This class embarks in the glorious foundation of the Spanish language for those who have never taken a class, or took one too long ago to even remember anything. We will begin by learning the Spanish alphabet, the phonetic rules of the letters (what they sound like), accented syllables in words, and basic vocabulary. Towards the end of the semester, we will work on basic greetings, expressions and how to ask what/when/where/who/how questions. We also make time to discuss some cultural and social aspects of Spanish-speaking countries. * The last 30 minutes of this class (6:40-7:10) will overlap with the more advanced class, “Conversational Spanish”, to give students an opportu-nity to be exposed to (and participate if so inclined) in spoken Spanish conversation and give students an opportunity to be challenged by the questions and trial & errors of their less knowledgeable peers.

Participants are also expected to have a basic level of Spanish vocabulary and expressions already learned so we can build on that knowledge by incorporating new vocabulary, verbs and practicing the 3 basic verb tenses. The focus of this class will be spoken (conversation), not written Spanish. The instructor will supply reading materials in selective topics beforehand in preparation for subsequent classes. Participants should anticipate engaging in proactive debate and conversation on weekly topics and discussions on cultural and social aspects of Spanish-speaking countries will be part of the experience.

In partnership with the University of Colorado, Anschutz Medical Campus, we are proud to host the Mini Med School this year. Each class features a different medical doctor, who will walk us through a specific topic. The courses and are delivered online to the classroom, but that doesn’t limit the interaction. Dennis J. Boyle, MD is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado, School of Medicine, Division of Rheumatology. He presently the associate director of the University of Colorado’s Foundations of Doctoring Program, teaching 320 medical students about physician/patient communication each year. Boyle is author of, “Ten tips for prescribing opioids,” published in The Rheumatologist, December 2014.

Jeffrey Wallace, MD, MPH is Professor and Director of Clinical Geriatrics at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver. He attended Medical School at the University of Michigan, did his medical residency at the University of Colorado, and completed his fellowship in Geriatric Medicine at the University of Washington. Dr Wallace has practiced clinical geriatrics in academic settings for over 20 years. Matthew Wynia, MD, MPH, FACP is the Director of the Center for Bioeth-ics and Humanities at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Cam-pus. His work has been published in JAMA, the New England Journal of Medicine, Annals of Internal Medicine, Health Affairs, and other leading medical and ethics journals, and he is a contributing editor for the American Journal of Bioethics.

Nichole G. Zehnder, MD, is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine where she is a hospitalist, clinician educator, and physician leader. She serves as Director of the Hospitalized Adult Care Clerkship and the Associate Director for the Integrated Clinicians Course. Dr. Zehnder has received multiple awards and honors including the Elaine Cleary Award for Excellence in Teaching and Education in the Division of General Internal Medicine. She regularly facilitates workshops on a variety of education and leadership topics across wide ranging disciplines to inspire the next generation of medical educators.

What Science Tells Us About How to Lose Weight & Keep It Off Forever, James Hill, MDWednesday, September 6th, 7:00pm to 8:30pm

Dr. James Hill is Director of the Center for Human Nutrition at the Uni-versity of Colorado Health Sciences Center is one of America ‘s foremost experts in weight management. He has spent over 25 years researching the causes of weight gain, adiposity, and obesity and how to prevent or treat these problems. He has published over 300 scientific articles and lectures widely about weight management. He is well known as a co-founder of the National Weight Control Registry, which follows over 6000 people who have lost weight and kept it off permanently. He is also co-founder of America On the Move, an initiative to make small lifestyle changes to help improve health and manage weight. Dr. Hill has spent the past few years translating the science of weight management into simple programs that work in the community. He developed The Colo-rado Weigh, formal behavior weight management programs involving weekly group meetings.

Matthew West, MD is a recipient of the Peak Performance Award, Rocky Mountain Hospital Medicine Symposium, and the University of Colorado Hospital Pioneer Award. Dr. West chairs Rocky Mountain MS Center’s Data Safety and Review Board and serves on editorial board of “The Neurohospitalist”. Dr. Kristin Furfari graduated from the University of Colorado School of Medicine at Denver in 2004. She works in Aurora, CO and specializes in Family Medicine and Hospitalist. Patrick Kneeland, MD is the Medical Director for Patient and Provider Experience at the University of Colorado Hospital and Director of Safety and Patient Experience for the University of Colorado Hospital Medicine Group. Dr. Kneeland is a graduate of the University of Colorado School of Medicine and a founding faculty mem-ber of the Institute for Healthcare Quality, Safety, and Efficiency (IHQSE) where he facilitates the improvement of patient safety, patient experi-ence, and the development of optimal professional work environments.

This course is for those that need to learn the fundamentals of Basic Life Support, so that they are able to take the appropriate course of action should an emergency arise.

How to Register:

1. Fill out a non-credit registration form (can be found on our website or stop by the campus) out completely. Course information can be found in the course schedule. If you do not know your S number feel free to leave it blank.2. Return the form by emailing it to Desiree Moore, faxing it to 970-824-1134, or dropping it off at the CNCC Craig Campus or the Bell Tower.3.
