DESCRIPTION

The road transport sector accounts for 80% of the total transport in the country with 1.3 million vehicles on the road, 60% of which are in Nairobi. The Ministry of Transport has launched an initiative to improve efficiency and effectiveness in enforcement, regulation and compliance to traffic rules; efficient system for a holistic transport environment and detect and eliminate fraud in the sector.

The road transport sector accounts for

80% of the total transport in the country

About 1.3 M total No. of vehicles, 60% in Nairobi

One of the biggest employers in the country- majority being youth

Very high fatalities rates ranking 3rd after Malaria and HIV/AIDS (85% caused by human error)

Congestion in major cities partly due to flaunting traffic rules

Forged documents and licenses (driving licenses, Insurance, log books etc)

Inadequate enforcement of traffic rules leading to bribery, illegal cartels

Lenient fines and penalties sometimes leading to impunity

Manual system of record keeping making retrieval and sharing difficult

Improve efficiency and effectiveness in enforcement, regulation and compliance to traffic rules.

Efficient system that can manage the many components of a holistic transport environment and thus contribute positively to economic growth

Fraud detection and elimination to ensure order and sanity on the roads

Sensitization of all stakeholders on the need and benefits of sharing data

Creation of common hard ware and communication infrastructure to host manage and relay information in real time to stakeholders

Development of a scalable database on the transport sector that spreads across the heterogeneous stakeholders

Use of available technologies such as satellite, mobile, internet

Automation of some of enforcement procedures and Involvement of the public
