Pastor Pipho’s Perspective & Congregational Council Update

As Pastor and Council President we are writing a shared article to offer our perspective on

the Special Congregational Meeting scheduled for Sunday, October 14 at 11:15 a.m. in

Jeppson Hall. The meeting’s two agenda items: [1] a second required vote on

Constitutional changes approved at the January 2018 Annual Congregational Meeting and

[2] the Council’s recommendation to the Congregation of adding a full-time lay minister of

youth, families, and outreach to the ministry staff that includes Pastor Nathan Pipho and

    Cantor Mark Mummert.

For more information about the ministry staffing proposal, we invite you to attend Info

Sessions scheduled for Sundays, September 30 and October 7 at both 9 a.m. (in the Chapel)

and 11:15 a.m. (in the Nave). These sessions will be led by members of the Council and

Transition Team and are opportunities for reflection, discussion, and Q & A. We hope you

will take advantage of one or more of these sessions prior to the Special Meeting.

We know that for some a ministry staffing proposal that does not include calling a second

(either full-time or part-time) pastor may come as a surprise. For some it may be

disheartening and/or disappointing. These views were voiced among the Council as we

considered this proposal during our July, August, and September meetings. For the reasons

stated below, however, we are excited about the proposal for ministry staffing and would

like to share the reasons for our excitement.

    The proposal…

    1. maintains high quality Sunday morning worship and preaching that are hallmarks of

Trinity’s ministry. Pastor Nathan will continue as the preaching voice on Sunday

mornings and Cantor Mark will continue to lead congregational song and the Trinity

Choir. In Pastor Nathan’s absence, supply pastors from the New England Synod pulpit

supply list, including Pastor Cliff Gerber, will be contracted to preach God’s Word and

preside at the sacraments. This ministry staffing model faithfully maintains inspiring

worship that proclaims God’s Word through word, sacraments, and song.

    2. maintains responsive pastoral care for all members and is committed to caring for

Trinity’s homebound and shut-in members. Pastor Nathan will continue to respond to

requests for pastoral care and will continue working with the TLC Care Team and

Eucharistic Ministers to make sure all members are receiving the sacrament, are held in

prayer, and remain connected to the ministry of the congregation. If you would like a

visit from Pastor Nathan, and/or a visit from a Eucharistic Minister, please contact Pastor

Nathan and/or Merrie Gerber, Chair of the TLC Care Team. Pastoral Care remains a

priority and this plan is committed to proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ to all

members in times of personal crisis, sickness, tragedy, and death.

    3. is a product of Transition Team conversations held this spring that engaged nearly 100

members of Trinity in 13 focus groups. Among those who participated in these focus

groups, the most commonly shared hopes are that Trinity will strengthen the

relationships with our youth and younger families and will also engage in outreach to

connect to the Worcester community in new ways. The most commonly expressed fear

is that Trinity will decline in numbers, financial resources, and relevance. Summaries of

each of the 13 focus groups and the Transition Team’s report to the Council are available

    upon request.

We believe that a full-time minister of youth, families, and outreach is our best path going

forward to build on these hopes and address these fears, allowing Trinity to faithfully

connect with its neighbors, establish new relationships with its diverse neighborhood,

and commit to witnessing to the gospel in timely and relevant ways. In addition to

community outreach, this full-time position should also encourage more opportunities

for educational social programs for our youth and younger families. We believe this is

the way the Holy Spirit is calling us to grow the ministry of Trinity Church and expand

the number of people experiencing the Good News of God’s love in Christ. We believe

this plan best serves the hopes of members that Trinity be a place growing in faith, love,

    hope, size, and outreach.

    4. offers the possibility of expanding on a ministry staff that Pastor Eric VanLeeuween

once called “an embarrassment of riches.” We are excited to consider the possibility of

Jena Hardy as a candidate for this full time position. In addition to effectiveness in her

current ministry with the Congregation as Director of Youth & Family Ministry (a half-

time position) and Director of Elm Park Ministries Urban Day Camp, Jena has served

Synod congregations as a Congregational Coach and leader in the “Doing What Matters

Program.” Additionally, Jena participated in the ELCA “Young Adults in Global

Mission” program where she served for a year as an outreach minister for ten Methodist

  • 3

congregations in Manchester, England. We believe a full time ministry staff of Pastor

Nathan, Cantor Mark, and Jena Hardy is a ministry staff rich in unique experience, skills,

and passions and is one that will serve Trinity well in a variety of ways.

    5. is supported by the Office of the Bishop. In responding to the ministry staffing proposal,

Pastor Sara Anderson, Associate to Bishop James Hazelwood of the New England Synod,

wrote to the Trinity Executive Committee saying “a note of encouragement and enthusiasm

for your willingness to experiment with new options and staffing structures. It is increasingly

both a necessary AND (emphasis original) transformative option for congregations … You have

my encouragement and a blessing for your ministry.”

