    1. GENERAL INFORMATION FOR ALL PARTICIPANTS

This section contains a lot of valuable information, so please read it carefully!

TRAVEL ARRANGEMENT If you are receiving funding from Japanese Government (via Hiroshima University), your flights to Japan should have already been taken care of. Please keep all boarding passes for your flights as Hiroshima University will collect them upon arrival for their accounting purposes. If you are being funded by your home university, you should be in touch with the INU contact at your university for information on how the travel arrangements should be made. The directions (from the airport to the hotel, hotel to the university, etc.) are all included in this document. If you have any other travel plans while in Japan, the following website may help you in the planning process: http://www.japantravelinfo.com/top/index.php. You should be aware that Obon (Bon Festival) is taking place in Japan in from August 12-16 and travel around this time will be a little more difficult than usual and accommodation may be harder to find.

VISA You should also note that you must undertake to find out about any visa requirements for travel to Japan from your own country. You will be expected to pay for any visas required yourself. If you need to have a letter of invitation or any necessary documents from Hiroshima University in order to obtain a visa, please let the INU contact at your university know and we will arrange this for you.

TRAVEL INSURANCE Everybody traveling from overseas must have an international travel and health insurance. Before you take out your own travel insurance policy, we would recommend that you speak with your INU contact at your university because some universities may be able to provide travel insurance for staff and students if the trip is classed as study or work. It may be that this program will fit into the criteria and you can be covered at no additional cost to yourself.

INU WEBSITE AND COMMUNICATION WITH FELLOW STUDENTS The INU Website [www.inunis.net] will be your source for all practical information relating to preparations for the program. In addition, there are a number of students who will be travelling to the Seminar and Summer Schools from INU universities. If you would prefer to travel to Japan with someone from your university, please speak with your INU contact as you may find that there are other students and/or staff who will be travelling to Hiroshima for the seminar. Also, join the INU Facebook [www.facebook.com/INUnetwork] that is a place for you to communicate with each other, before and after the Seminar.

ACCOMMODATION Hiroshima University will make accommodation reservations as described below. Depending on the program you are attending, you will be accommodated at different hotels. If you are funded by your university of self-funded, please make the payment to the hotel at the time of check-in. Payment for students funded by Japanese Government will be made by Hiroshima University. The accommodation is only booked during the Seminar and two Masters Summer Schools. BRING YOUR OWN CUPS/MUGS/BOTTLES There will be coffee and soft drinks served during the class hours on campus. Although we will be providing paper cups, we ask our participants to bring your own cups/ mugs/ bottles to be environmentally friendly. Alternatively, you could buy one in Japan and bring it home as a souvenir!

MONEY You are strongly advised to exchange some money to Japanese Yen on or before your arrival in Japan, so that you have some money immediately available in case of emergencies. Generally, while you are in the country you will get better exchange rates when withdrawing money from the local ATMs.

PREPARATORY WORK There will be some preparatory work that you will be expected to undertake before the programs commence. This will be in the form of documentation to read and/or assignments to complete. Please refer to the Course Guide or the Seminar Guide of your relevant program which are uploaded on the INU website. You will need to ensure that you print all the preparatory materials before the programs commence in August and bring them with you. There will be NO hard copies of readings or other documents distributed.

CLOTHING The weather can get extremely warm in Hiroshima in August. You can expect temperatures of around 35 degrees Celsius (around 100 F), with high humidity. Please ensure that you come prepared, e.g. bring sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and appropriate clothing. At the same time, as it can get cold inside the buildings and trains with the air conditioner, it is recommended to bring some layers of clothing for adjustment. We often receive questions about dress code for the Peace Memorial Ceremony on August 6: there is NO specific dress code for the peace ceremony but again, please be prepared for the heat as you might be sitting in the sun for an hour or so. On August 10, the last day of the INU Student Seminar/Summer School on Global Citizenship and Peace, students are expected to wear clothing that is a little more formal than usual, to bring a more authentic atmosphere to the UN General Assembly Role Play.

Optional Event 1: SPECIAL LECTURE BY CTBTO EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR On August 6, Ambassador Tibor Tth, the Executive Secretary of CTBTO (Preparatory commission for the comprehensive nuclear-test-ban treaty organization), will be attending the Peace Memorial Ceremony and has kindly offered to give a lecture for Hiroshima University after the Ceremony. Venue: Hiroshima Chamber of Commerce and Industry Building Date & Time: August 6, 10:00-11:00 am

Capacity: Due to limited space of the room, we must limit the number of audience to 90 persons. If you wish to attend the lecture, please be seated by 9:40am.

There are a total of 170 trees registered by Hiroshima City as Hibakujumoku (the tree that survived the atomic bomb). We hope participants will be able to discuss the interconnections between nature and peace, and under the shade of the trees explore ideas on how to protect the legacy of these precious survivors.

    4. INFORMATION ABOUT HIGASHI-HIROSHIMA CITY

Higashi-Hiroshima () is a relatively small city, with an estimated population of 183,834 by 2011 and a total area of 635.32 km. This city is located in the eastern part of Hiroshima Prefecture and it was founded on April 20th, 1974 from the union of four towns: Saij, Hachihonmatsu, Shiwa, and Takaya in Kamo District. Since old times, Higashi-Hiroshima has been famous for brewing sake and the Sakagura-dori (sake brewery avenue) is well-known among Japanese people. This avenue is characterized by its "white walls", "black and white check walls" and "red brick chimneys". In addition, every year there is a sake matsuri" (sake festival) held in October, where you can taste many kinds of sake from all over Japan. In the town of Saij, where Hiroshima University is located, the main street called Boulevard runs from Saij station all the way to Hiroshima University. Along the Boulevard Street there are several bus stops, where you can catch the bus to the university. In addition, there are some Italian, Indian, Japanese, and family restaurants, where you can enjoy trying new tastes.

    DINING/RESTAURANTS

There are a variety of restaurants located near Hiroshima University (refer to Saij Shitami Map), near JR Saij Station and along Boulevard Street (refer to Downtown Saijo Map).

    EXPLANATION OF JAPANESE DISHES

Regarding the map above, the symbols, if repeated, mean that you can find the same type of restaurant/store there as well. Fast food is only limited to McDonalds. However, Okonomiyaki, one of the most famous dishes in Hiroshima, is also called the Japanese Pizza the name literally means all of

your favourite things grilled together and its cooked over an iron grill, much like the grill they use to make hamburgers at fast food joints. Ingredients include noodles, eggs, pork, cabbage, and a smoky sauce. Nevertheless, the okonomiyaki restaurants each have their own unique flavour. In addition, there are Japanese pubs called Izakaya, where they serve a variety of drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) as well as many little dishes to share. Moreover, convenience stores carry almost anything imaginable: drinks, bentou (Japanese lunchboxes), noodles, onigiri (rice-ball), desserts, snacks, creams, toothbrushes, etc. Theyre a great place to get a cheap meal. Gyudon (beef bowls) are like Japanese fast food theyre cheap, the service is quick, and they fill you up. The basic menu item is a bowl of rice topped with thinly sliced beef and onions simmered in a soup based in soy sauce. They also have countless variations on this

Therefore, there are some basic Japanese expressions that you can use when interacting with Japanese people:
