    Experts: States recession is over

Unemployment rate in MecostaCounty has dropped 3 percent in

past year LANSING New government guresreleased Tuesday show what manyeconomic experts have suspected:Michigans deep recession is over.

fter two years of shrinking, the statesconomy grew 2.9 percent last year,

aster than the national average of 2.6ercent, according to the U.S. Bureauf Economic Analysis. Thats a dramatic

urnaround from declines of 4.3 percentn 2008 and

percent in 2009.ast year, Michigan was the 15th

astest growing state in the country, auge leap from its 48th spot in 2009.ichigans economy also expandedore rapidly than any other Great

akes state except Indiana, which grewy 4.6 percent.

he increase in economic activitys being driven by the rebound in

anufacturing of durable goods suchs automobiles. This kind of bounceack normally occurs after a severeconomic downturn, said University of ichigan economist Donald Grimes.

Were back to the future, he said. Itsvery good beginning to the recovery.

In Mecosta County, manufacturersre gaining more condence in thearketplace and creating more

obs after seeing increases inproduction orders, said Bill Mrdeza, executive director for the MecostaCounty Development Corporation.Unemployment gures in the county aredown to

10.1 percent in April 2011, compared tothe same time last year at 13.4 percentin April 2010.

We now have a little more certaintyto move forward, Mrdeza said.Companies that had to downsizein the last couple of years, are nowsettled into their place in the neweconomy and saying, We can continueto be protable and move forward tomanufacturing levels that we haventseen recently. ... I think its a littleearly to rejoice, but Im optimistic wereheading in the right direction.

In Osceola County, unemployment hasdeclined from 15.8 percent in April 2010to 11.7 percent in April 2011 the mostrecent month data was available.

s an MSU Extension educator headingp economic development in Osceolaounty, Dan Massy said he sees the

eported unemployment decline, alongith business openings this year he PGW plant in Evart, the Herseyoller Mills Store as well as several

estaurants and the constructionf Yoplaits milk process facility as

    indicators of an improved businessclimate.

Manufacturers, the ones that I havebeen dealing with, have said theyvebeen more busy, Massy added.

The states economy returned togrowth last year, with economicoutput expanding by nearly 3 percent, according to new gures releasedTuesday by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA).

Whether the state can sustain this

pace is uncertain. Recent nationalslowdowns in auto sales, manufacturingand hiring have raised fears of adouble-dip recession. But manyeconomists caution that the hiccupsare caused by temporary problems, such as the earthquake and tsunamiin Japan and high gas prices. Theyexpect the economic recovery to regainmomentum.

Michigans economic growth this year could range from 1.9 percent to 3percent.

Its going to be a slow recovery,Grimes said.

In 2010, Michigans real gross domesticproduct the value of goods andservices produced in the state, adjustedfor ination totaled $345 billion, up

from $335 billion in 2009.But the states economy still has aways to go to make up for losses thispast decade, when 857,000 jobs wereeliminated. Michigans economy is 7percent smaller than it was in 2000,with the number of employed peopledown 17 percent, according to CharlesBallard, an economics professor atMichigan State University.

And its no secret that the statesunemployment rate is still stuck in thedouble digits. And the housing crisisshows few signs of abating soon.

Technically were in recovery becausethe economy is growing, Ballard said. But for a lot of people, as long as youare below where you were, you are stillin a recession.

Much of the growth in Michiganseconomy last year can be traced tothe recovery under way at the Detroitautomakers and their suppliers, whichhave been hiring thousands of workersand ramping up production. Durablegoods manufacturing including autoproduction accounted for 1.5 percentof the 2.9 percent increase in the statesreal GDP.

Other key growth industries for the state

were wholesale and retail trade andthe manufacturing of nondurable itemssuch as food. Industries that shrankthe most last year were real estate andgovernment.

Michigan is not an anomaly. Durablegoods manufacturing also led thenations economic recovery last year, according to the BEA. On the ip side, the construction industry continuesto be a drag on the U.S. economy, declining for the sixth consecutive year.

Like Michigans, the U.S. economyreturned to growth last year. Itexpanded by 2.6 percent, after shrinking by 0.3 percent in 2008 and by2.5 percent in 2009.

Last year, North Dakota had the fastestgrowing state economy, with a 7.1percent increase in real GDP. Wyomingbrought up the rear, with its economycontracting by 0.3 percent after leadingthe nation with a hefty 9.8 percent gainin 2009. The only other state with ashrinking economy was Nevada, whichsaw its real GDP fall by 0.2 percent.

Tips to Put a Stop to EarlyAging

(NewsUSA) - Dermatologists cantstress it enough: How you treatyour skin now will affect its futureappearance. While it may seem silly toworry about wrinkles long before youhave any, its true that preparation paysoff.

According to dermatologists, morewomen in their twenties are asking

for anti-aging tips. So, what can youdo keep your skin looking youngand healthy? Kiehls Since 1851, acompany that specializes in skin andhair care formulas derived from naturalingredients, offers the following tips:

    * Rest up. Theres a reason youlook tired and you look great arentsynonymous. But did you know that theposition in which you sleep can alsoaffect your looks? If you sleep face-down, uid can collect beneath your eyes. Try sleeping face-up with your head slightly elevated with pillows. If you do wake up with facial swelling, trytapping the skin beneath your eyes or applying a cold compress.

    * Apply vitamin C. Your skin containsmore vitamin C than any other antioxidant, including the much-touted vitamin E. To keep vitamin Cat an optimal level, make sure youare applying a skincare formula that

contains plenty of vitamin C.Vitamin C helps keep skin even andbright, and it offers potent antioxidantprotection from environmentalstressors, such as pollution andsunlight, said Dr. Adam Geyer, fellow othe American Academy of Dermatology,Instructor in Clinical Dermatology atColumbia University and Kiehls Brand

    Ambassador.

Two of Kiehls products, Powerful-Strength Line-Reducing Concentrateto improve tone and texture all over the face and Line-Reducing Eye-Brightening Concentrate formulatedspecically for the eye area to boostradiance and minimize wrinkles, contain10.5 percent vitamin C. Unlike manyretinol products, they wont causephotosensitivity and irritation and aregentle enough for twice-daily use. Applythem after cleansing, both day andnight to obtain the greatest results.

    * Reduce your sodium intake. You canmake your doctor and your skin happyat the same time! When you eat toomuch sodium, you can cause your bodyto shift uid into extracellular spaces, especially beneath your eyes. Avoidexcess sodium intake to benet bothyour health and your skin.