Additionally, Pastor Anderson said this about Jena Hardy: “She’s a strong, gifted, and

capable leader and a blessing to the church at large. It sounds like you anticipate honoring and

utilizing those gifts for the good of your community. I believe Jena will serve you well.”

Pastor Anderson also noted that the New England Synod, like the ELCA, is experiencing

greater demand for pastors than supply. In the past year, the Synod requested eight first-

call pastors but only received two. The pool of pastoral candidates with the specific gifts,

passions, and call for ministry with youth, families, and outreach is even smaller.

    6. is both a responsible and strategic use of Trinity financial resources. Due to the good

work of the Finance Committee and Treasurer, Scott Baeder, we have an up-to-date and

accurate picture of our financial situation. The truth is that a ministry staff that includes

three full time positions (whether it be the proposed scenario or an alternative scenario

of two pastors + cantor) is becoming a financial stretch for this congregation. The Good

News, however, is that Trinity has financial resources. With strategic stewardship of our

resources, a strong financial pledge campaign this fall, and in thoughtful budgeting for

this year and beyond, we can fund this staffing scenario in a way that is responsible and

faithful to our call as disciples. We look forward to presenting a 2019 Operating Budget

to the Congregation at our January 2019 Annual Congregational Meeting reflecting these

    goals.

Those are just a few of the reasons we are excited about this plan. We believe it is an exciting

proposal that helps us “To Welcome, Proclaim, and Serve in Christ’s Name” in new and exciting

ways. We believe it honors what we know all members want for this congregation: that

Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church remain a strong community of disciples growing in

faith in Jesus Christ and proclaiming the Gospel to this generation and generations to come.

We thank you for your prayerful and thoughtful consideration, and we look forward to

responding to any and all questions/concerns you might have about this proposal. Please

feel free to reach out to us personally, and/or attend the info sessions on September 30 and

    October 7.

    Faithfully yours in Christ,

The Rev. Nathan D. Pipho Thom Tarquinio

    Pastor Council President

Preparing for All Saints Sunday: This month we prepare to remember those in our parish

and in our lives who have died in faith and now rest in the Lord. Votive candles and a Book

of Life are placed in the Nave. You may wish to light a candle in celebration of new life for

those whom you have loved. In addition, you may also wish to write the name(s) of those

whom you are remembering in the Book of Life. On November 4, All Saints Sunday, our

prayers include those in our parish community who have died during this past year, along

with the whole communion of saints in heaven and on earth.

    September 7, 2018

Dear members and friends of Trinity,

I pray that these near autumn days find you enjoying the many blessings of this life. Jim and I are

well, and continue to marvel at the croplands and big sky that is so characteristic of the plains.

I am writing to share with you the news that my mother, Shirley Ann Wiese, died on Thursday,

September 6, 2018. She was so beautifully cared for at The Neighborhoods, a nursing home here in

Brookings, South Dakota. She was able, with the aid of her walker, to navigate her daily life and was

blessedly lucid until just days ago. (She whupped us at crossword puzzles!)

In the days surrounding her 90th birthday on August 14th, my mother was feted with four different

parties: one with her sisters in Iowa, one with the residents of The Neighborhoods, one with her

lifelong church friends and one with family members in the area. Needless to say, she was overjoyed

and grateful to be surrounded by such love and appreciation.

Jim and I thank you for your faithful prayers and concern offered over these past months. In Christ’s

church we never journey alone and we are so grateful that our journey has been with you. God bless

you and keep you always and give you great joy and strength as you continue to welcome, serve and

proclaim new life in Christ from the corner of Salisbury and Lancaster.

    In God’s peace,

    Susan and Jim Nachtigal

“When we were baptized in Christ Jesus, we were baptized into to his death. We were buried therefore with him by

baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live a new life.

For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like

    his.” (ELW Funeral Liturgy)

Message from Bishop Hazelwood on September 18, 2018-

Urgent need for U.S. to resume financial support to Augusta Victoria Hospital

In recent days, I have read of the news that impacts our companion church of the Evangelical Lutheran

Church in Jordan and the Holy Land. Our brothers and sisters in the Lutheran congregations of Palestine

are in danger of losing medical treatment through the East Bank Hospital System in Jerusalem.

The White House has made the decision to withhold $25 million from the network that includes the

Augusta Victoria Hospital. These are funds that have already received congressional approval.

Regardless of one’s political affiliation, I believe that as people of faith we must put the welfare of people,

especially the most vulnerable, above politics. Therefore, I am asking you to join with me, Presiding Bishop

Elizabeth Eaton, and Lutherans all across this church to write to the White House and your congressional

leaders. Ask them to reinstate the funding for East Jerusalem hospitals.

