Traveling Exhibition Installation Guidelines
The National Library of Medicine is pleased to provide you with this exceptional traveling exhibition. We hope that the following information will be helpful to you as you prepare for the exhibition’s arrival and installation at your institution.
In this traveling exhibition, Native Voices: Native People’s Concepts of Health and Illness, you will hear the voices of Native Americans, Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiians as they tell their stories and express their ideas about health and illness.
The exhibit consists of six free-standing graphic banners (7’ H x 2-1/2’ W) and six iPad stations. These instructions pertain to both unpacking the exhibition and setting up the six free-standing graphic banners and the iPad stands.
Exhibition Requirements
1) 30 linear feet (minimum)
2) Pallet jack or use of a forklift to transport and move crates
3) 9/16” ratchet for removing crate bolts
2) 2 people for unpacking and set-up
3) Safe, secure, indoor storage for exhibition crates - three crates, eachmeasuring 70”H x 30”W x 48”D and weighing 480 lbs.
4) Avoid display of the exhibit in an area with direct sunlight.
5) Recommend the use latex gloves when installing the exhibition and be surethat your hands are clean if handling the banners and stands without gloves.

The U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM) developed and produced Native Voices: Native Peoples’ Concepts of Health and Illness. The American Library Association (ALA) Public Programs Office, in partnership with NLM, tours the exhibition to America’s libraries.
What You Will Receive

Each crate measures: 70” H x 30” W x 48” D and weighs 480 lbs.
Within each crate you will find:
Plastic wire covers (2) and neoprene floor (3)pads
2 cloth bags, each containing one foot and one rod
2 cloth cylinders, each containing one rolled graphic banner
2 iPad stands with attached headphones
Tool box containing 1 wrench, 1 ratchet screwdriver and bits, plastic ties, touch-up paints, 1 extra power strip, 12 rubber bumper feet for iPad stands, 2 keys for rear access panel on iPad stands, miscellaneous hardware
Plastic containers for additional storage
What To Expect
1) You should expect to spend about two- three hours setting up the exhibitfrom unpacking the crates to completing the installation including the iPadstands.
2) You should have at least two people for set-up.
3) You should be prepared to weigh down the bases of the graphic banners, ifnecessary, to increase stability.
Upon receipt of the Native Voices exhibition, please use the guidelines below for Unpacking/Installation/Deinstallation and
Repacking the exhibition.

Unpacking and Installation Instructions for iPad Stands
1) Using a 9/16” ratchet, carefully remove three bolts from the left side ofthe crate. Put bolts aside.
2) Carefully swing open the crate door to its full open position.

Use ratchet to loosen bolts. Remove bolts and set them aside. Locate 3 bolts.
3) Remove the front iPad stand by sliding the base across the crate floor. Youwill need two people to safely remove the iPad stand.
4) Once the stand has been removed from the case, attach the rubber feetto the underside of each base (rubber feet can be found in the tool box).A black neoprene pad can be used in place of the rubber feet to protecthard floor surfaces and to keep the stand from sliding once in place.

Hand tighten feet into holes on bottom of base at each of the four corners.
(A neoprene pad can be used in place of the rubber feet if preferred.)

5) To remove the second iPad stand, remove the spacer block that isscrewed into the floor of the crate in front of the 2nd stand. SAVE THISBLOCK AND SCREWS. YOU WILL NEED TO PUT THE BLOCK BACK IN PLACEBEFORE CLOSING THE CRATE.
6) Repeat the instructions in step 3 for the removal of the 2nd iPad stand.

7) Using a flat dolly or pallet jack, transport the iPad stand to its displaylocation.
8) Once the iPad is in its display location, move the headphones onto thepeg on the left side of the stand.
To Install the iPad Stand:
9) Using the key found in the tool box, unlock and remove the cover panel on the back of the iPad stand in order to access the electrical power strip. Do not remove the power strip.

10) Unbundle the power strip cord to expose the yellow cord behind it. Thisyellow cord will help feed the iPad connector cord through the iPad stand from the top of the stand to the power strip inside the stand.
The yellow cord is attached at the top of the iPad mount on the front of the iPad stand. PLEASE DO NOT REMOVE THIS YELLOW CORD.

11) Tie the iPad connector cord to the yellow cord, feed it through the holeon the iPad mount, and pass it down into the back of the iPad stand.

12) Plug the iPad power supply into the power strip and then insert the USBconnector from the iPad connector cord into the iPad power supply.

13) Feed the power strip cord through the mouse hole in the cover panel before securing the panel in place.
14) Secure panel closed with key.

15) Power should be distributed as required to each iPad stand. Use wirecovers found in the crate as needed. An extra power strip can be foundin the toolbox, if required.
16) Power should go from each iPad stand to a powerstrip to wall outlet.

1) Remove the black face cover of the enclosure.

1) Remove the 2 black hardware bags and the 2 black cylinders from the crate. Each cloth bag contains one structure (foot and rod) and each black cylinder contains one graphic panel.

Installation/Set-up Instructions
1) Prepare a clean surface on which the graphic can be placed afterunpacking. If using the floor, be sure that there is no debris or objects in thearea where the graphic will be placed.
2) Open the cloth bag by loosening the three velcro tabs.
3) Remove the metal base from the small pocket near the bottom of the bag.

