Features andBenefits

Coaxial CoilThe unit’s internal heat exchangingwater coil is engineered for maximumheat transfer.

The copper or cupro-nickel seamlesstubing is a tube within a tube design. The inner-tube contains a deep flutedcurve to enhance heat transfer andminimize fouling and scaling. Coaxialheat exchangers are more tolerant tofreeze rupture.

Compressor and Coaxial Coil IsolationVibration isolation for the compressorand coaxial water coil is accomplishedby increasing the rigidity and stiffness atthe base for the compressor, and at theback of the chassis for the coaxial watercoil. This platform includes doubleisolation to the compressor and singleisolation to the coaxial water coil.

Water ConnectionsThe water-in/water-out connections tothe coaxial water coil are located in theright-hand or left hand end pocket(option specific).

Figure FB-10 – Coaxial Water CoilFigure FB-11 – Water Connection

Expansion ValveAll Trane water-source systems includean expansion valve flow meteringdevice.

This thermal expansion valve (TXV)allows the unit to operate with anentering fluid temperature from 25 F to110 F [-3.9 C to 43.3 C], and entering airtemperatures from 40 F to 90 F [4.4 C to32.2 C]. The valve precisely metersrefrigerant flow through the circuitry toachieve desired heating or cooling.

Unlike cap-tube assemblies, theexpansion valve device allows the exactamount of refrigerant required to meetthe coil load demands. This precisemetering by the TXV increases theefficiency of the unit.

Reversing ValveA system reversing valve (4-way valve)is included with all heating/ coolingunits. This valve is piped to be energizedin the cooling mode. Once the valve isenergized for cooling, it will remainenergized until the control system isturned to the OFF position, or a heatingcycle is initiated.

Units with the cooling only option willnot receive a reversing valve.

Figure FB-12 – Expansion Valve

Features andBenefits

Hot Gas Reheat (option)For true atmospheric conditioning andclimate control, Trane provides accurate, cost effective dehumidification controlthrough a hot gas reheat option. Thisoption is designed to accommodate thesize 009 console configuration.

With this reheat option, the return airfrom the space is cooled by the air-to-refrigerant coil, then reheated by thereheat coil to control not only spacetemperature, but to also reduce therelative humidity of the space. Theamount of moisture removal of a specificheat pump is determined by the unit’slatent capacity rating.

When operating in the reheat mode, thehumidistat signals the reheat relay coil toenergize, allowing the high pressurerefrigerant gas to flow from thecompressor, through the reversing valve, into the reheat valve, for passagethrough the reheat coil. See Figure FB-24for the reheat conditioning schematic.

Figures FB-25 and FB-26 show the basicheating and cooling cycle of the consolepiped with the reheat option.

Common reheat applications include:

• Conditioned-air delivered directly tothe space

• Auditoriums, theaters, classrooms orwhere a large latent load exist

• Computer room space conditioning

• Anywhere humidity control is aproblem Figure FB-25 – Cooling Mode for Console Unit Piped With Hot Gas Reheat Option

Figure FB-28 – Low and High PressureSwitches

Stand-alone SystemThe 24V electro-mechanical design maybe applied as a stand-alone controlsystem. The stand-alone design providesaccurate temperature control directlythrough a unit mounted controller, or awall-mounted mercury bulb or electronicthermostat. This system setup may beutilized in a replacement design where asingle unit retrofit is needed. It may beeasily interfaced with a field providedcontrol system by way of the factoryinstalled 18-pole terminal strip.

This stand-alone control is frequentlyutilized on lower volume jobs where abuilding controller may not benecessary, or where field installed directdigital controls are specified. This type ofcontrol design does require a constantflow of water to the water source heatpump. With a positive way to sense flowto the unit, the units safety devices willtrigger the unit off.

The stand-alone system design providesa low cost option of installation while stillallowing room control freedom for eachunit. See Figure FB-29 for 24V stand-alone system controls.

Safety DevicesAll unit safety devices are provided toprevent compressor damage.

Low Pressure SwitchThe low pressure switch preventscompressor operation under low charge, excessive loss of charge situations, andunder low temperature operation. Thisdevice is installed on the suction side ofthe refrigeration circuit. It is set toactivate at refrigerant pressures of 20psig to fit most applications.

