    Introduction

    Central Silk Board, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India is endowed with the overallresponsibility of developing the silk industry in the country. Research and Training are the key functions of

    its major Research Institutes and Regional Stations. Besides, they conduct various training programmes forthe development of human resources. These programmes are well designed to meet the specific needs of

    each sector to provide latest information on technologies and the skills to extension personnel and

    stakeholders for ensuring effective transfer.

    These institutes possess the required facilities for research & training programmes supported by well

    equipped laboratories, libraries, class rooms, hostels and qualified faculty. The training courses cover all the

    topics from cultivation of silkworm food plants, raising of cocoon crops to production and processing of

    yarn and fabric - both mulberry and non-mulberry (Vanya) sericulture. They include regular Post-Graduate

    Diploma Course (Mulberry and Non-Mulberry) down to Capsule Courses and other Development Training

    Programmes under different schemes. Tailor-made Training Courses on specific subjects are also organized

    on specific requests from States. Besides, the Training Division of the CSB Headquarters organizes certain

    Specialized Training Programmes for the benefit of various stakeholders. Some of the training programmes

    are conducted at their Regional Research Stations too.

    The Training Programmes at CSR&TI, Mysore and Training Division of CSB Headquarters confer

    to ISO 9001:2008 standards. The course of Post-Graduate Diploma in Sericulture (Mulberry) at CSR&TI,Berhampore (West Bengal) is affiliated to the University of Kalyani, Kalyani, West Bengal. And, the course

    of Post-Graduate Diploma in Sericulture (Non-Mulberry) at CTR&TI, Ranchi (Jharkhand) is affiliated to

    Ranchi University, Ranchi, Jharkhand. The details of the Training Programmes conducted by various

    About the Course:

    The course of Certificate in Sericulture is a coordinated programme of Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi

    and Central Silk Board, Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India aiming to impart scientific knowledge and entrepreneurial skills to the

    farmers and technicians involved in mulberry cultivation and cocoon production through silkworm rearing in a Open DistanceLearning Mode. This course is open to both male and female candidates. The teaching-learning process is through self-

    instructional learning materials, based on the academic credit system. Self-study, assistance and service are aided by facilities

    provided at the IGNOU Programme Study Centres established at different parts of the country. Since Sericulture is wide spreadthroughout the country, efforts have been taken for translating the course into 9 (Nine) regional languages for facilitating all theregions of the country. Presently the course is available in English and Hindi. The said course shall also be available in Bengali

    and Malayalam shortly. As of now, 500 candidates have registered under the course from different parts of the country since from

    inception fulfilling beyond the target. More Study Centres are in the offing for UP, Bihar, Delhi and North Central Region.