What should I write? As a person of faith who is concerned with the welfare of all people, I urge you to

call for full restoration of humanitarian assistance to Palestinians, including the release of funds designated

    for the East Jerusalem hospitals.

Where to send it? https://www.whitehouse.gov/contact/ or https://www.senate.gov/senators/states.htm

For whom shall I pray? Pray for the patients, nurses, doctors, orderlies, custodians of the Augusta Victoria

Hospital in East Jerusalem, as well as the work of the Lutheran World Federation.

Where can I learn more? https://jerusalem.lutheranworld.org/updates

Thank you for your urgent attention to this humanitarian crisis, which can be averted.

    Briefly Noted

Remember, First Sunday Is Food Sunday! Please bring your non-perishable food items to

Trinity on October 7 and November 4. On these Sundays, the items you bring may be put

in the grocery cart located in the hallway outside of Jeppson Hall. Your food donations go

to Carty Cupboard. The items they are looking for include spaghetti and sauce, ready-to-

eat soups, tuna fish, peanut butter and jelly, cereal, rice, canned vegetables and canned fruit.

Thank you for helping those in need!

Farmers Market Farmstand continues! The Farmer’s Market Farmstand is still at the far

end of Trinity’s Parking lot near the Institute Road entrance every Saturday from 10 a.m. to

2:30 p.m. with the final day for sales on October 13. This farmstand is sponsored by Dick’s

Market Gardens in Lunenberg. There will be plants, fruits and vegetables as they become

available during the season. New items become available every weekend so come again

    and again!

Trinity Travelers Has Openings for Tuesday, December 11 to Aqua Turf, CT for Holiday

Winter Wishes and luncheon. Departure is at 9 a.m. and returning at 5 p.m. Contact Judy

Rogers at (508) 304-8008 or Beth Axelson.

Prayer Chain: We currently have a group of members in a prayer chain which means that

they are praying daily for those on our prayer list as well as for any urgent prayers that may

be needed for those in a crisis situation. If you have an urgent need for prayer, please

contact Peggy Moskowitz at (508) 892-9640 or at [email protected]. Peggy will then

alert the group to add the name to their daily prayers. If you would like to add a name to

the prayer list but it is not a crisis situation, please contact Karen Allen in the office at (508)

    753-2989 or at [email protected].

Property Committee Next Project: Thanks to private donations, Trinity has been able to

replace the windows in Jeppson Hall and replace the carpeting in the chapel. Now the next

project will be to replace the carpeting in the library. The cost is $4,000. Currently this

carpeting has been overstretched and is rippling in spots that may cause some to fall. If you

wish to donate toward this project, please be sure to note in the memo line, “For Library

Carpeting” so the total collected may be tracked. These donations may be placed in the

collection plate or mailed to the parish office. If you have any questions about this, please

talk with Ed Menard, chair of the Property Committee or email him at [email protected].

Your help in accomplishing this is greatly appreciated.

2018 Women's Weekend at Calumet: This year’s theme is “Water of Life.” There are three

weekends: November 2-4 with Rev. Susan Nachtigal, formerly of Trinity Lutheran, Worcester

November 9-11 with Rev. Kirsten Nelson Roenfeldt of Bethlehem Lutheran,

    Sturbridge, MA

November 16-18 with Rev. Maria Hammons of Emanuel Lutheran, Manchester, NH

More details will be coming about which weekend members of Trinity will be attending. Please

contact Lisa Stone at (774) 303-3517 or email [email protected] with any questions. There

are flyers available on the table in the hallway outside of Jeppson Hall. Hope you can join us!

Cathedral In the Night (CITN) -- Sunday, October 21: The youth from LIPY are going to CITN in

Northampton, MA to worship and participate in their ministry. Stay after church to help make the

meal that we're bringing to CITN. We'll return to the church at around 8:30 p.m. We're collecting

blankets and sleeping bags to take with us. Let Jena know if you want to go so we can make sure

    we have enough transportation.

Halloween Fun: On Friday, October 26, wear your "church-appropriate" costume to Trinity.

6 p.m. -- Anyone of any age is welcome to watch "The Nightmare Before Christmas" (rated PG)

on the big screen in Jeppson Hall. Popcorn will be provided!

    7:30 p.m. -- 9 p.m. Music & games for middle & high school youth

Dear Members of Trinity Lutheran Church, Thank you so much for the lovely quilt that was

delivered to me at Knollwood Nursing Center at Briarwood. The bright colors and beautiful design

are noticed by everyone who comes into my room. I was very touched by your gift, and appreciate

your kindness and thoughtfulness. Sincerely, Edna Hill. (Note: Edna died on Sunday, September

9 with her funeral on September 15.)

