Our Mission

Our Heritage

Founded in 1784 to provide surgical training for the island of Ireland, a role that continues to this day, RCSI is a unique academic and research institution. Ranked in the Top 2% by the Times Higher World University Rankings, RCSI is Ireland’s largest medical school and with campuses in Dublin, Bahrain and Malaysia, the only medical school in the World that delivers its medical programme in three different Countries.

Our Approach

With a single focus on Healthcare, RCSI is a knowledge hub that brings together inspiring medical educators, experienced clinicians and groundbreaking researchers. RCSI is more than a third-level institution; it is a unique learning environment at the leading edge of healthcare education, research and innovation; an organization that, through its education and research activities is shaping the healthcare delivery models of the future.

Student Experience

The medical programme is delivered by academic staff that are either clinically or research active. The use of clinically active staff continues the RCSI tradition of providing significant components of the programme in the clinical environment (bedside teaching). Our use of research active staff ensures that students are taught by academics at the leading edge of scientific discovery. The early years of the course provides students with a solid understanding of biomedical sciences upon which they build advanced clinical and communication skills to allow them to successfully diagnose and manage the wide variety of patients they will care for in their chosen medical speciality.

• Early patient contact from year 1 of the programme• Enhanced clinical skills training using Europe’s largest and most modern

clinical simulation facility • Undertaking clinical teaching in several of Ireland’s leading hospitals• International clinical and research elective opportunities

• The provision of supports in preparing for professional licensing examinations, including the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE)

• An extensive ‘sub-internship programme’ which provides students with the opportunity to prepare for life as a junior hospital doctor

Maximising Student Potential

Our ambition is for every RCSI student to reach his or her maximum potential. We encourage students to take advantage of the opportunities available at RCSI to build solid resumes prior to graduation.

These opportunities include the RCSI Research Summer School, where students undertake laboratory or clinical research, offered during July and August. Students have the opportunity to work as part of a research group, present at scientific meetings and publish their findings in scientific publications.

Overseas clinical elective opportunities are also provided through our Careers Office and Global Alumni network. Clinical electives provide the opportunity to obtain practical work experience which assists students as they consider the branch of medicine they will pursue after graduation.

These and many other opportunities compliment the core medical curriculum and allow graduates to quickly apply their knowledge in the clinical setting as they begin their medical careers as junior hospital doctors.

A unique student community

RCSI has a student community that is unique for two reasons. Firstly, Ireland is a relatively small Country and the Government regulates the number of Irish students that are admitted to each of the Irish medical schools. This is to ensure that the Country only supplies sufficient doctors to meet Ireland’s medical manpower needs. In the case of RCSI, the government allows 54 Irish/EU students to be admitted each year. Our capacity however is larger and the additional 220 seats are offered to international students from over 50 Countries; this creates the first feature of our student community, cultural diversity. Secondly, as a university with a focus on health sciences, all undergraduate and postgraduate students are studying a health related discipline. This mixture of international diversity and a singular focus on healthcare creates a unique environment in which to study medicine.

• A singular focus on health sciences

• At the forefront of medical education since 1784

• Undergraduate schools of Medicine, Pharmacy and Physiotherapy

• An international student community representing over 50 Countries

• The largest and most modern clinical simulation facility of its kind in Europe

• 15,500 global alumni providing unrivalled access to international clinical electives

Ireland as the location of choice for international education

Ireland is a member of the European Union and soon to become the only English speaking country to remain in the EU. Dublin has an enviable reputation for producing high calibre university graduates which is evidenced by 9 of the top 10 technology and software companies in the world basing their European headquarters in Ireland. On the healthcare side, Ireland is the third largest producer of pharmaceutical products in the world after the USA and France.

Dublin is an accessible city, with direct flights from numerous cities in North America, the Middle East and Europe. It is a 1 hour flight from London, a gateway to Europe and is consistently voted by international students as one of the safest and most welcoming cities in the world. The College itself is based in the heart of Dublin city centre, beside its premier shopping area on Grafton Street and directly opposite the beautiful park of St Stephen’s Green.

Student Life

At RCSI, students find themselves in a community of Irish and international students where lifelong bonds are quickly formed as they embrace new life experiences in a culturally immersive environment. Students have over 70 clubs and societies to choose from, which reflects the range of interests among our international student community.

Many first year students also choose to live on campus which enables them to quickly adapt to life in Dublin.
