ifitislowoninventorybecauseOCCtonsareavailableat

currentpriceswithoutanyproblemwhatsoever.Acouple

oflargeintegratedboardmakersarelookingatthisperiod

asawonderfultimetofilltheirwarehousestothegillswith

OCC.TheyalsohaveacquiredsomeoutsidewarehousespaceandstuffedthatwithOCCtoo.Thispracticeismost

prevalentintheSoutheast,wherepricesdidsoften.

Anumberofboardmillsthroughoutthecountrytooka

fewdaysoffduringtheholidayperiod,throwingmoretons

outontheopenmarket.

Everyoneseemstohavecomeoutoftheholidayswith

decentinventoriesofallpapergrades,emailsamajor

recoveredpaperbuyer.Nopaniccallsfromanydomestic

mill.Thingsarejustcalm.

ANortheastboardmillrecoveredpaperbuyersaysshe

hasbeenbombardedwithrequestsfromsupplierstotakeextraloadsofOCC,DLKandmixedpaper.

Iamshockedattheamountoftonsthathavebeenof-

fered,sheemails.Usuallyweseeanimmediatedeclinein

OCCasofJan.1butthathasnothappened.

IntheSoutheast,lastmonthsawanincreaseinOCC

generation(nosurprise,whatwithretailsalesupabitfrom

ayearagoatthistime)andsomewhatslowerkraftlinerboard

productionrates.

TheheatisoffOCC,saysasupplierintheSoutheast.

ThepremiumsaregonebutOCCisnothardtosell.

ActivityinChinaisalsoveryquietrightnow.RecoveredpaperbuyersforthisregionpurchasedalotoftonsinNo-

vemberandDecembersotheyhavegoodinventoriesattheir

millsandonthewater.Therewillbequiteabitofproduction

downtimebeingtakenduringtheChineseNewYear,which

startsonFeb.3.SupplierstoChinaarejustnowstartingto

takeordersforJanuarybutnoonehasanyurgency.While

balanceistheclearthemerightnow,veteranboardmillbuy-

ersseethespringasapotentiallyvolatiletimeforrecovered

paperprices.Why?Chinasvoraciousneedsthisyear.

Withdomesticmillsexpectingtohaveordersatleast

consistentwith2010orbetter,thishasOCCbuyersworriedthattherewillbearealscrambleforOCCandmixedpaper

startingaroundMarch2011,emailsarecoveredpapersup-

plierintheSoutheast.MA
