On Monday, 15th August, we welcomed back our Year 12 students from their Trial HSC exams and these students joined in with the remainder of the College to celebrate Foundation Day. There were two functions on this day. The first was our Foundation Day Mass, presided over by Bishop Jarrett. As this day was also the feast of the Assumption the readings of the day were all linked to Our Lady. In his homily the Bishop drew inspiration from the words of Pope Francis who challenged Catholic youth and young people to be ‘messy’ and to be active agents in confronting social injustices as they continue their faith development. At the end of the Mass the Bishop presented relevant staff with ‘Years of Service ‘ badges to recognise contribution made by these people to the Trinity community. The second function for this day was a House BBQ and Foundation Day birthday cake for all to enjoy. At the conclusion the students in Years 7 -11 attended a Motivational Media presentation in which a series of inspiring life stories were presented. the Lantern No. 13 Week Six Term ThreeTuesday, 23rd August, 2016

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Now that we are moving into the second half of the Term we can look back with satisfaction on a very busy passage of events.

STUDENT LEADERS- 2016/2017The Foundation Day Mass also presented the ideal gathering to introduce our student leaders for the next twelve months and I am pleased to announce the following:

College Captains: Amete Baume and Billy Bird

Ministry Captains: Elise Pereira and Gabe Douglas

These students along with soon to be elected groups of SRC members and House Captains will be formally inducted into their roles early next term.

STUDENT ART EXHIBITIONHopefully many of you were able to find time to view the HSC artworks created by our Year 12 students. Fourteen very inspirational works were on display and were a credit to the students and their teachers Ms Cook and Mrs Anlezark.

CAMBODIAN IMMERSION DINNEROn Wednesday night I attended the decommissioning dinner for those students and staff who recently completed an immersion experience in Cambodia. These boys spent the majority of their time building houses for the poor and reports from the teachers involved indicate they did a fantastic job and were a great group of young people to be with. As I was listening to each of the students presenting their

own account of their experiences I became conscious that I was listening to what seemed to be young men. Immersion experiences can be very transformative! Special thanks to Mr Davies, Mr Mayes and Mr Mulroy.

TOURNAMENT OF THE MINDSAlso on Wednesday night was a gathering of students interested in the Tournament of the Minds competition. Thanks to Mrs Parker and Miss Leeson for co-ordinating this activity.

COLLEGE COUNCIL MEETINGOn Thursday evening I attended a College Council meeting. It was preceded by sub-committee meetings with a Finance committee meeting the week earlier and Employment Relations and Administrative committee meetings earlier on Thursday. The Council’s role is about governance and does not involve itself in the management of the College. It is composed of current and past parents of Trinity students, representatives of the Parish, the Presentation sisters, and the Marist Brothers. I am very impressed with the commitment that the Council members give to the College and I thank them for taking on this important and necessary work. Positions on this Council do become vacant through end of tenure or sometimes through resignation and I issue an invitation to those of you who have the necessary skills and desire to be part of future Councils to contact one of the current Directors expressing your interest. Any expression of interest received will be discussed and it is the Members of the Company who are responsible for appointing Directors.

Current Council Directors’ names are printed in your daughter/son’s Planner, or available on our website, or contact can be made with the Council secretary, Mrs Carmel Warnock at the College.

YEAR 12 PERFORMAThe week was capped off by our Year 12 Music students presenting their work in a show we call Performa. After what seemed a long week, attending this show was a very pleasant way to complete it. Lots of fine singing, drumming, piano and saxaphone were enjoyed. While the performances were great I think I received more pleasure

in watching the students support each other in their pieces with backing music and vocals. A big thank you to the Music teachers, Mr Marlin, Mrs Magee and Mr Archer.

A DISTURBING ISSUEA recent revelation in Queensland related to pornography rings infiltrating High Schools in that state. Essentially it involves putting ‘orders in’ for compromising images of females. These images are then circulated between the ring participants and the cycle continues. Trinity cannot assume to be immune to this type of activity and while we would hope that individuals do not get caught up in the ring, it is a possibility. Later this week we plan to address this issue with our students but there also needs to be some work done at home. If you have a daughter please speak with her about the dangers of placing compromising images, including any images involving nudity or suggestive images, of herself on any social mediums. What might seem to be a ‘fun’ thing to do at the time can possibly lead to severe embarrassment in the future or even expose her to predatory pornography rings like that mentioned above. While it is normal to assume that your daughter is not involved in such activity, I know of a number of past instances involving our girls and inappropriate images being circulated. Put simply, posting such images is a NO NO. If you have a son, you too need to have a discussion. The ease of access to pornography by boys using the internet and social media is creating very unhealthy perceptions of masculinity and femininity. The more they see the inappropriate acts, the more confused they become about what is involved in a respectful relationship. Similar to the example above with the girls, I have had experience with some of our boys demanding/asking girls to send them photos of various parts of their bodies. Such exchange of images is often two way. Please make time for the conversation with your child and it would be best if both parents were present when it is held.