High Pressure SwitchThe high pressure switch preventscompressor operation during high orexcessive discharge pressures. Thisdevice is located on the discharge side ofthe compressor. The pressure switch de-energizes the compressor whendischarge pressure exceeds 395 psig.See Figure FB-28 for pressure switches.

Lockout RelayThe lockout relay works with the low andhigh pressure switch to preventcompressor operation if the unit is underlow or high refrigerant circuit pressure,or condensate overflow conditions. Thelockout relay may be reset at thethermostat, or by cycling power to theunit.

General alarm is accomplished throughthe lockout relay and is used for drivinglight emitting diodes (LEDs). This featuremay be used to drive field suppliedrelays, but cannot be used to drive fieldinstalled control inputs.

17WSHP-PRC004-EN

Features andBenefits

Deluxe 24VControls

Deluxe 24V featuresinclude:

Random StartThe random start relay provides a timedelay start-up of the compressor whencycling to the occupied mode. A newstart delay time between 3 and 10seconds is applied each time power isenabled to the unit.

Anti-short Cycle TimerThe anti-short cycle timer provides athree minute time delay betweencompressor stop and compressorrestart.

Brown-out ProtectionThe brown-out protection functionmeasures the input voltage to thecontroller and halts the compressoroperation. Once a brown-out situationhas occurred, the anti-short cycle timerwill become energized. The general faultcontact will not be affected by thiscondition. The voltage will continue tobe monitored until the voltage increases. The compressor will be enabled at thistime if all start-up time delays haveexpired, and all safeties have beensatisfied.

Compressor DisableThe compressor disable relay provides atemporary disable in compressoroperation. The signal would be providedfrom a water loop controller in thesystem. It would disable the compressorbecause of low water flow, peak limitingor if the unit goes into an unoccupiedstate. Once the compressor has beendisabled, the anti-short cycle time periodwill begin. Once the compressor disablesignal is no longer present, and allsafeties are satisfied, the control willallow the compressor to restart.

Generic RelayThe generic relay is provided for fielduse. Night setback or pump restart aretwo options that may be wired to theavailable relay. (Note: Night setback isavailable as factory wired.) An externalClass II 24VAC signal will energize therelay coil on terminals R1 and R2.Terminals C (common), NO (normallyopen), and NC (normally closed) will beprovided for the relay contacts.

Safety ControlThe deluxe microprocessor receivesseparate input signals from therefrigerant high pressure switch, lowsuction pressure switch and condensateoverflow.

In a high pressure situation, thecompressor contactor is de-energized,which suspends compressor operation. The control will go into soft lockoutmode initializing a three minute timedelay and a random start of 3 to 10second time delays. Once these delayshave expired, the unit will be allowed torun. If a high pressure situation occurswithin one hour of the first situation, thecontrol will be placed into a manuallockout mode, halting compressoroperation, and initiating the generalalarm.

In a low temperature situation, the lowpressure switch will open after thecompressor starts. If the switch is openfor 45 seconds during compressor start, the unit will go into soft lockout modeinitializing a three minute time delay anda random start of 3 to 10 second timedelays. Once these delays have expired, the unit will be allowed to run. If the lowpressure situation occurs again, and thedevice is open for more than 45 seconds, the control will be placed into a manuallockout mode, halting compressoroperation, and initiating the generalalarm.

In a condensate overflow situation, thecontrol will go into manual lockoutmode, halting compressor operation, and initiating the general alarm.

The general alarm is initiated when thecontroller goes into a manual lockoutmode for either high pressure, lowpressure or condensate overflowconditions. The alarm can be reset at thethermostat or by cycling power to theunit.

Features andBenefits

Deluxe 24VControls

Small Building ControlThe deluxe 24V electro-mechanicaldesign may be applied as a stand-alonecontrol system or as a multi-unitinstallation system. With a stand-alonedesign, units run independently of oneanother with a mercury bulb orelectronic digital thermostat.

With a multiple unit installation, the unitsmay be daisy-chained directly to theTrane Tracer loop controller (TLC),pump(s), boiler, and tower for acomplete networked water-sourcesystem. The TLC provides a nightsetback output, and a pump requestinput for system optimization.See Figure FB-34 for 24 volt deluxecontrol system.

