Sunrise over Lake Superior

The cast is set, rehearsals are cookin’ and

the convent is hummin’ as Lake Superior Community Theatre play

director Scott Thun and his cast of ten spirited women prepare for the LSCT spring musical play production Nunsense by Danny Goggin.

For the first time LSCT will present the same play in both communities April 16, 17, 18 & 19 at William Kelley High School in Silver Bay and April 24, 25 & 26 at Two Harbors High School. The 13-year Silver Bay based theatre company has been evolving to present its shows in both communities starting with the Stars On The Shore talent showcase and the Andrew Gangestad-Nathan Herfindahl Homecoming concerts in 2011 plus the musical Fiddler on the Roof last spring in Two Harbors.

Nunsense, a family show, opened Off-Broadway on December 12, 1985, running for 3,672 performances and becoming the second-longest-running Off-Broadway show in history.

The whacky story revolves around six surviving traditional Catholic Little Sisters of Hoboken who earlier discover their cook, Sister Julia-Child of God,

accidentally killed fifty-two residents of the convent with her tainted vichyssoise; a thick soup made of puréed leeks, onions, potatoes, cream, and chicken stock traditionally served cold. The sisters bury 48 of the nuns but run out of money to bury the remaining (frozen) four. With the deceased nuns on ice in the deep freeze, the six decide to stage a variety show in the Mount Saint Helen’s School auditorium (Scott Thun’s delightfully creative setting) to raise the necessary money. Participating in the project are Mother Superior Mary Regina (Annie Andrus), a former circus performer who cannot resist the spotlight; her competitive but dignified rival, second-in-command Sister Mary Hubert (Terri Frericks-Blood); Sister Robert Anne (Rachel Drew-Thun), a streetwise nun from Brooklyn; Sister Mary Leo (Susan Michels – finally!), a novice who is determined to be the world’s first ballerina nun; wacky, childlike Sister Mary Amnesia (Katie Fritz), who lost her memory when a crucifix fell on her head and pianist Sister Mary Betondeef (Mary Carroll). The entertainment they present includes solo star turns, silly dance routines and an audience quiz. Rounding out the cast are the frozen four: Sister Carrie Greer, Sister Diane Helander, Sister Maria Riederer and Sister Deborah Russell.

The Lake Superior School District is in the process of registering for next school year at the William Kelley High School and Two Harbors High Schools. The winter sports are wrapping up and the spring sports getting ready for their seasons to begin. The Robotics Teams are very active with the big competition on February 27th located in Duluth. DECA, Music Listening, and FFA have all been prepping and competing as well. Music concerts will be on the schedule for spring. Please come out and see all the great activities our students take part in throughout the district. Continue to view our website to keep updated.

School Board:The school district received word in December from the Minnesota Department of Education that the district was eligible to re-apply for the 4-day school week. The school board met with community members to discuss the 4-day school week and voted to re-apply for the four day school week calendar. This application will be to continue on the four day week schedule for an additional three years. The application is due to MDE on April 15, 2015. We will hear our status from the state by the end of the school year.

The school district wants and needs your input! The Lake Superior School District is conducting a survey assessing the 4-day school week. The survey link is available on the district web site until March 30, 2015.

.

District Vision:The Lake Superior School District continues to work on providing a welcoming & safe environment for students, staff, & community. The district administration continues to meet with Law Enforcement agencies and staff to ensure our schools are safe. The buildings will all have key card access by the end of the school year. The entrances are being equipped with a buzzer system for entry into the buildings. Cameras are being added to the existing systems in place to increase coverage at our buildings. Fencing has been updated at the Minnehaha.

The district continues to work with our students in helping them in the area of career and college readiness. Our students have taken career exploration assessments this year to help in determining direction for their future. In November, students in the 10th grade took the Plan and 8th graders took the Explore. These two assessments provided data on what our students are interested in for future careers. Also, this April all of our 11th graders will be taking the ACT, a college entrance exam. The ACT results indicate areas that our students are strong in and areas that are in need of skill development. The ACT score is used by the four year colleges as part of the college application process.

