Great Lakes Study Model Trimmer Jighelps the technician:
Trim study models more efficientlyMaintain the bite relationshipAchieve flawless, symmetrical modelsideal for case presentation
17) Trimmed Heels Hold Bite Position
Check heels of upper and lowermodel bases.Heels should maintain biteposition.
18) Parallel Lower to Upper BasePlace trimmed upper and lowermodel heels on trimmer table inproper bite position.Reference upper model baseagainst push-plate of trimmertable.Stabilize both models against the push-plate, with teeth inproper bite position, and trim lower base parallel to the upper.
19) Check Parallel Height of ModelsPlace models in occlusion onaligning jig.ABO base heights should be noless than 13mm at lowest carvedarea (see step 8).Total height of both upper andlower models articulated isapproximately 70mm.
Note: Final base height is often accomplished after carving of sulcus areas is completed.

Once the model is poured, follow the instructionsprovided to use the Great Lakes Study ModelTrimmer Jig.
1) Remove Impression Once Plaster Cures
Once plaster sets (45minutes), carefully removethe impressions so as not tobreak any teeth.Remove the preformedrubber base formers.
2) Prepare Models for Base Trim
Remove plaster bubbles fromthe occlusal surface.Chisel or cut excess plasterfrom the back of the modelparallel with the occlusalplane, allowing modelarticulation. For easier plaster removal, soak the models in water unlesstrimmed immediately after pouring.Determine if upper & lower models are to be trimmed togetherwith:
- Teeth articulation only.- Centric occlusion bite reference.- Centric relation registration.
14) Align Models to Trimmer Jig Base
Place upper model on jig.Reference the upper heel flushagainst the back of jig.Articulate lower model toupper. Heel of lower modelshould extend though backarms of jig base.
15) Draw Line On Lower Base
Slide referencing blockagainst base of lowermodel with the screwsfacing the back of jig.Draw a line along thelower model base.Remove referenceblock and models from trimmer jig.
16) Trim Lower Base to Line
Place articulated models ontable of trimmer.Reference upper model base ontrimmer table.Carefully push articulatedmodels against trimming wheel, keeping line parallel to wheel.Trim heels to line drawn fromjig.
11) Trim Heel 90º to MidlinePlace model on the table and handguide the back to the trimmingwheel.Keep the model base flat on thetable and reference the midpalatallineperpendicular to the trimmingwheel.Be sure to trim the heel tothe reference mark.
12) Heel Trimmed 90º to Midline
Place the upper model heel onthe jig to verify theperpendicular midpalatal trimto the heel.
13) Lower Base Bite Trimming Jig
3) Wehmer Dual Wheel Model Trimmer
The dual wheel modeltrimmer is the studymodel trimmer of choicein most commerciallaboratories. This trimmer has twowheels, one for rough trimming and the second for smoothingand finishing the rough-cut bases. The orthodontic tables control base angle trim. The vertisquare is a padded plate that the occlusal surface ofthe dentition is referenced to when leveling the base’s bottom. The angle guide is used to trim the side, heel and front baseangles by sliding the heel of the model along the guide. The orthodontic table should be perpendicular to thetrimming wheel’s surface.
4) Rough Trim Heel of Upper Model
Minimally trim the upper baseheel approximately 90º tothe midpalatal line until theentire arch can be referencedagainst the vertisquare push-plate (see photo in step 6).
5) Upper Model on Jig Base with Referencing Panel
Place upper model on basereferencing jig with teethresting on platform.
Identify amount of baserequiring trimming to meet35mm line or 13mm sulcusbase depth (see step 8).
Remove referencing panel fromtrimmer jig base. The referencing block slidesalong the vertical arms of the jigbase, with the screws facing theback of the jig.
Reference Mark
9) Model Base Heel Trim Reference
Identify most distal tooth oneach side of the upper arch.Articulate models to verifythat lower posterior teethare anterior to reference line(potential problem with ClassII malocclusions).Measure 3/8” - 1/4” behindmost distal tooth reference onone side of the arch (first orsecond molar). If third molarsare present, place referencemark 2-3mm behind tooth.
10) Reference Midline to Jig
Place pretrimmed upperheel on jig to identify trimrequired.
8) Model Base Trimming Height
Model bases are trimmed parallelto each other.ABO base heights should be noless than 13mm at the lowestcarved area.Total height of both upper andlower models articulated shouldbe approximately 70mm (35mm each).
6) Parallel Upper Base to Occlusion
Reference the model againstthe vertisquare.Slide the vertisquare into theortho-table slot, holding themaxillary occlusal surfacetightly against the pad.Slide vertisquare and modeltoward the trimming wheel.Once the base’s bottom hasbeen completely leveled relative to the occlusion, remove themodel from the trimmer.
7) Check Upper Base Trim to Jig
Place model on jigto verify parallelbase trim toocclusal surface.Base height isapproximately35mm from theocclusal surface or noless than 13mm at the lowest carved area (see step 8).The maxillary model, with teeth on a level surface, may bechecked with a small level from side-to-side and front-to-back.

12) Heel Trimmed 90º to Midline
Place the upper model heel onthe jig to verify theperpendicular midpalatal trimto the heel.