Tracer ZN.510Controls

Features andBenefits

Tracer ZN.510 ControlsTracer ZN.510 is a direct digital control(DDC) system, specifically designed forwater-source units to provide control ofthe entire unit, as well as outputs for unitstatus and fault detection. Each device, isfactory installed and commissioned toensure the highest level of quality in unitdesign. The Tracer ZN.510 controlpackage includes: See Figure FB-35 forthe console Tracer ZN.510 control box.

Additions to 24V Deluxe Controller:

• 75 VA transformer

• Heating/cooling status

• Occupied/unoccupied mode

• Fan and filter status

• Reversing valve coil (for heating andcooling units only)

• Two-speed fan motor (unit mountedfan speed switch)

• 18-pole terminal strip (for low voltagehook-up)

• Optional: Condensate overflow

• Optional: Motorized 2-position damper

Direct Digital ControlsIn addition to being factory configured tocontrol the unit fan, compressor, andreversing valve of the unit, the TracerZN.510 controller is designed tocoordinate the water side of the water-source system. If applied in apeer-to-peer communicationenvironment, data between similarcontrollers may be exchanged withoutrequiring a building automation system.See Figure FB-36 for the Tracer ZN.510board.

Features andBenefits

Tracer ZN.510Controls

Tracer ZN.510 features include:

Compressor OperationThe compressor is cycled on and off tomeet heating or cooling zone demands.Single compressor units use the unitcapacity and pulse width modulation(PWM) logic along with minimum on/offtimers to determine the compressor’soperation. The compressor is controlledON for longer periods as capacityincreases and shorter periods ascapacity decreases.

Random StartTo prevent all of the units in a buildingfrom energizing major loads at the sametime, the controller observes a randomstart from 0 to 25 seconds. This timerhalts the controller until the random starttime expires.

Reversing Valve OperationFor cooling, the reversing valve output isenergized simultaneously with thecompressor. It will remain energizeduntil the controller turns on thecompressor for heating. At this time, thereversing valve moves to a de-energizedstate. In the event of a power failure orcontroller OFF situation, the reversingvalve output will default to the heating(de-energized) state.

Fan OperationThe supply air fan operates at the fanswitch selected speed in the occupied oroccupied standby mode. When switch isset to AUTO, the fan is configured forcycling ON with heating or cooling. Thefan will run for 30 seconds beyondcompressor shutdown in both occupiedand unoccupied mode.

Filter Maintenance TimerThe controller’s filter status is based onthe unit fan’s cumulative run hours. Thecontroller compares the fan run timeagainst an adjustable fan run hours limitand recommends unit maintenance asrequired.

Data SharingThe Tracer ZN.510 controller is capableof sending or receiving data (set points, fan request, or space temperature) toand from other controllers on thecommunication link. This allows multipleunits to share a common spacetemperature sensor in both stand-aloneand building automation applications.

Night SetbackThe four operations of the Tracer ZN.510controller include occupied, occupiedstandby, occupied bypass andunoccupied.

In an occupied situation, the controlleruses occupied heating and cooling setpoints to provide heating and cooling tothe building. This occupied operation isnormally used during the daytime hourswhen the building is at the highestoccupancy level.

In an occupied standby situation, thecontrollers heating and cooling setpoints are usually much wider than theoccupied set points. This occupiedstandby operation is used duringdaytime hours when people are notpresent in the space (such as lunchtimeor recess). To determine the spaceoccupancy, an occupancy sensor isapplied.

In an unoccupied situation, the controllerassumes the building is vacant, whichnormally falls in evening hours when aspace may be empty. In the unoccupiedmode, the controller uses the defaultunoccupied heating and cooling setpoints stored in the controller. When thebuilding is in unoccupied mode, individual units may be manually placedinto timed override of the unoccupiedmode at the units wall sensor. Duringtimed override, the controller interpretsthe request and initiates the occupiedsetpoint operation, then reports theeffective occupancy mode as occupiedbypass.

In the occupied bypass mode, thecontroller applies the occupied heatingand cooling setpoint for a 120 minutetime limit.

Features andBenefits

High and Low Pressure Safety Controls The Tracer ZN.510 controller detects thestate of the high pressure or lowpressure switches. When a fault issensed by one of these switches, thecorresponding message is sent to theTracer ZN.510 controller to be loggedinto the fault log. When the circuitreturns to normal, the high pressurecontrol and low pressure controlautomatically reset. If a second fault isdetected within a thirty-minute timespan, the unit must be manually reset.

Tracer ZN.510 BoardThe application drawing in Figure FB-37references component deviceconnections to the Tracer ZN.510 board.

Three LED’s (light emitting diodes) areprovided for indicating the operatingmode of the controller. See Table FB-5for LED specifics.

Condensate OverflowWhen condensate reaches the trip point,a condensate overflow signal generatesa diagnostic which disables the fan, unitwater valves (if present), andcompressor. The unit will remain in ahalted state until the condensationreturns to a normal level. At this time, the switch in the drain pan willautomatically reset. However, thecontroller’s condensate overflowdiagnostic must be manually reset toclear the diagnostic and restart the unit.

Tracer ZN.510Controls

Building Control AdvantagesThe Tracer ZN.510 controller has theability to share information with one orseveral units on the samecommunication link. This sharing ofinformation is made possible via atwisted pair of wire and a buildingautomation system or through Trane’sRover™ service tool .

This type of application would mostcommonly be used for a large space(s)that may require more than one unit. Inaddition to this application design, theTracer ZN.510 controller provides a wayfor units located within the same spaceto share the same zone sensor toprevent units from simultaneouslyheating and cooling in the same space.See Figure FB-38 for Tracer ZN.510control system.

PerformanceData Sound

The Challenge of Low SoundThe GECA product line was developedto be the industry leader in noiseperformance. To achieve that goal, stateof the art acoustic design and testtechnologies were used to identify andtreat the dominant noise and vibrationtransmission paths in each unit. As aresult, numerous noise control featureshave been incorporated in the GECAunits, including: See Figure PD-1 forcompressor noise control for modelGEHA.

• Two stage compressor vibrationisolation systems with 12-gaugeintermediate mounting plates

• Lined compressor enclosure

• Heavy-gauge base assembly

• Maximum sized return-air opening andfilter sizing

• Water-to-refrigerant heat exchangervibration isolation

To ensure consistent performance, anextensive series of tests were conductedon each cabinet size:

• Mock-up (NC) sound pressure testing(a noise evaluation in typical REALWORLD installation).

• Sound power testing per ARI’s newstandard 350 for non-ducted airhandling equipment (a noiseevaluation to quantify the strength ofvarious sound components forapplication in building system design). These include:

GECA: Inlet + Casing Discharge

For unit specific octave band soundpower data, please refer to the TOPPSselection program.

Figure PD-1 – Elevation View of Noise Control

What is Sound Pressure?Sound pressure is a pressuredisturbance in the atmosphere whoseintensity is influenced not only by thestrength of the source, but also by thesurroundings and the distance from thesource to the receiver. Sound pressure iswhat our ears hear, and what soundmeters measure. The level of soundpressure, or the loudness of a givennoise source, depends on three factors:

1. The strength of the source

2. The environment in which the sourceis located

3. The listener’s distance from the source

As an example, of the effect ofenvironment, consider the soundproduced by a drum. Clearly, the drum isperceived to be louder in a bathroomwith hard tile walls than it is in themiddle of a football field. Also, thefarther one moves away from the drum, the quieter it sounds. In each case, thevibration of the drum (the strength of thesource) is the same; the perceiveddifferences in noise level are due to theenvironment.

Because of the extremely wide range ofsound pressure perceivable by a person-typically five or six order of magnitude –it is convenient to express soundpressure on a logarithmic scale. As aresult, adding two equal sound sourcestogether will result in an overall increaseof 3 dB. However, 3 dB is barely aperceptible increase in sound. It takes anincrease of 10 dB to be perceived astwice as loud.

PerformanceData Sound

What is Sound Power?Sound power is a measure of theacoustical energy emitted from a soundsource, and is an absolute value. Asdiscussed above, our hearing does notperceive sound power directly, as thereis always some environmental mediumbetween the source and the listener. However, from the standpoint of abuilding designer, sound power is oftenthe preferred means of quantifying thenoise of a given unit because it is acertifiable quantity. Using predictions areused to tailor the design to the soundpressure level requirements of thebuilding. The environmental effects thatmust be taken into account whenconverting sound power to soundpressure for a specific location can belumped together and called the TransferFunction.

Sound power should always be usedwhen making unit to unit soundcomparisons because it is a certifiableabsolute measure of the sound energyproduced by the unit. In contrast, soundpressure is not certifiable because it isdifficult to ensure that eachmanufacturer tests in precisely the sameenvironment. As in the case of soundpressure, it is useful to express soundpower on a logarithmic scale.