We have also started to look at the 2015-2016 school year budget process. We will continue to strive to keep any reductions away from the classroom as much as possible. The additional funding from the state will be beneficial in our budgeting process this coming school year. We will also be planning on returning to the five day school week, since there are no guarantees that our re-application will be accepted.

If you have any questions, suggestions or concerns please contact the Lake Superior School district office at 218-834-8201 or by email at [email protected]. Have a Great Spring!

KINDERGARTEN TRANSITION NIGHTS ARE OPTIONAL EVENTS

TWO HARBORS ALL ABOARD FOR KINDERGARTEN STATIONTuesday, March 10, 6:00 – 7:00 PMMinnehaha Library

If your child’s preschool years are coming to an end, your thoughts are possibly turning toward kindergarten. But is your child ready to move on to kindergarten? What skills do kindergarten teachers expect their new students to have? To answer those questions (and ease your mind), we have planned a fun and informative evening for our incoming kindergarteners and their parents.

This is NOT kindergarten roundup or registration, but a time to meet the teachers and get more familiar with the routines and activities in kindergarten.

There is no charge, but registration is preferred. See Class Registration for more information.

KINDERGARTEN ORIENTATION/REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED• All students must have had the state required

early childhood screening before entering kindergarten. If your child has not had this screening, contact Community Education: Two Harbors, 834-8201, ext. 8230 or Silver Bay, 226-4437, ext. 8158.

• Parents of children who will attend kindergarten this fall should attend.

• Students entering kindergarten next fall must be five years old before September 1, 2015.

• Birth certificate and immunization records will be requested by the school at registration time.

Please note: Children who have attended preschool programs such as Early Childhood Special Education, Head Start and Community Education Preschool are not automatically enrolled in kindergarten.

Silver Bay Kindergarten Registration will take place Tuesday, March 24th 6:00 p.m. at William Kelley School in the Kindergarten room (105). This is for parents only, as students will be able to visit the classroom at a later date. Child care will not be provided.

Two Harbors Kindergarten Registration will take place in the Minnehaha School on Thursday, May 7, 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. Students and parents will be able to visit the classrooms. If you have questions, please call Jenny at 834-8221, ext. 8401.

HOME-SCHOOL STUDENTSHome-school students must register with the Lake Superior School District and have their immunizations on file. To receive the paperwork necessary to register your children, please call the District Office at 834-8201, ext. 8216.

SCHOOL BOARD MEETINGSSchool board meetings are regularly scheduled for the second Tuesday of each month at 6:00 PM. NOTES FROM THE NURSES’ OFFICEImmunization RemindersFor entry into school, including preschool, the state of Minnesota requires that parents provide proof of vaccination, medical exemption signed by a medical provider or a notarized conscientious objection signed by the parent/ guardian. Please provide the record of vaccinations to the nurse at your school.

Information regarding vaccinations needed for school can be found at: http://www.health.state.mn.us/divs/idepc/immunize/schedules.html

Springtime is a great time to schedule a Well Child Check-up, Prekindergarten physical, immunization update and/or Sports Physical with your child’s physician/health care provider. Doing this now will prevent the rush that ‘Back to School’ time brings when September rolls around!

Sports physical forms may be picked up at your student’s school, or go to the MN State High School League Website to download forms. http://www.mshsl.org/mshsl/publications/code/forms/PhysicalExam.pdf?ne=4

Healthy Kids are Better Learners! Be an early-bird, and make a Well-Child appointment for your student soon!

GET OUTSIDE AND STAY HEALTHY!While enjoying the great outdoors please keep yourselves safe and healthy! The following tidbits are friendly reminders that we hope you find helpful.