4) Remove the telescoping rod from the opening at the top of the bag. 5) Put the rod and metal base aside for now.
6) Leaving the cloth cylinders in the plastic graphics tube, unzip the cloth cylinder and carefully remove the graphic from the cylinder. You will need to roll the graphic a bit inside the cylinder in order to easily remove it.
c) Then carefully pull the graphic out of the cylinder.
b) Roll the graphic slightly while still inside the cylinder.

7) With two people on either end of the rolled graphic, carefully unroll the graphic. Once it is entirely unrolled, turn the graphic over.

8) With the graphic side down, place it on a clean, flat surface. Hold the metalbase facing up and insert the base into the bottom metal edge centering thebase between the two plastic pieces.

9) With the graphic in an upright position, attach the rod into the top of thegraphic centered between the two plastic pieces.
a) Hold graphic in an uprightposition.

10) With one foot on the metal base, carefully insert the collapsible rod into thebase making sure that the rod is fully inserted. If the rod is not insertedcompletely, the graphic will not stand upright properly.

11) Repeat this procedure for all remaining graphics and structure.
12) If the panels need to be stabilized, we recommend placing a small weightor sandbag on the foot. Other possible methods of weighting include asmall bag of books or catalogues. DO NOT USE DUCT TAPE TO SECURE THEMETAL BASES TO THE FLOOR as this will damage the surface of the metalbase. If tape is your only option, please only use a black gaffers tape.
13) Place the cloth bags back into the large plastic tubes and store the tubes ina cool secure location.
Exhibition Maintenance and Troubleshooting
While the exhibition is on display, please follow these instructions regarding maintenance, troubleshooting, and cleaning.
1) If any problems with the structure or graphic occur, please contact Samantha Oakley, 312-280-5287, [email protected] or Melanie Welch, 312-280, 5054, [email protected].
2) If the banners are not standing up properly, please check the structure to besure that the collapsible rod is inserted completely into the foot. Removethe rod and re-insert it into the foot. Also be sure that the rods are not bentas this will cause the graphics to torque and twist when standing.
3) Please do not use any cleaning solvents on the exhibition graphics orstructure.
If cleaning is necessary, please use a clean, soft cloth slightly dampenedwith a mild soap and water solution. Gently wipe soiled area.DO NOT USE ANY ABRASIVE CLEANING MATERIALS.
Packing Instructions – Exhibition Banners
When de-installing and re-packing the exhibition banners, please follow these instructions:
1) Retrieve the cloth bags and black cylinders from the three crates. You willneed these to re-pack the graphic banners and the display hardware(foot and rod) for each graphic banner.

2) With one person holding the top of panel, the second person places onefoot on the metal base and carefully pulls the rod out of the metal base.

3) With one person holding the top of graphic, the second person carefullyremoves the collapsible rod from the top of the graphic.

4) Laying the graphic down on a clean, flat surface, remove the metalbase from the graphic panel by carefully and slowly lifting the base out ofthe bottom edge of the graphic.

5) Re-pack the base and rod.
b) After collapsing the rod, slide rod into the top of the bag. Secure the bag with the three velcro tabs.

6) With the graphic facing up, carefully and slowly roll the graphic onto itself.
10) Place the rolled graphic into the cloth cylinder. Keep a secure hold on the rolled graphic as it will have a tendency to unroll. Zip the cylinder closed.

Packing Instructions – iPad Stands
When de-installing and re-packing the iPad stands, please follow these instructions:
1) Disconnect the power cords from the wall outlet and the power strips, and
remove wire covers. a. b. c.
2) Re-pack the plastic wire covers and any neoprene pads that were used back into the crate.

3) Remove the rubber feet from each of the iPad stand base by unscrewing the feet from underneath. Pack the rubber feet back into the plastic bag and into the tool box. Rubber feet must be removed prior to packing the iPad stand in the crate.

and then back into the tool kit.
4) Unlock the iPad back panel and remove panel to access the power cord.
5) Pull the power cord through the mouse hole and back inside the iPad stand.
6) Detach the black cord band and bundle the power cord using the black cord band.

7) Unplug the USB iPad connector cord and the iPad power supply from the power strip. Tie the iPad connector cord to the yellow cord.

Tie the iPad connector cord to the yellow cord.
8) Detach the iPad connector cord from the iPad. Using the attached yellow cord, pull the connector cord up through the hole in the iPad mount.

13) Remove the headphones from the left side peg and straddle them across the iPad mount in front of the stand. 14) Using a pallet jack or flat dolley, carefully move the iPad stands to the crate. After removing the spacer block from the crate, carefully slide the iPad stand into the crate with the headphones facing left. Secure the spacer block and proceed to pack the second iPad stand.

15) Place all tools back into the tool box, and replace the tool box into the crate. 16) Once everything is re-packed into the crate, close the crate door and secure with three bolts.

Shipping Instructions
1) The ALA will be in touch with your institution to regarding shipping.
2) The exhibition should be packed and ready for pick-up by the date specified by ALA.
3) Be sure that all components, tools and accessories have been packed inside the crate.
