Meet The Stereographer…
He adjusts the convergence (angulation)

Stereoscopic Image Gathering
Screen Size Considerations
• What size is the Stereographer’s display?
• What size is the viewers display?

Divergence
• Excessive eye separation can render the production unwatchable
This illustrates an important point.
Stereoscopic Image Gathering
• Perceptual 3D depth changes with image size
• Conservative depth settings minimize the effect
• Viewing distance also effects scale

Avatar in 3D at the theater was great, but movies don’t need scores, stats or updates on what’s coming up next.
3DTV Graphics
A natural subject for 3D is of course sports – BUT!
Where do you position the graphics?
Wherever you place these elements is likely to be wrong

wrong.
Best Choice; put the graphics in front of the action

Best Choice; put the graphics in front of the action
• What if the Action conflicts with the graphic
• You could drop the graphic

What about subtitles and lower thirds?

Reserve a 2D space for them?

No Depth Mapping yet

No Depth Mapping - yet
No simple answers
Perhaps the ideal is a 2D / 3D mixture
We have a lot to learn to be able to create 3D TV well and properly manage visual conflicts. I suspect we will see some really bad and

possibly nauseating 3D along the way.
However, 3D is no longer a fantasy. Only time will tell if it will receive general viewer acceptance and become part of everyday life. Meanwhile we should at least be aware of the issues we face.

Readiness for Automation
There are many steps to prepare for automation, but the first is to have a working control room with all the
necessary media available
