Metro extension work in Pipers Row

Much of the work in Pipers Row in recent weeks has taken place overnight to minimise disruption to stakeholders in the area. The work has been situated around Castle Street and has allowed for kerb lines to be installed and drainage works to be completed. In addition, the masts for overhead line equipment have been installed in three places along Pipers Row.

Paving works outside of and adjacent to The Britannia Hotel have continued with the installation of tactile paving, lighting columns and trees to improve the streetscape.

The next stage of work is to continue the installation of overhead line equipment at the junction of Bilston Street and Pipers Row, and connect it to the equipment already in place at Wolverhampton St. George’s Metro Stop. This work will also take place overnight to minimise disruption to stakeholders.

The paving and street scene works have been assisted by the milder-than-usual winter and this phase of the work is currently on schedule to complete in summer 2019.

Small Change for a Big Change

West Midlands Metro joins forces with local colleges to get careers on the right track

West Midlands Metro has partnered with two colleges to equip local people with the skills needed to apply for jobs created by the future expansion of the tramway.

Aimed at the long-term unemployed, the Sector Based Work Academy also has the backing of local job centres, and the first cohort of students from Dudley College last month paid a visit to the tram depot in Wednesbury.

During the tour they were given a taste of what it’s like to work in the light rail sector and an insight into the day-to-day operations of a busy tram network.

Carl Williams, Director of Operations at West Midlands Metro, explained: “Our plans for future growth are already creating a number of career opportunities across the business. The programme has been developed alongside our ongoing recruitment of Driver Customer Services Representatives and we’re looking for a number of specific skills.”

Working closely with the team at West Midlands Metro, City of Wolverhampton College and Dudley College have developed a programme that includes IT training, help with literacy and numeracy, customer service, various aspects of health and safety, including road safety and developing important employability skills such as producing a CV and interview performance.

Lorna Prosser, Adults Community and Employability Manager at City of Wolverhampton College added: “Through joint working between Midland Metro Limited and local partners, this city team approach is giving local people the opportunity to develop specific skills and knowledge that will enable them to apply for jobs with the organisation.”

The Wolverhampton Alternative Giving Campaign launched in October 2016 to support Street homeless and vulnerable people who access services in Wolverhampton.

Enjoy Wolverhampton, the Wolverhampton Business Improvement District, set up the initiative ‘Small Change for a Big Change’ to support and make a difference in the lives of the homeless and vulnerable people within the city centre.

To date, £16,500 has been raised via activities and generous donations from those living, working or visiting Wolverhampton. 100% of all money raised is shared between the Wolverhampton based charities, P3 Navigator, St. George’s House, Good Shepherd and the Wolverhampton Church Shelter.

One of the initiatives which the funds support is a breakfast club run by St. George’s Hub which makes a massive difference to the lives of those rough sleeping in the city centre. The people who attend not only get to enjoy a hot breakfast, but also have a safe space to address their problems, develop confidence and self-esteem as well as raising aspirations and getting practical help and support from the dedicated team at St. George’s.
