5 At the Mandela Centre, a community service centre in the middle of a poor Afro-Caribbean estate hangs large photos and billboards of Nelson Mandela in his youth and after his release from prison. Tim Kamuza Banda reports in the Daily nation (April 15, 2001) that one of the workers at the centre says of Mandela: ‘Mandela is probably one of those few African leaders who fought for freedom, was imprisoned and later ruled the country without transferring public funds to foreign accounts. He is great.’ It is reported that a 27 year old mentioned: ‘I have to see this man, Mandela. He is simply a great leader and I don’t think there is any African leader who can match him.’ 6 The building where the Centre was to be located remains incomplete 9 years later (SA High Commission in Mauritius – March 2007)
