Hi everyone and welcome back to another Nippers season!

This year we are running our program a little differently from previous years with the

aim of improving our Junior Lifesavers’ confidence and skills set whilst lightening the

load of our Age Managers.

Each age group will require two Age Managers who will guide that age group to

“Specialist Stations” manned by volunteer members skilled in the areas of Surf

Education, Beach, Water and Board activities.

The program is designed to educate and provide activities and skill development within

an atmosphere of fun for all participants and will run from 9.30am – 11am unless

advised otherwise. Under 6s will participate in Nippers for one hour only (9.30am –

10.30am).

We still require Age Managers for most age groups and an Age Manager training

session will be organised before season commencement for those interested.

Yamba Junior Activities is reliant on volunteer support. The support and commitment of

our members is vital to the success of the Yamba SLSC Junior Development Program.

This year we are hosting a Far North Coast Branch carnival on our home beach as well

as the FNC Branch Titles – these carnivals are for Under 8s up and we will be needing

lots of support from parents, friends and helpers as well as enthusiasm from

competitors! I look forward to a rewarding season for everyone .

CODE OF CONDUCT The following Codes of Behaviour have been adopted by the Yamba SLSC Junior Activities

“Nippers”.

By joining the Yamba SLSC Junior Activities each Nipper, Parent or Caregiver

acknowledges and accepts these Codes of Conduct.

Photography

Photos are taken each week at nippers by our Publicity Officer and used on Facebook, in the newspaper, in

our newsletters and other promotional information. If you do not wish your child to be photographed,

you must notify the Junior Activities Coordinator in writing.

Parents, Caregivers & Spectators Code of Behaviour

Children participate in sport for their own enjoyment and development, not yours.

Encourage children to participate, do not force them.

Focus on the child’s efforts and performance rather than winning or losing.

Encourage children to always play by the rules.

Remember children learn best by example. Appreciate good performances and

skillful plays by all participants, working to promote good sportsmanship.

Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from sporting activities.

Respect officials, age managers and coaches decisions and teach children to do

likewise.

Show appreciation for age managers, administrators, coaches and officials.

Without them, your child could not participate.

Respect the rights, dignity and worth of others.

Nipper’s Code of Behaviour

Participate for your own enjoyment and benefit, not just to please parents and

coaches.

Respect our Club house and the equipment you use, wash it and return it after use.

Report any damage.

Treat all participants as you would like to be treated. Do not bully, put other

people down or throw sand.

Co-operate with your age managers, water safety officers, team mates, coaches,

officials and opponents. Without them there would be no nippers.

Wear your nipper cap at all times during nippers and pink singlets for water

activities.

Be a good sport. Applaud all performances, encourage others and follow the rules.

Page 7: Training the Lifesavers of Tomorrow” 2016-2017yambaslsc.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/Yamba-Surf...to having fun learning the importance of surf skills and meeting new friends

7

WHAT TO BRING?

You will need your coloured nipper cap, pink hi-viz singlet (U8’s-14’s), goggles (if you like to

wear them), sunscreen, a water bottle and a happy smile! Club swimmers are preferred and

are available from the merchandise room during nippers or during office hours (please see

the back page for office hours). It is advisable that all clothing and equipment be labelled

with your child’s name for easy return in case of loss.

WHO CAN JOIN NIPPERS?

Any child, boy or girl, may join Nippers once they have turned 5 years of age. To comply

with Surf Life Saving Australia regulations, no surf club can accept membership of a child

until they have reached the age of five.

Children who turn 5 by October 1st 2016 are able to join Yamba Nippers for the 2016-17

season.

NEW Nipper memberships for this current season will not be taken after February

1st, 2017 unless approved by the Co-ordinator. This is to enable all participants to

complete the necessary Surf Education program conducted each week.

U6 and U7 nipper’s activities are sand and shallow-water based. They do not engage

in competition.

U8 nippers participate in wade activities in waist deep water only and in beach

activities.

Surf swims and board activities commence from U9s up.

Please note that ‘Nippers’ does not teach children to swim but it does help build on

their existing water skills and confidence.

HIGH VISIBILITY SINGLETS All nippers who participate in water activities (Under 8’s up) will be given a Yamba Surf Club high

visibility singlet free of charge.

It is Yamba SLSC Nippers policy that high visibility singlets are mandatory for Nippers

participating in all water activities. Children will not be allowed to participate in water events if

they do not have their singlet on.