YEAR 10 INTO 11Parents of Year 10 students intending to return to Trinity next year are reminded that the $300 deposit (which contributes to your 2017 School fees) is overdue. It would be appreciated if this can be attended to. If there are extenuating circumstances present that make this payment difficult, you are asked to contact the College Business Manager, Mr Andrew Callaghan.

TRINITY PARENT ASSEMBLYMost Catholic schools aligned with the Diocese have a Parent Assembly group and we too have our own group. This group seeks to support parents through faith enrichment, networking, parenting education and advocacy. Their next education initiative is planned for Wednesday, 14th September, 6pm in the Champagnat Theatre with the topic being on ‘Raising Resilient Teenagers’. The guest speaker is Mr Chris Hudson. Please try to come along to both support the efforts of our Parent assembly and more importantly, learn a little more about raising teenagers.

Take care and God bless,

Mr John LoadsmanActing Principal

COLLEGE PHOTOSAs you would be aware College photos will be taking place on Tuesday, 30th August and Wednesday, 31st August, after being postponed from last term. Please note that students have been reissued with new photo envelopes earlier this term, hence, to avoid any confusion on the day, it is requested that students dispose of the previously issued envelopes and utilise the one issued most recently. These envelopes should be returned to the photographers on photo day, whether you are purchasing photos or not. It is expected that all students will be wearing full College Winter uniform for their photographs. The vast majority of the student body will be photographed on Tuesday, including Family photos, with Year 12 group and individual photos being conducted first thing Wednesday morning. Timetables for the photographs will be displayed on College noticeboards from Monday morning.

SUMMER UNIFORMAs winter concludes (although it would appear that it may have finished early given some of our recent weather) students will be required to wear Summer uniform as of Monday, 5th September.

Sport News

ROWING Andrea Brushett from Year 10 Champagnat, has continued to travel to seek out competition in her chosen sport of rowing. Last weekend Andrea travelled to Beaudesert in South East Queensland to compete at the Gold Coast Regional All Schools Open regatta. Open regattas are held over two days with heats, semi-finals and finals and are important for rowers to attend if they are contemplating the step up to rowing in State Championships. These Open regattas can be extremely taxing on the rowing athlete who now has to race over 2000 metres three times in order to make it to the final of the one event.

Andrea has been training very hard both on and off the water for many weeks now looking to be competitive at the Queensland State Rowing titles to be held in Bundaberg in September.

This training was rewarded on the weekend with a third place in the final of the Under 17 years Single Scull and then a First Place medal in the Under 16 Single Scull! This is a great achievement for Andrea as she has only been rowing competitively for 18 months. Thank you to Peter Wallace, Lismore Rowing Club coach, who has been overseeing Andrea’s preparation for the upcoming Queensland titles.

PDHPE News

FITNESS OPTIONS EXCURSION

On 8th and 9th August the Year 11 PDHPE students were involved in a fitness camp at the CYC, Burleigh Heads.

The camp challenged us to use the appropriate skills needed in regard to communication, teamwork, participation and peer support whilst demonstrating physical fitness.

The activities included canoeing, dragon boating, tubing, walking/hiking and team building through the creation of a catapult.

Kaleb Auld - Year 11

Thanks to Ms Ellis, Mrs Yopp and Mr Lyon for giving up their time to take our students away. The group participated with enthusiasm and enjoyed the experience.

Mr Michael DaviesHead of PDHPE

The Write a Book in a Day competition involves students teaming up to write, illustrate, print and bind a book over the course of one 12-hour period. The Kid’s Cancer Project organises this competition so the entry fees (as well as any extra fundraising money the students collect) go towards funding childhood cancer research. The finished books are also donated to libraries in Children’s Hospitals around Australia.

This year Trinity will offer several teams the opportunity to participate in this competition. The teams will be writing their books on Wednesday, 24th August, from 8am to 8pm. We will be putting copies of the finished books on display in the College libraries.

This is an incredibly worthwhile cause and donations are very much appreciated. If you would like to donate, please go to www.writeabookinaday.com and click on the “Sponsor a Team” link. You will then need to select NSW and find Trinity Catholic College in the list.

Indigenous Australian Engineering Summer School 8-14 January 2017

The Indigenous Australian Engineering Summer School (IAESS), now in its 20th year, is an annual event established by Engineering Aid Australia. It provides Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from around Australia with the opportunity to experience engineering studies and careers. In January 2017, the University of Sydney will host the IAESS. Open to 20 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students entering Years 10, 11 and 12, the six-day live-in summer school gives these students a taste of engineering as a university course and career. It involves hands-on and challenging activities within the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technologies as well as site visits to engineering companies. Studying engineering helps you develop excellent problem-solving, design and research skills that will allow you to drive and lead innovation that will help shape our future. If you are good at maths and science, like working with machinery or practical tools and enjoy tackling challenging problems, then engineering may be just what you’re looking for.
