Schwäbisch Hall, once a Free Imperial City of the Holy RomanEmpire, owes its economic development to a salt mine, located within the confines of the town, and the royal mintestablished by the Holy Roman Emperor here in the 12thcentury. With its well preservered ensemble of half-timberedhouses and narrow lanes, the small town is an impressiveexample of a medivial townscape. The Marktplatz is one of themost beautiful squares in Germany and combines thearchitectural styles of several epochs, ranging from theRomanesque-Gothic church of St. Michael to the Baroquetown hall. Modern architecture is present by the gallery of theGerman entrepreneur and art collector Reinhold Würth.