What are NC and dBA?Both NC and dBA are single numberdescriptors used to represent perceivedloudness. Both scales take into accountthe fact that people are more sensitive tohigh frequencies than they are to lowfrequencies (see Figure PD-2 forfrequency range).

Noise Criterion (NC) is widely used toquantify indoor sound. The NC level isdetermined by the strength of soundpressure across the 63 Hz to 8000 Hzfrequency range.

“A” weighted sound (dBA) is a singlenumber descriptor often used to definesound in outdoor environments. Forexample, local sound ordinancestypically regulate dBA levels at propertylines. Hearing-related safety standardswritten by such bodies as theOccupational Safety and HealthOrganization (OSHA) also commonlyrefer to A-weighted sound readings.

As a rule, “A” weighting is applied tooctave-band sound pressure data.Applying “A” weighting sound power isonly appropriate in accordance with ARI270. While NC and dBA are the mostpopular, other single number descriptorsfor sound are available including RoomCriterion (RC), NCB and otherweightings.

Mock-up Tests of the WSHPBecause the transfer function (thedifference between sound pressure andsound power) of a water-source comfortsystem is often a complex function ofenvironment and operating mode, wehave found it advantageous tosupplement sound power certificationtests with sound pressuremeasurements taken in a mock-up of atypical environment. The model GECAmock-up tests were conducted with thefollowing characteristics. See FigurePD-3 for room characteristics duringsound testing.

• Sheet rock walls

• Standard office-type carpeting

• Standard office-type 2-ft x 2-ft[.6 x .6 m] acoustical tile drop ceiling

• 30-ft x 20-ft [9.14 x 6.1 m] room

• No windows

• Unit against the short wall (in themiddle)

For convenience, NC data for all GECAunits are provided in Table PD-20.

Model GECA NC levels are tabulated inperformance Table PD-20. Test resultsare given for each of the four cabinetsizes. Measurements were taken for thelargest tonnage of each cabinet size.

Mock-up test data provides an excellentgeneral look at how the units wouldperform in a typical environment. If theproposed installation varies significantlyfrom the mock-up facility and roomacoustics are a concern an acousticalprediction is justified. As mentionedbefore, a predictive analysis requiresoctave band sound power data.

Because of the large volume of ARI-350sound power data, we refer you to theTOPSS program for octave band andoverall levels for various components.

Water Regulating Valve AssemblyThe water regulating valve assemblyconsists of a direct acting valve and areverse acting valve installed on thewater-out side of the unit. The directacting valve opens in response to anincrease in discharge pressure duringthe cooling cycle. The reverse actingvalve opens in response to a decrease insuction pressure during the heatingcycle. Water regulating valves should beused where low flow, and low or highfluid temperature conditions could occur. This option is beneficial with open loopsystems, but not necessary. See FigureA-1 for water regulating valve assembly.

Motorized Water Valve for Open-LoopSystemsThe motorized water valve is installed onthe return line of the system between theloop and the loop pump module. Thisisolation device is less expensive and avery effective alternative to the waterregulating valve.

When the compressor begins running, the valve will open, allowing water toflow through the unit. As the compressorshuts down, the valve slowly closes off.The main purpose of the motorizedvalve is to shut off the flow of waterthrough the unit when the unit is off, thus reducing water consumption. Themotorized valve must be fast opening toprevent compressor trip-out, and slowclosing to prevent water-hammer.

SeeFigure A-2 for pump module assembly.Literature number WSHPC-IN-5 (72-9006-03) will provide electrical anddimensional requirements for the PMCAand PMBA products.

Hose KitsThe basic hose kit consists of a stainlesssteel outer braid with an inner core ortube made of a non-toxic syntheticpolymer. The couplings are designedwith solid male pipe thread at one end,and a ground-joint cone seat swivelfemale with a male adapter at theopposite end. The hoses are suitable forwater temperatures ranging between33 F and 211 F [.55 C and 99.4 C] withoutthe use of glycol.

Additional options can be provided toaccompany the hose kit design. Thesekits consist of a manual shut off/balancing device on the supply andreturn, or a self balancing device. Thespecialized hose kits can be ordered withor without a strainer. See Figure A-3 forthe WSHP hose kit.
