Tackling Mount Kilimanjaro

Since retiring, the Grathwohl’s have been enjoying their free time by taking adventures such as traveling the country and the world. Their biggest adventure to date has been climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, which they did in the fall of 2012. The Grathwohl’s weren’t experienced climbers, but figured the climb would be a doable task since they all are physically fit and workout regularly. They underestimated the difficulty of the journey. Mt. Kilimanjaro is the world’s tallest free standing mountain, measuring 19,341 feet high. Camping on the mountain was very primitive. There are no restroom conveniences, just buckets of water to wash. With Bruce’s former Marine status, these conditions weren’t anything he hadn’t experienced, but for Peg, it was somewhat of a shock. Their best investment was renting a bucket and small tent for $100. “I’m not particularly fond of heights, so looking down, down, down was very unnerving for me,” Peg Grathwohl explained. “I never expected that we wouldn’t make it, but I had some moments when I was ready to cry because it was a lot harder than I thought it would be.” There are many beautiful sites on the climb, starting in the rain forest, transitioning into an Alpine desert, and ending in a glacial environment, where no animals or vegetation existed. The eighth day of climbing proved to be the toughest. The terrain turned into a 30-degree slope requiring them to lean into the mountain to move forward. With a group right ahead of them, they could only advance three steps at a time, making for a tiring, stop and go pace. But the eighth day also brought on the full moon, allowing for a little more guiding light. The Grathwohls left the base camp at midnight and reached the Stella Point, the rim of the crater, at about 6:30 AM just as the sun was coming over the horizon. When they hiked the final 1,000 feet of elevation to reach Uhuru point, all they could do was just stand there. “You want to stand there and celebrate for awhile, but you’re so worn out from going straight uphill,” said Bruce. “Plus the guides know that you have to go back down from 19,300 to about 10,200 feet that day so they don’t let you linger too long to take in the views.” “Even when you’re done, you’re not done,” said Peg, who felt like the hardest part of the climb was getting downhill. “Your leg muscles are just jelly once you’ve gotten to the top, and it’s hard to control your steps in the loose gravel. With the steep grade, gravity is jam-ming your feet into your boots all the way down. It was very uncomfortable.” “For us as a family, it was a shared experience of good times and bad,” said Peg. “Besides the sense of accomplishment, the biggest takeaway was the beauty of Africa, but also the poverty of Africa. We have so much that we take for granted. It’s good to be reminded of that sometimes.” “It was something I’ve always wanted to do…. But it’s the last mountain I’m going to climb for sure,” laughed Bruce. “We paid a lot of money to be really miserable for nine days.”

The numbers 1-9 have to be in each box, row and column. So if you have one with

8 numbers, you can work out the last one. And you can see where a number goes in

a box if it's in that row or column, you can't put it in that row or column in the box.

Riddles of the Month:

What goes up and down the stairs without moving?

What can you catch but not throw?

I can run but not walk. Wherever I go, thought follows close

behind. What am I?

Be careful with this tricky word problem. All is not what

it seems!

1. If you put a coin in an empty bottle and insert a cork

into the neck of the bottle, how could you remove the

coin without taking the cork out or breaking the bottle?

An Architectural Review FormAn Architectural Review FormAn Architectural Review FormAn Architectural Review Form–––– When is it needed? When is it needed? When is it needed? When is it needed?

If a resident plans to make any changes to his property, an application to the Architectural Review committee is required. Please do not assume that because the modification you are contemplating is minor or that a neighbor has already performed a similar task that you do not need to submit an application. If a modification to your home has not been approved by the ARC, the potential exists for the Board of Directors to have you remove and restore the condition of the Property to the original condition. If you would like a ARC Form you may email your form request to [email protected].

Waste not, want not. Picking up pet poo may not be high on your “things-I-love-to-do” list, but it’s part of being a responsible pet owner and a considerate neighbor.
