Example: Orion plans to build a circular pool with either a 30-foot (ft) radius or a 15-ft radius, as shown below.

The cost of a cement path around the edge of the pool depends on the circumference of the pool. If the materials for the path around the 30-ft radius pool cost $100, what would be the cost of the materials for the path around the 15-ft radius pool? First, how many times bigger is the circumference of the big pool compared to the circumference of the small one?

A. Twice as big

B. Four times as big

C. Eight times as big

D. 30 times as big

Click on the star that best matches your answer.

Great Job!Remember, circumference is different than area and volume.

A. $85

B. $75

C. $50

D. $25

Click on the star that best matches your answer.

Fantastic!Remember the 15 foot radius pool’s circumference is half that of the 30 foot radius pool

Example 2: Each dimension of a rectangle is reduced by a factor of 1/3. The area of the rectangle is multiplied by which factor?

A. 1/3

B. 1/6

C. 1/9

D. 1/12

Click on the star that best matches your answer.

Smarty! Remember, area is the factor squared.
