UK.”Maria Sideri, MA Creative Practice student 2012

What is it?This unique vocational programme is for anyone wanting to work as a dance practitioner in community settings. It supports your development as a dance artist with practical knowledge and skills, and an understanding of dance as a socially-relevant, inclusive practice.

What is special about it?

Trinity Laban is the only institution where intensive, conservatoire-level art form training sits alongside applied study in community dance. The programme has four key strands:

• Artistic development. Progress your dance skills and artistic practice in a world-class conservatoire with first-class teachers and facilities

• Dance leadership and teaching. Develop knowledge and skills for working with different kinds of groups. Learn from some of the UK’s leading community dance practitioners and work with Trinity Laban’s renowned Learning and Participation programme.

• Understanding community dance. Context-specific study explores the values and principles of community dance, how it happens, and its impact on individuals and communities. Learn about planning and delivering projects, and the networks and agencies that support community dance provision.

• Professional practice. Encounters with practising artists and their work - supported by our partnerships with some of the UK’s leading professional organisations - facilitates your understanding of how the profession operates, as well as providing valuable contacts and work experience.

Who is it for?The Postgraduate Diploma Community Dance attracts people from a diversity of backgrounds who have a common interest in dance as a creative, participatory artform and a desire to work beyond the traditional contexts of dance making and performance. We encourage applications from:

• Dance/performing arts graduates who have pursued teaching/education/community as a strand of study and want to continue this as a specialism at postgraduate level

• Graduates of non-arts subjects who have a dance background and interest/experience in participatory arts/teaching/community work

• Individuals with traditional dance training wanting to extend their practice beyond performance and creation towards teaching and participatory practice

• Experienced professionals from dance/other sectors looking to broaden their skills and knowledge and enter new areas of professional practice

What can I do next? The Programme prepares students for a breadth of possibilities and our graduates work in a variety of settings as dance artists, facilitators, teachers and artistic leaders, or go on to further study in related disciplines. The vocational focus of the Programme ensures that it continues to support graduate practitioners into the profession on an employed or independent basis.

What do students say?“The course is brilliantly designed to cover all bases and each individual’s interests… There are so many opportunities to volunteer and work out in the community; this ensures that you will leave the course with the real-life experiences that are vital to starting a career… I feel proud and privileged to be a part of this exciting place.”Corinne Meredith, PGDip student 2013 –15

What do alumni say?“Trinity Laban offered me the most spectacular of opportunities which have continued to support artistic and academic movement enquiry. The structure of all programmes enables the individual to be challenged, motivated, nurtured and guided; providing solid grounding from transition of student to professional.”Lucy Blazheva, PGDip student 2009 /10, www.lucyblazhevadance.com

What are my study options?1-year full time, or 2-years part time.

How much does it cost?In 2015/16 the fees are £8,250 (full time) or £4,650 (part time) for Home/EU students; £16,600 (full time) for overseas students.

What language skills do I need?Minimum IELTS Band 7, TCL Integrated Skills in English III, or Pearson Test of English (minimum score of 67).
