Les espices des trichopteres de la faune de Rourmnie sont presenties en ordre philetique. Pour
chaque espece sont mention&: les synonymes, I'areal, les lieux de capture et les auteurs qui ont au dit le
materid.
The studies onRom an ian T richoptera (especially A. Murgoci, 1951-1975 and
L. Botog4neanu, 1952-1978) emphasizcd very interesting systematic, faunistic,
zoogcographic and
ecological
aspects.
Fo r continuing thc rescarchcs it is ncccssary to completc and b ring up to the
datc all information concerning this group of insects, firstly as a checklist. This
checklist is no t only usefull but indispcnsablc for any furthcr study.
GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS
U p to the prcscnt, for thc Romanian
territory
thcrc have bccn idcntificd
-
267
trich optc ra species. For thc oth cr 8-10 spccics thc idcntification is uncertain. T he
last ones arc not included among thc 267; in thc tcxt they a re mentioned in brief notes.
Thc specics belong to 19 familics.
As in the European fauna, Lim neph ilidae family is the dominating one, with
89 species (33.33%) together with Leptoceridae family with 38 spccies (14.24%)
(Tab.
1).
Taken together, thc two familics rcprcscnt 47.57%, almost a half of the
wholc Trichoptera fauna of Romania.
Rhyacophilidae, Hydroptilidae, Hydropsychidae and Glossosomatidae arc
rcprcscntcd by a smaller pcrccntagc, of 4 4 % (in absolutc valuc cach of them
com prisin g 10-21 species
-
Tab.
1).
Thc othcr familics havc a much smallcr
rcprcscntation, of 0.75-3%. Ecno midae , T hr em m ati da e and Helicop sychidae
(familics which have a vcry small nurnbcr of spccics) rcprescnt a perccntagc of
0.37% cach. Odontoceridae
-
0.75%; Lepidostomatidae and Brachycentridae
Phylopotamidae
-
1.85% and Goerida e
-
2.62%.
Thc geographical arca with thc most divcrsificd Trichoptera spccics fauna is
Banat (Banat Mountains) with 168 spccics; that mcans 68% from the entire nurnbcr
of thc Trichoptera spccics from Romania.

Banat Mountains are under thc influcnce of thc Mcditcrranean clirnatc; the
ben thic substra tum is diversificd hcrc; thcrc a re karstic areas wi th a high s tability of
the ecological
niches and of thc flow of the running waters.
Thc ranges of Banat, Southern, Eastcm and Wcstcrn Carpathians, Maramureg
and Bucovina are minutcly studicd b y Botoglncanu, and by Murgoc i within the last
four decades; Mocsary and Pongracz made studics, at thc bcginning of thc century,
as well as Klapalek.
Th e hilly and tablcland ranges are po or in Trichoptcra, both as numb er of the
specics and as individuals of th e same spccics. Evcn i f thc climatc is as cold as that of
thc hights, o r a little bit warmer, thc mobility of the mincral particlcs of the benthic
substratum and the variations of
thc watcr flow, infltlcncc strongly the activity of
Trichoptcra populations.
The sporadic mentions of thc Trichoptcra from thc Moldavian tablcland
rangcs and from thc Danubc Dclta can bc cxplaincd also by thc fact that these
geographical zones of Romania are insufficicntly studicd. In thc D anubc Dclta thcre
are spccics belonging to
7
familics (Tab. 1). Thc uniform ity of thc co nd itio ns of the
microhabitat should bc onc of thc causcs of thc limitcd distribution and thc specific
d ivcr s i ty of thc f auna of th c Tr ichop tc ra . Mcrc , in th c Dan ub c Dcl ta , the
Lepto ceridae arc prcvalcnt cvcn in thc d ct ri~ nc nt f thc Lim nephilida e unlikc all the
othc r geographical arcas whc re the last oncs arc on thc first placc (Tab. I).
Making a comparison bctwccn the Moldavian platcau and Transylvania, a
very important diffcrcncc appears. In Moldavia, thcrc arc only 8 specics bclonging
to 3 familics and in Transylvania thcre arc
87
spccics bclonging to 15 familics (Tab.
1).
The majority of the specics citcd by thc authors has bccn collected on the
outskirts of thc Transylvanian platcau, rcspcctivcly from thc rangcs: Sibiu, Cluj,
Tara Birsa dcprcssion (Bragov rangcs), Plgilrag dcprcssion, adjoining zones to the
moun tainous massifs; thcy arc ranges which influcnccd stron gly t he Trichop tera
fauna from this platcau. The rcgion of Moldavia is a hilly onc and we considcr that
the spccics poorn ess from this arca can bc cxplain also from th is poin t of view. More
than that, the charactcristics of thc Moldavian running watcrs, the flow variation
(many running watcrs havc a temporary flow) lcad to thc explanation of thc small
nurnb cr of thc spccics.
In thc Romanian Plain thcrc arc rccordcd
77
spccics in comparison with
36
spccics, rccordcd in the Wcstcrn Plain. Sornc rangcs (thc Wcstcrn Plain and the
Danubc Dclta) arc insuff icicntly studicd unlikc the Romanian Plain where L.
B ot o~ 3n ca nu nd M urgoci collcctcd a lot of matcrial. In th c Rom anian Plain, the
Leptoceridae are representcd by 18 spccics and in thc Wcstcrn Plain, only by
2
spccics. Dcaling with thc spccics from thc lcntic habitats, swamps, ponds in thc
Romanian Plain thcrc arc favorablc conditions for thc spccics of thcsc familics.
Similar conditions are also met in thc Danubc Dclta, thc specics of Leptoceridae
bcing met almost as frequent as in thc Romanian Plain. If wc make a comparison
bctwccn the nurnbcr of thc Leptoceridae spccics from thc Rom anian Plain with that