Warm blankets and sleeping bags needed: Do you have any gently used warm blankets or extra

sleeping bags at home? Between now and October 21, the youth will be collecting them so that

they can be distributed at Cathedral In The Night (CITN). CITN is a church that meets out on the

streets in Northampton, MA. Many of its members are experiencing homelessness. With winter

right around the corner, they need as many layers as possible to keep from freezing. Thanks in

advance for your clean blankets and sleeping bags. You may make a monetary donation to go

toward this ministry by writing the check to Trinity Lutheran Church with “CITN” in the memo

line. This will be appreciated, too! Please see Jena for more information.

Save the Date: Trinity Meal Packing Saturday, November

    3 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. Building on the success of 50

volunteers coming together in November of last year to

pack 20,000 meals for local Worcester residents, we have

decided to have another event in November with the goal

of one event annually in the fall. Please save the date and

speak with Thom Tarquinio for more details

Sharing Hope Sponsored by Miles Funeral Home: On Saturday, October 13 at 1 p.m.,

there will be a seminar on “Healing a Spouses’ Grieving Heart and Finding Your Way” to be

held at the Holden Senior Center, 1130 Main Street in Holden. People who lose a spouse or

partner is a profound loss and this seminar gives ideas grieving spouses may use in coping,

caring for themselves and finding support as they move towards healing in their personal

grief experience. One must pre-register for this event by calling Miles Funeral Home at (508) 829-4434.

Jewish Healthcare Center (JHC) Needs Volunteers:

JHC Hospice is seeking applicants for our October 2018

volunteer training program. Graduates of this 16-hour training

program provide caring and compassionate support to

terminally ill patients of all faiths. Volunteers are valued

members of the hospice support team who offer companionship and a caring presence

through readings, prayer, music, meaningful photos, talents or sharing of life reviews. Once

trained, the commitment can be as little as one hour a week of your presence, with flexibility

in visiting times and ongoing support with continuing education and opportunities for

    growth.

To learn more about this meaningful volunteer opportunity, contact Harriett Katz, JHC

Hospice Volunteer Program Supervisor, or Susan Mack, her assistant, by calling (508) 713-

0564 or email: [email protected] and check the JHC website at www.jhchospice.com

Change in Holden TV Broadcast Time for Trinity Liturgies: The 10 a.m. liturgy will be

shown only once at 8 a.m. on Sundays with a one week delay.

Calling for All Addresses, Telephone and Email Changes: Please

be sure to keep the parish office updated with your most current

street address and phone numbers. If you have a new email

address, you may go the the website at trinityworc.org and sign up

for the newsletter and the weekly Trinity E-News distribution. Your

old email will eventually “fall off” of our mailing list. If you have any questions, contact

Karen Allen at [email protected] or call (508) 753-2989 x11.

Do You Need a Copy of the Word in Season Booklet? This is a great tool for everyone to

use as they study the Bible. The book can be mailed to you or picked up quarterly. Each

day of the quarter has its own page listing several readings from the Bible as well as a

commentary about something in the reading. It takes only a few minutes each day and it

gives an inspiring message. Please call the parish office at (508) 753-2989 and request your

copy and that your name be added to our regular mailing list.

Is Someone in the Hospital? If you know that a parishioner is in the hospital, please call

the parish office at (508) 753-2989 to let us know. Also, please be sure to have your loved

one's Trinity membership included in their hospital profile. Calls are made daily to the area

hospitals, and names of Trinity members who are in the hospital are provided to us for

    updating in the Parish Notes.

Hope for Housing Gift Cards: On the first Sunday of each month, Katherine Duffy will be

selling the gift cards in the hall outside of Jeppson. Hope for Housing is a non-profit

program developed by the Interfaith Coalition to Prevent Family Homelessness with

assistance from the Central Massachusetts Housing Alliance. The cards are from Big Y,

Hannaford, Shaw’s, Stop & Shop, Dunkin’ Donuts, Panera and CVS in various

denominations. If you miss Katherine on Sunday, call the office at (508) 753-2989 to place

an order for any of these cards. Just remember that you are helping people in Worcester

County to stay in their homes. One gets the full value of the card purchased and in turn,

the vendor donates 5% to help alleviate homelessness. And this is a great gift for students

in college so they may get some snacks or a meal or for that special someone who helps you

with a ride or runs your errands.

As we finish the month of September, we look forward to the cool, crisp mornings that await

us. The weather is not the only thing that is changing; children are growing and growing

fast. At TLC Christian Preschool, we recognize this and plan our annual clothing exchange

during the weeks of October 15 through 26. It is a great time for parents to clean out the

closets and donate items that your children have outgrown. We are accepting gently used

and laundered children’s clothing for this outreach. All clothing can be left outside the

Director office on the main floor. Once we have items available, you and the parents of the

preschool can browse through the clothing and pick what you need in the sizing that is just

right for your child. All leftover clothing will be donated to Concordia.
