What’s it all about?

Where will the funds raised go?

How do I register?

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service and Jayes Travel invite you to embark on the adventure of a lifetime! Rated as one of the top five treks in the world, Machu Picchu is the site of an ancient Inca city, set high in the Andes of Peru. During this challenge, you will rediscover the Inca Empire with us, following an ancient trail through the magnificent Salkantay Valley to the legendary ruins of Machu Picchu, spend 3 days volunteering for the Hatunsongo Project, improving the quality of life for children in Pomacanchi, build lasting bonds with your fellow trekkers while supporting the work of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service!

The funds that you raise for the service will go directly to providing life-saving medical services to people in dire emergency situations. It costs approximately $5,000.00 per flight to retrieve and transport those patients with the most severe medical conditions; those who have been injured in accidents, transferred from hospital to hospital, lost at sea, stranded in remote rural locations or critically ill newborn babies that need to reach a specialist hospital immediately. Your money will assist people of all ages and walks of life.

If you have any further questions, or are ready to register, please contact Annette Watson on 4952 0000 or email [email protected]

About the Westpac Rescue Helicopter ServiceThe Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service (WRHS) is a not-for-profit organization and registered Charity. Its sole purpose is to provide a high standard aero medical search and rescue service for the communities within its vast areas of operation, since 1975. More than 1.2 million people live within the 132,000 square kilometer regions of NSW that are serviced by three helicopters based at Broadmeadow in the city of Newcastle and at Tamworth Airport. The Service operates 4 Helicopters, two twin engine Bell 412SP - fits up to 4 patients on stretchers, 2 medical staff plus pilot and 2 crew and has a 2 person rescue hoist. It can carry 2 neonatal units with parents and medical staff & crew. In addition the Service operates 2 twin engine BK-117 one based in Newcastle and one at our New England base in Tamworth. The BK 117 aircraft fits 1 patient on a stretcher and has a 1 person rescue hoist. It can carry 1 neonatal unit. The operational cost for these aircraft is between $3000 & $5000 per hour. The yearly operating budget is $14 million. Some funding is provided by the NSW Department of Health but more than $8 million is raised from sponsorships, business partnerships, community fundraising, donations, payroll deductions and special events. The service operates 24 hours per day and 7 days a week, performing 3 key roles:

1. Primary accident response, where we fly to the scene of an accident and then transfer the patient to hospital.2. Secondary response, where we fly to a district hospital and transfer a patient to a larger medical facility as required.3. Search and rescue in conjunction with AUSSAR and NSW Police.

Each year the helicopters in the Hunter/Mid North Coast and New England/North West regions fly more than 1000 life-saving missions.

This service is provided free of charge, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year to anyone in need.

Richard Jones, General Manager Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service

“Our 24/7 Service ensures that no-one in our region goes without expert medical care when needed. Our helicopters and crew fly to all parts of northern NSW to assist people of all ages and backgrounds including premature babies, farmers, people involved in accidents on the road or at work, those that have a mishap at the beach or in the bush and acutely ill people in hospital.

“Most people don’t want to use the helicopter service. But they want to be sure it is available if they, or a member of their family, ever need to use it. This model of community ownership is one of our great strengths and we invite everyone to support the Service in whatever way they can because it is such a vital community asset.”

A boating accident on the shores of Lake Macquarie 18 years ago sparked one of the Service’s longest and most valued friendships. Lili le Mesurier wasn’t quite two years old when the keel of a boat fell and pinned her at her uncle’s birthday party. Her mother, Simone remembers the moment vividly.

“She was totally pinned under the weight, only her tiny feet were in sight. My brother and his friends lifted the weight off her and the ambulance was called.” After the ambulance arrived the Rescue Helicopter was tasked to airlift Lili to the John Hunter Hospital.

“Three times on the flight Lili crashed and the on board paramedics revived her,” Simone recounted.

“It’s very possible that she wouldn’t have survived the trip in the ambulance.” Lili was in a coma for seven days. Her condition had not changed and her devastated family were facing a decision about life support when she woke up the next morning. Lili suffered a broken skull from the front right side of her head to the top of her spine. All the bones in her right ear had been broken and she had damage to the right side of her brain. Most importantly however, she was alive.

Accident begins life-long support

Lili has now finished school and is currently enjoying a working holiday in Europe. Since the accident, Simone has passionately supported the Service through the formation of the Angel II Volunteer Support Group in the Dora Creek area. One of the first events the Support Group organised was a charity day with Rugby League legends, Wayne Pearce and Paul Sironen, who met a number of local children who had been assisted by the Service. Simone said the event raised around $18,000 for the Rescue Helicopter.

“It’s such a strange feeling, knowing that these people had such an impact on our lives. They do such a fantastic job.” View the full story at: westpacrescue.com.au/Webisodes

Will I have the opportunity to meet other trekkers before I go? Yes, we will arrange a meet and greet evening for everyone (locations permitting) prior to departure. We will also set up an online community Facebook group where everyone will be able to keep up to date with preparation activities, events and fundraising tips etc.

