2011 Annual Report

I want to thank each one of our supporters for making 2011 an amazing year for Trees Water amp People (TWP) Internationally we worked with both our long-time and new local partners to build clean cookstoves for families in Honduras Guatemala El Salvador Nicaragua Haiti and Uganda We also continued to grow trees and develop community nurseries that provide a wide variety of local benefits as well as helping offset global carbon emissions

Right here in the United States our Tribal Renewable Energy Program reached even more people living on reservations across the Great Plains Due to the growing success of our Green Job Training Program for Native Americans we began construction of the Red Cloud Training Annex which will allow us to accommodate more trainees and host larger workshops

In 2011 we also added a new core area to our efforts to help people and communities become even more sustainable and self-sufficient Through a grant from the US Department of Statersquos Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas (ECPA) we began distributing Cleantech products to rural families in Honduras and Peru These small solar devices provide light and phone charging capability to ldquolast milerdquo communities who often live beyond the grid existing in an energy poverty few of us can even imagine ECPA also funded the creation of two Renewable Energy Demonstration Centers in Honduras and Nicaragua as well as some of the curriculum development for our evolving Nicaraguan Center for Biomass and Climate Change

By any standards 2011 was an outstanding year for Trees Water amp People and sets us up to reach even more people in 2012 Our success is ultimately created by the caring and sharing of our friends and supporters and the hard work of our local partners The future is what we make it Together we are creating a better more sustainable world built on collaboration exchanging skills and sharing resources

Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas

bull Began a 3-year partnership with the US Department of Statersquos Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas (ECPA) working on the ldquoImproving Access to Clean Energy in Latin Americardquo initiative

bull Supported by the ECPA we launched a commercial Cleantech distribution network to deliver solar powered lighting and cell phone charging products to rural communities in Honduras and Peru giving ldquolast milerdquo communities access to affordable lighting and electricity

bull Formed a partnership with the National Agricultural University in Catacamas Olancho Honduras to develop an ECPA-funded solar energy demonstration center

Clean Cookstovesbull Built and distributed more than 4700 clean cookstoves

throughout Guatemala Honduras Nicaragua El Salvador and Haiti improving indoor air quality for 23600 people and avoiding 38000 tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere

bull Launched commercial distribution of the Zanmi Pye Bwa clean cookstove in Port-au-Prince Haiti creating 12 local jobs and manufacturing 900 cookstoves

bull Formed a new partnership with Guatemalan natural resource and rural development organization Utrsquoz Chersquo which means ldquogood treerdquo in the indigenous language of Krsquoichersquo

bull Trained Utrsquoz Chersquo team in cookstove construction who then installed 25 units in two of their 32 partner villages

bull In partnership with Colorado-based Rodelle Vanilla we launched a commercial clean cookstove program for their network of Ugandan vanilla farmers

bull Designed a portable two-burner cookstove The Rodelle Rocket for market testing in rural communities of Uganda

Reforestationbull Produced more than 230700 fruit nut and hardwood trees in our community-led nurseries sequestering over 50600

tons of CO2

bull Managed 20 tree nurseries in five program countries that produce 53 different tree species

bull Supported the planting of 16600 trees in Haitirsquos arid northwest region with long-time partner Ananda Marga Universal Relief Team (AMURT)

bull Led 19 participants on the Ecotour to Honduras during which over 900 trees were planted in several rural communities