Surf Lifesaving Australia regulations state that high visibility singlets MUST be worn when

competing at all surf carnivals.

SKULL CAP POLICY All nippers must wear their coloured skull caps at all times during nippers. The wearing of skull

caps is a legal requirement to comply with Surf Life Saving safety regulations. Any nipper

without the correct coloured skull cap will not be able to participate at nippers.

Yamba’s gold and black skull caps must be worn whilst competing at surf carnivals.

Page 8: Training the Lifesavers of Tomorrow” 2016-2017yambaslsc.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/Yamba-Surf...to having fun learning the importance of surf skills and meeting new friends

8

PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT

PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT is important at any club. To be able to operate, Nippers

must have qualified Age Managers (1 to every 10 children), Water Safety Personnel (1 to

every 5 children in the water, except in calm conditions where it becomes 1:10), Age

Manager Assistants, BBQ Helpers and people to set up and pack up the equipment.

As you can see, parents are a vital part of Yamba Junior Activities. This junior activity is

not a babysitting service but a place of learning in a fun atmosphere. There is an element

of risk in this sport so all age managers will need assistance from other parents to ensure

the safety of all children.

WATER SAFETY is important. Persons involved in water safety are required to have

either a surf lifesaving Bronze Medallion Award or a Surf Rescue Certificate. The surf

can be a dangerous place at times, if not treated with respect so, if water safety

ratios are not met, water activities will be suspended for ALL age groups.

AGE MANAGERS must have completed the Age Managers Award, either in person or

online. We all know sickness strikes and family commitments come first, so it is important

to have more than 2 qualified Age Managers per age group. So if there are no qualified

Age Managers for an age group on any particular Nipper day, that age group will be

cancelled for the day.

Free courses are run each season for members to obtain their Age Managers Award, Surf

Rescue Certificate, Bronze Medallion, First Aid Certificate, Advanced Resuscitation or

Radio Operator’s Certificate. These are advised via the monthly club newsletters or

contact our Chief training Officer Kim Morgans.

BBQ HELPERS

Each Sunday we have a barbeque in front of the board shed. We always need help to set

up, sell, and pack away. Please See Larry or Trevor if you are able to lend a hand.

CARNIVAL WORK PARTIES

We have two carnivals this year so we will need as many helpers as possible to join the

work party to help set up and pack away after the carnival. This is a fun time and great

friendships and memories are often made. It involves making sandwiches or helping on

the bbq, selling tickets, erecting tents and enclosures etc.

PLEASE offer your assistance - many hands make light work!

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

It is mandatory that at least one parent /guardian from each family be either an

Associate or Active (patrol/active reserve) member of Yamba SLSC. See

Membership details at back of this booklet (p. 16).

Each week nippers are required to participate in the Surf Life Saving Education

Program. This is incorporated into the weekly activities and therefore it is

important that children attend regularly.

Age Managers are responsible for the supervision of children during Nipper

Activity times only. Misbehaviour or misconduct will result in your child being signed

out. Please see the Coordinator if you disagree with a decision.

Parents must sign their child in and out at the start and end of each session with

the appropriate Age Manager. Age Managers cannot sign anybody’s child in or out

of Nippers other than their own.

Each activity day members will assemble at the Nippers control area on the beach

ready to follow their Age Manager for activities. Please be on time and ready to

start at the designated times. If your child’s Age Group is on for helping (see

program), please be ready at 9am to assist.

The designated age group coloured skull caps MUST be worn by all participating

Nippers.

Participants must wear sunscreen and bring a water bottle.

Parents are requested to assist on the beach wherever possible.

Nippers are required to stay with their age group at all times. If your child needs

to go to the toilet, the parent or guardian must accompany them. Nippers that

wander off from their group will be asked to be signed out by their parent or

caregiver.

Children are not permitted in the clubhouse or board shed without an adult member.

To gain their relevant Surf Education Award, it is anticipated that children

Page 10: Training the Lifesavers of Tomorrow” 2016-2017yambaslsc.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/Yamba-Surf...to having fun learning the importance of surf skills and meeting new friends

10

Yamba nippers under the care of their Coloured skull caps distinguish the different Age Manager at a surf carnival age groups at weekly nipper activities.

AGE MANAGERS

Age Managers are responsible for the supervision and well-being of their group and for

keeping their group together during activity rotations. Most of all, the Age Manager is

responsible for the promotion of enjoyment, sportsmanship and fun in all activities.