SKIN HEALTHRemember to keep your skin protected this summer. Skin cancer rates are on the rise. You can minimize your chances of developing skin cancer by using sunscreen and covering up while out in the sun. Slip on a shirt, slap on a hat and slop on sunscreen!

TICK SENSETicks are everywhere and there seem to be more of them every year! To protect yourself from Lymes and other ‘tick borne’ diseases, we recommend that you wear long pants

tucked into socks, long sleeves and do a thorough ‘tick check’ after being outside. The following link from the Minnesota Department of Health offers excellent information about avoiding ticks as well as a video about how to safely remove them! http://www.health.state.mn.us/divs/idepc/dtopics/tickborne/prevention.htmlHere’s to a safe and Happy Summer for all!Sara Preston RN LSN School Nurse, Lake Superior School District

UPCOMING EVENTS:SENIOR NEWSFAFSA – Forms for Financial AidStudents planning to attend any two or four year institution next fall should fill out a FAFSA form as soon as possible. This federal form is used by all institutions to determine and award financial aid, including grants, scholarships and loans. It is highly recommended that the FAFSA form be completed online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Be careful to go to this site and not .com. Filling out the FAFSA is free; if you are asked to pay a fee, you are on the wrong Website. Worksheets to assist in filling out the FAFSA are also online.

SCHOLARSHIPSStudents should continue to watch the daily announcements for scholarship information and deadlines. There will be many deadlines in the coming months and it is important that students follow instructions on filling out applications and returning forms. The daily announcements are available through homeroom teachers and are also posted outside the main office each day.

JUNIOR NEWSThe ACT test is coming up in April!!! This year all juniors will take the ACT as part of state testing. A letter explaining this requirement went out earlier this year. Students are provided this opportunity free of charge and it will happen during the school day on Tuesday, April 28th. Prep materials are available in the Guidance Office and online at www.actstudent.org. The ACT is used by four year colleges and universities as part of the admissions process. It is also used by two year schools for placement purposes.

SPORTS AND EXERCISEGROUP CIRCUIT TRAININGCircuit Training is one of the most effective ways one can stay in shape and lose weight . It tackles every major muscle group by challenging endurance and strength . A single session of CT of one hour can burn anywhere from 400-600 kcals, depending on body type and effort put into the class . This class will be challenging at first, but as you continuously attend, you’ll notice you’ll be able to perform the exercises properly and more efficiently . I will also help modify movements if they are too challenging, and please don’t hesitate to take short breaks when needed . We will be getting on the floor, so bringing a mat of some sort may be a good idea, but is not required . Just know that putting something under your knees or lying on something will aid in comfortably executing the movement . There will be jumping around, so if you have any knee problems, back, neck, etc . please let me know so we can work on modifying the exercise . Weights are recommended, but not required . We will be doing lots of weighted activity, multiple reps, so please bring a weight that you can handle . Water bottles and clean athletic shoes (or comparable) are required . DRIVER EDUCATION PARENT MEETINGThe Minnesota State legislature passed a new law – the Graduated Driver License (GDL) that changes the requirement for students and families in regards to Driver’s Education . We have always highly encouraged parents to attend our “parent night” during the classroom portion of DE . With the new law, there is a more stringent parent class time commitment (90 minutes) and the curriculum is specified . Certificates are awarded for completion of the Parent Session . Attendance for a parent is optional, but if a parent does not attend, the newly required “log of supervised driving time” that you and your teen have to document will vary in time requirements . All teens will need to submit a log when they take their driver’s test, however, fewer hours of verified driving are required for teens who have had a parent who has attended the parent session . Students are not required to attend this meeting; it does not count towards their required 30 hours of class time . There is no additional cost for the parent meeting, but registration is required . DRIVER EDUCATION PARENT MEETING - SUMMER CLASSThe Minnesota State legislature passed a new law – the Graduated Driver License (GDL) that changes the requirement for students and families in regards to Driver’s Education .