Can I extend my stay? Yes! We understand that it’s a long way to go, so Jayes Travel will have several add-on packages for you to consider or you can choose to travel independently after the trek. NB: Additional travel arrangements are at your own cost.

Do I need to have a certain level of fitness to complete this trek? The Inca Trail is considered a moderate hike. It’s not a technical hike but there are a lot of Inca staircases to walk up and down, and the altitude may affect some individuals.

Is altitude sickness common? And how high is the Inca Trail? It is impossible to predict who will be affected by altitude. Your ability to adapt to high altitude is determined by your genetic makeup and has little to do with fitness or health. Most people will have no problem as long as they take the time to acclimatise properly. A full day spent in Cusco (3249m), taking it easy and drinking plenty of water, is usually enough for most people. The highest point you will reach while hiking the Inca Trail is 4200 meters. You will sleep at 3600 meters for one or two nights. This trek also allows for further acclimatisation in Hatunsongo for 3 days prior to the actual trek, where we will be taking part in a volunteer program.

This tour of Lima, known as the “City of the Kings” takes us to the Plaza de Armas to see the ornate Church of San Francisco, the Presidential Palace, the Cathedral and City Hall. We then visit the Larco Herrera Museum. Founded in 1926, this museum showcases remarkable chronological galleries providing an excellent overview on 3,000 years of development of Peruvian pre-Columbian history.

The Larco Museum is located in a colonial mansion (from the 18th century), built over a 9th century pre-Columbian pyramid; it is a unique place in Peru. This museum is the best way to understand the rich history of Peru.

The exhibition is displayed in a geographical and historical sense allowing visitors to discover the origins of the Incas by wandering around the collection’s 5000 years of Andean civilization. Additionally, the Larco Museum exhibits the best and most prestigious gold and jewellery collection of Ancient Peru.

VOLUNTEER PROGRAM

THURSDAY 15th, Friday 16th & Saturday 17th October 2015

Day 6, 7 & 8

We are transferred via coach in a local bus to the village of Hatunsongo where we will be staying in Casa de la Calle San Roque for 3 days, completing the volunteer program.

Hatunsongo is located in Pomacanchi, a district in the Acomayo province, approximately 107km from Cusco. The village still preserves its traditions and customs.

Pomacanchi has a main street called San Roque and is one of only four that are paved in the area. The village currently has a medical post, three schools and an upper school but unfortunately the school system isn’t the best, so parents often do not want their children to attend school believing that it is a waste of time.

The aim of the Hatunsonqo project is not to change reality but to improve the quality of life for children in the region.

Peru Street House

Currently this house assists 34 boys and girls, with 10 high priority children sleeping there, the rest of the children still sleep in their homes and are cared for by their parents. The house provides children with food, clothing and above all education. There is a kitchen and dining room, a library and a bedroom and bathroom that is being renovated. The area where the house is located is a very poor rural area, where most of the children begin working in agriculture, attending to livestock and chores at an early age. Work is often a priority activity that impacts on school attendance.

All children go to school in the morning (from Monday to Friday) and attend Peru Street House to eat. While spending the afternoon in the house, volunteers assist the children in developing habits with study as well as many other activities that help children’s personal and social growth.

Why this project needs volunteers

The management and administration of the house depends on locals, Giovanni and Elizabeth, who are responsible for the children and welcome volunteers so that they have the best possible experience.

The house survives exclusively on the contributions of volunteers and this is also their only source of income for ongoing maintenance. Volunteers can provide support in a number of ways including financial contribution through private donations for maintenance and supplies and hands on assistance with various activities (see below).

Types of activities:

In the mornings:• Prepare breakfast for the children.• Helping in the kitchen and laundry• Preparation activities.

In the evenings:• Serve lunch to children.• School support and support for study at primary level (very important).• Develop extracurricular activities. • Telling stories, writing workshop, crafts and theatre.• Children’s games in groups.

4 Day Inca Trail Expedition

SUNDAY 18th October 2015

Monday 19th October 2015

Day 9 Day 10

Cusco – Piskacucho – Wayllabamba We will be picked up from our hotel at scheduled time, and transferred in our private car to Kilometre 82. The route will go through the beautiful Sacred Valley of the Incas. After approximately an hour and a half, we will cross the little town of Ollantaytambo, where we will make a little stop for some photo opportunities and have a short rest. We will continue our trip following a rural road that goes parallel to the railroad, which will lead us to Kilometre 82, here we will unpack and get prepared for our hike. Please have your passport ready here to show to the security personnel at the Sanctuary. We will then cross a bridge that will take us to the other side of the river where we will start climbing in a parallel line to the Urubamba River, which goes from north to west across the Sacred Valley.

