Start looking for insurance early to ensure that you have adequate time to find the right policy.

Many insurance policies have age limits, commonly restricted to travellers under 70 or 75 years of age. However, there are number of insurers that specialise in Seniors Insurance including:

• Australian Senior Travel Insurance• 1 Cover• Cover More Travel Insurance

Pre-Existing Medical Conditions – Most travel insurance policies will exclude certain pre-existing medical conditions (some may exclude all). It is extremely important if you have a pre-existing medical condition to find out whether it is covered or able to be covered. Read the Policy Disclosure Statement (PDS) which will specify what they do and don't cover.

A pre-existing medical condition is defined by most insurers as being an illness or injury that you were seeking or receiving treatment for or had symptoms of in the past 6-24 months.

Many insurers exclude certain countries from coverage, which is generally due to high conflict areas or based on travel advice by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Review the PDS to ensure that there is no exclusion relating to the countries/regions you are travelling to.

Read the PDS to ensure that the features and benefits of the policy meet your expectations. Policy limits vary between insurers, for example, some insurers may limit luggage to $5,000, whereas an alternate insurer may have higher benefits of $10,000. Generally no two policies provide the same cover. Review the level of the features and benefits as well as the policy exclusions to ensure you are aware of the policy limits and there are no surprises in the event of a claim

Travel insurance companies will often have a 24-hour Hotline Number to assist travellers in the event of an emergency. Make sure you take your travel insurance policy information and contact numbers with you so you can easily contact your insurer from overseas. It is also a good idea to consider leaving details of your travel insurance policy with family or friends back home.

• If you get sick overseas or are involved in a medical emergency, you should contact your travel insurance provider as soon as possible.

• If goods are stolen, generally most insurers will require a police report from the country of origin. Check the PDS to see whether required.