of thc Danube Delta (12 species from the D anube Delta and 18 from the Romanian
Plain), it can be observed a similitude, although th e surface of th e Romanian Plain is
over 15 times larger than that of thc Danubc Dclta.
As concern othe r families thc things stands in a different way. L imnep hili dae
family which do n ot enjoys still waters biotopes, as Leptoceridae do, is represented
by 20 species in the Romanian Plain and by 16 species in thc Western Plain. The
valucs are almost the same if w e take into account that t he surface of t hc R omanian
Plain is more than double than th c o thc r one. O th e r familics have a s imilar
distribution: Hydropsychidae, Hydroptilidae, Beraeidae, Glossosomatidae and
o t h e r s ( T a b . 1 ) . P o l y c e n t r o p o d i d a e , P s y c h o m y i d a e , R h y a c o p h i l i d a e ,
Ph ilop ota m ida e are present cithcr in thc Romanian Plain o r in the W estern one
(Tab. 1).
Rhyacoph ilidae family is represented b y 21 species (in Romania), 1 1 of them
can bc found in
Bana t (Bana t Moun ta ins) ; th i s th ing co r responds w i th t he
percentage of 52.39%, thus about a half of thc species of this family is present in
Romania.
Ph i lopo tamidae , Ecnomidae , Brachycen t r idae , Lep idos tomat idae and
Helicopsychid ae are families with fcw spccics presenting a percentage of 100% ( for
cxamplc E cno midae has a singlc spccies,
Ecnomus tenellus
and Helicopsychidae,
FIclicopsychc bacescui
Orgh. & Bots., spread all over thc co un try approxim ately).
Th c frequency of thc spccics, rcportcd to th e total num bcr of the species from
a certain region is presentcd in the tablc 1.
The greatest specific divcrsity is rccordcd in Banat with 168 spccies, in the
South ern C arpathia ns with 134 spccics, in
M a r a m u r c ~with 109, in the Western
Carpathians with 101, in thc Eastern Carpathians with 98, and in Transylvania
Plateau with 87. Banat has the greatest divcrsity of the familics, hcre bcing present
specics from all the 19 familics.
Th c o th cr above mentioned regions havc the same nu m ber of famil ies ,
excepting E cnomidae, Th rem ma tida e and Helicopsychidae with on e spccies each.
Thc specics list is prcscntcd in thc tablc
2,
with the geographical distribu tion
on thc Romanian territory as wcll as thc adjaccnt ranges of thc Central and South-
Eastcrn Europc (thc figurcs from thc tablc corrcspond to thc regions from the
"L im no faun a Eu rop aea" , cd. 2, L. BotoqELncanu and I-I. Malicky, 1978: 332-359).
As in thc Austrian Trichoptcra fauna (Malicky,
Zctt. Arbeit. &err. Ent.,
41,
Jg.,
1/2,
1989), in Romania thc data rcgarding thc gcographical distribution is also
incomplctc; somc ranges arc insufficicntly studicd; that is wh y w c certainly considcr
that ncw data conccming thc spccics, still unrccordcd, will appcar in th e near future.
Thcrcfo rc w e do no t venturc oursclvcs into an cxhaustive explanation of this matter,
f o r this rcason wc d o no t vcnturc oursclvcs ncithcr in calculating some divcrsity
indcxes, which are somctirnes uscd in statistical intcrpretations (Simpson index,
Shannon-Wiener indcx and so on).

In Europe the Glossosomatidae family is represented by 41 species which

thc spccics described in Europe) in comparison with 85 spccics, which w here
mentioned in "Limnofauna Europaea", the edition from 1978.
Some spccics have bccn mentioncd orlly oncc, but according to their very

Stactobia caspersi Ulmcr is mcntioncd only once, in Banat, at Domoglcd

can be found on the Romanian territory frcqucntly. The same with
