TREK TO ANCIENT
PETRA JORDAN
w w w . y o u r c o m p a n y . c o m 2
This adventure captures Jordan’s desert landscapes at its best
and culminates with getting off the beaten track in the famous
ancient city of Petra.
Jordan has welcomed travellers for centuries from camel
caravans to intrepid adventurers. With its World Heritage Sites,
friendly people and awe-inspiring desert landscapes, this
country is a trekkers paradise.
You’ll experience epic landscapes of weathered sandstone and
reddened dunes, encompassed by a salt sea at the lowest
point on earth, and trek past canyons flowing with seasonal
water, oases of palm trees and explosions of springtime flowers
scattered across arid hills. Your route winds its way along
dramatic mountains, through spectacular wadi’s and vast ever-
changing desert landscapes where you will enjoy delicious
camp meals and a good night’s rest under a blanket of stars.
Finishing in Petra, the ancient Nabataean city framed by
Jordan’s sandstone escarpments, it is the jewel in the crown of
the country’s many antiquities. With sites flung over a vast rocky
landscape and a mood that changes with the shifting light as
the sun moves across the sky, this is a highlight that rewards
you as a long distance trekker.
Plus there’s time to relax with an effortless dip in the Dead S
Sea or cool off in your hotel swimming pool before
enjoying a delicious celebration meal on your last
night in Jordan.

Holy Land, having led his people from Sinai. Mount Nebo offers fantastic views of the
Jordan valley and the Dead Sea, with the West Bank city of Jericho visible from the
summit and Jerusalem apparent on very clear days.
Lunch will be in a local restaurant near the imposing Crusader castle of Kerak. This is the
largest and best-preserved of the Crusader Castles in the region. It was built in 1132 by
Baldwin of Jerusalem and sits on top of a steep outcrop, an almost impregnable
position. It became famous at the time of the Crusades as one of the chain of fortresses
used in the Holy War against Islam. From here you will continue your road journey south
enjoying the fantastic views over magnificent Wadi Araba before briefly stretching your
legs at Shobak Castle. You will then arrive at Mansura where your campsite awaits and
dinner will be served.

DAY 7
Trek to Petra and free afternoon to explore
Following your last breakfast in the desert you will continue your trek to Petra. You will
enter little Petra reserve and negotiate narrow paths clinging to the side of deep
canyons. You will have a whole day to enjoy Petra including a halfway guided tour of
the rose-red city which is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Petra was
carved into the Sharah Mountains by the industrious Nabataeans, who grew rich
through their control of the frankincense trade routes through Arabia. Petra fell into
obscurity about a thousand years ago, while its existence and location, were kept a
closely guarded secret by the local Bedouin, until 1812 when the Swiss explorer John
Louis Burckhardt tricked his way into the site.
Your guided tour of this unique and unforgettable site starts with a walk through the Siq,
the narrow and winding fissure between towering cliffs, which you will exit through a
tiny cleft to be confronted by the awe-inspiring splendour of the Treasury monument,
Petra’s most elaborate ruin, sculpted into the sandstone rock. Local legend has it that
this tomb once stored the gifts of the Queen of Sheba to Solomon. You will continue to
explore the royal tombs, a roman theatre and the colonnaded street to name but a
few of the astounding attractions on view. Walking up the 800 steps you will be greeted
with an amazing view of the vast and impressive Monastery (Ed Deir) and extending to
more views over the whole area.
The afternoon is free for you to further explore one of the most impressive and exciting
sites of ancient history anywhere in the world. One option is that you can walk up to the
High Place (Attuf Ridge), once the venue for sacrificial offerings, which gives wonderful
views over the Petra Basin and out towards Jebel Harun and Wadi Sabra.

TOP TIPSD e s e r t t r e k k i n g
• Dress the part. Wear wicking or merino wool based t-shirt to wick any
moisture away from your body. Do not wear cotton t-shirts
• Have good sun protection – full brimmed hat or cap with a buff/scarf to
protect your neck, use SPF50 sunscreen
• Train in your trekking kit. including wearing of your rucksack with weight
inside, in varying weather conditions so you know your kit is both suitable
and comfortable for your trek
• Wear good sturdy hiking boots which are comfy, well worn-in
• Look after your feet – blister prevention
• Climbing up and down sand dunes can be very taxing and a good method
for walking in the desert is to follow the footprints of other walkers. The
compacted sand means that you don't sink as you walk and it is a more
stable surface to walk on