Duties performed by the Age Manager include:

Supervision of children, ensuring their safety and well-being at all junior activities.

Acting in a way that will positively influence the personality and social development of

the children.

Recording of participation and results in events conducted.

Having a basic understanding of competition rules and regulations.

‘Specialist stations’ will be in operation this season during nippers where age managers will

rotate their group between swim, board, beach and education activity stations which will be

run by members with expertise in those particular areas.

If you are interested in becoming an Age Manager there will be ‘hands on’ training during the season. The position of Age Manager is of a voluntary nature. Assistance from parents on the beach each week is necessary.

SURF CARNIVALS Yamba SLSC will host 2 nipper carnivals this season:

Branch carnival – Sunday November 6th

Far North Coast Branch Titles – Sat/Sun January 28th/29th

Summary and Surf Carnival Day Information

Yamba Surf Club is part of the Far North Coast Branch of Surf Lifesaving which runs from

Yamba to Fingal near the Qld border. Branch carnivals usually begin at 8.30am and finish

around 4pm. Parental assistance is required at Carnivals. Help is needed to erect and take

down tents, carry gear from our gear trailer to the beach and return at the end of the day.

The U8 to U14 nippers are able to compete at carnival level. Notice of competing in a

carnival must be given to the JAC Coordinator the Sunday prior to the carnival. You

cannot just turn up at a carnival.

Nippers must participate in their Surf Education Award by attending a minimum 66% of

regular nipper activity days to be eligible to compete at carnivals.

Competitors must have passed the relevant Competitions Skills Proficiency before they can

attend a carnival. This even applies to children who only want to compete in beach events.

There is a ratio of competitors to water safety and officials. If this ratio is not met,

children will not be able to compete, so parents or other family members must be willing to

take on a role to enable their child to compete.

Competitors must remain within the club tent area unless permission to leave from the Age

Manager has been approved. Many events including Team events have been missed as a result

of competitors wandering from the area.

Yamba SLSC competition caps and Yamba club swimmers MUST be worn while competing.

Pink hi-viz singlets are required for water events. No jewellery to be worn at any time.

Parents, unless performing in uniform as officials, are NOT permitted in the competition

arena.

The JAC Co-ordinator or designated representative is the only person from our Club eligible

to lodge a protest regarding any alleged infringement of the rules. The Carnival is under the

direction of the Carnival Referee. The Referee can alter or even cancel a program if adverse

surf, beach or weather conditions prevail.

No Alcohol and no Smoking is permitted within the Carnival area.

Most importantly, carnivals are all about participation and fun. At no time are children to be

discouraged from having a go, code of conduct applies, team penalties may occur.

COMPULSORY – Have fun, support each other and be proud to be part of Yamba SLSC!

Page 14: Training the Lifesavers of Tomorrow” 2016-2017yambaslsc.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/Yamba-Surf...to having fun learning the importance of surf skills and meeting new friends

Board and Swim Subsidies

Some carnival competitors MAY be eligible for club subsidies for pool swimming training with an

accredited coach or for the assisted purchase of a board (receipts needed). Strict conditions do

apply and certain conditions must be met. A copy of the club policy can be obtained from the club

office or from the Junior Activities Coordinator.

END OF SEASON CLUB AWARDS for NIPPERS Age Champions: 1 male and female champion and runner-up from each competitive age group (U8’s-

U14’s) is awarded a trophy at the end of the season. This is determined by the following point system –

3 points are awarded for participation on a Club Activity Day. Participation requires the Nipper

to attend the Club Activity Day, have their name signed on and off and participate to the Age

Managers satisfaction in the session. Any child representing Yamba SLSC at SLSA recognised

Carnivals or events on days that clash with Club Days will be awarded the 3 participation points.

3 points only are awarded to U12 to U14 Nippers for participation in the Far North Coast Branch

Youth Carnival. As this particular Carnival does not allow entry of younger Age Groups this point

allocation is designed to reflect fairness across all Age Groups.

1 point will be awarded for attendance at North Coast Branch JAC Carnivals, plus 1 point for

participation in each individual event to the Age Managers’ satisfaction. When a Nipper declines

to attend a Carnival 1 point only will be awarded upon attendance at alternate activities that may

be available at Yamba. No points will be awarded if there are no alternative activities available.

Club Championship Day/s: Placing in individual races will earn the following points - First 6,