In this first section of the Inca Trail, we will visit the Community of Miskay (2,800 metres), where we will stop for a visit to the Indigenous village and try the popular drink known as “chicha”, which is offered by the ladies here. Later we will start climbing through a little tableland where we will experience an amazing Andean landscape, and see at the base of the mountains, a beautiful Inca building known as “Patallacta” (2,750 m).

At this point we will stop and our local guide will provide us with information regarding this interesting Inca legacy. After that, we will continue walking for two hours along the Cusichaca River, going upwards until reaching a beautiful spot where we will stop for lunch and take a little break. Shortly after that, we will continue walking through a zone full of vegetation, where is highly probable that we will see the beautiful giant hummingbird native to the region. After a two hours walk we will arrive to our first camp, located in the zone of Wayllabamba at 3000 metres.

Total walking time: 5 – 6 hoursDistance: 12 kmInitial altitude: 2,750 m - Final 3,000 m

Wayllabamba – Warmiwañusca – Paqaymayu On the second day of the Inca Trail we will wake early, around 06:00 am. This will be necessary in order to get ready and have breakfast before starting the excursion. Later we will start walking through a narrow road covered by plants, across a little bridge that will take us towards a cloudy forest of unique beauty. In this section we will climb many stairs (taking all the time that we need) and stopping for a break when necessary. Following the route, we will arrive at the Llulluchapampa sector, where we will make a quick stop just to rest and prepare to climb to the highest point of our walk, the famous pass Warmyhuañuska, at 4,200 metres.

This sector includes about 2 kilometres of steep incline, for which we will recommend going slowly and stopping for a break whenever needed. This part is also known as one of the most beautiful landscapes of the world. Once we have reached the top of the mountain, we will be greeted with a spectacular view of the Andean mountains.

For this particular day, we recommend bringing some chocolates, lemon candy, a lot of water and even some coca leaves. On the top we will be able to take the classic pictures of the Inca Trail. Afterwards we will descend to a winding valley where we will stop and have lunch in one of the restaurants. During this last part it is possible to see a diverse range of wild birds.

At last we will arrive to the camp of Pacaymayo (3,600 m) where we will spend a comfortable night. Pacaymayo is an official camp, and that is why it has baths and showers, however, you should be aware that the water in this part is really cold.

Total walking time: 7 – 8 hoursDistance: 13 kmInitial altitude: 3,000m - Final 3,800 m

Day 11 Day 12

Paqaymayu - Chaq’Icocha – Wiñaywayna A lot of visitors feel that this is one of the longest days of the excursion, but at the same time, one of the most beautiful due to the presence of marvellous Inca buildings along the road. Today we will rise at 06:00 am. After a tasty breakfast we will start our walk, climbing up a steep road, arriving at Runkurakay ruins, a beautiful Inca oval building which was believed to be an Inca watchtower. After hearing the historical explanation we will continue until Runkurakay pass, at 3,900 metres. On route we will find a little lake where you can sometimes watch Andean geese and other native bird species.

After the pass, we will descend to a beautiful valley; here we will visit Sayacmarka ruins (3,624 metres). This is an interesting Inca construction, built over a steep slope, surrounded by stunning mountains. After visiting Sayacmarka, we will continue descending to the cloudy forest, arriving at the Puyupatamarka ruins, composed of impressive fountains and water channels that are spectacular works of hydraulic engineering made by the Incas.

We then continue on to the ruins of Wiñaywayna, without doubt one of the most beautiful ruins after Machu Picchu. Wiñaywayna means “forever young” and it is said that it acquired its name due to the abundance of an orchid that bears the same name. After exploring every corner of Wiñaywayna we head to our last camp, which is located a few metres away. This will be the night on which we will say goodbye to our porters and staff and we will have a small get-together to thank everyone for sharing with the group this beautiful experience.

Total walking time: 10 hoursDistance: 15 kmInitial altitude: 3,800 m - Final 2,650 m

Wiñaywayna - Machu Picchu – Cusco On the last day we will wake up very early, at 04:00 am. After breakfast, head off on the path that leads directly to Machu Picchu. It is advisable to bring a good flashlight, because this time it is normally dark here. After walking for about an hour and a half, we will arrive at Inti Punko or Puerta del Sol, a magnificent point from where you can see the city of Machu Picchu.

At this point we can relax for a few minutes, take photos and finally head down to reach one of the seven wonders of the world, Machu Picchu. It was long thought that Machu Picchu was only part of a legend, until in 1911 the American explorer Hiram Bingham discovered it after many expeditions in the area.

Machu Picchu rises to a height of 2,430m, in the middle of a tropical forest with an extraordinary location. It was without any doubt, one of the most amazing urban creations in Inca times. Its massive walls, terraces and ramps seem to be continually cut in the rocky cliffs. Our guide will take you on a tour of the most impressive parts of this beautiful Inca city. This will take us about 2 hours, after which we have free time to explore each city at our own pace and preference. We are then taken by bus to the town of Aguas Calientes and to the station for the train that will take us back to Cusco.
