Keventer fruit ripening chamber is situated in Nilkunj Bazar, Shubhash Nagar, Barasat. The Chairman of this
plant is Mr. Mahendra Kumar Jalan who started Keventer Fresh Agro in the year 1986.
Keventer is the largest organized supplier of branded bananas in the Eastern region, and sell almost 3,00,000
pieces daily. Unique ripening technology is used to ensure healthy, delicious and nutritious bananas. Keventer’s
integrated facility at Barasat has a banana ripening capacity of over 50MT daily.
Keventer is also actively involved in enriching farmers' lives by forming a Global Development Alliance with
CII-FACE (Confederation of Indian Industry - Food and Agriculture Centre of Excellence) and USAID (U.S.
Agency for International Development).
After achieving Market Leader status in Kolkata, Keventer Bananas are now also available in Siliguri and its
adjoining areas. Keventer is in the process of setting up Processing Centres at Durgapur and Jharkhand.

Dr. Nabanita Banarjee, Hafiz Md Abu Tahir, Director, Adarsha College of Education, Kadambagachi, WB
expressed keenness over conducting the said training program. The faculty and staff of the college were very
enthusiastic about the program.
Hafiz Md Abu Tahir, Director, Adarsha College of Education, Kadambagachi, WB Introduced the Organizers
to the students and explained the students the importance of the naturally ripened fruits. He inspired the
students to follow the details of the course and benefit from the same. He had a positive outlook towards
organizing skill development courses for the students.
He opined that the youth who undergo this training program would be enabled to handle the ripening
chambers in a scientific and systematic way. Moreover they themselves can successfully become potential
entrepreneurs by setting up ripening chambers and other allied agriculture activity. Thereby they are able to
create employment and also become job providers rather than job seekers.
The staff and students were very encouraged to know about the financial assistance and the impetus available
from the Government to build the interest in the Agriculture sector of the country. They applauded the efforts
of NCCD for organizing such trainings all across the country.
FEEDBACK FROM TRAINEES
The participants expressed that the training program was comprehensive and beneficial. They were of the view
that the information given by experts and faculty was a great learning experience. The participants were surprised
to know that some of the visually appealing fruits available that in the market are ripened by Calcium Carbide and
expressed that the ban on Calcium Carbide should be further strengthen and NCCD should implement more such
trainings.
They opined that the visit to the Keventer Fresh Ripening Chamber gave them a chance to see the ripening
process and get a hands on experience. It was a great learning experience for them when the staff of Keventer
Fresh Ltd. explained to them the entire procedures and best practices followed at Keventer Fresh Ltd. The
officials guided them around the unit showing and explaining the Sorting, grading lines, machinery and controls,
ripening chambers. The trainees found that the entire information shared very informative and the participants
were of the view that this skill would be useful to them in the near future.
The participants appreciated the contents of Dockets printed by the organizers and the knowledge imparted in the
training program. They appreciated the fact that the dockets summarizing the harmful effects of carbide ripened
fruits, aspects of ethylene ripening and schedule of training were provided in their regional language
The training program is a practical hands on experience and very helpful in understanding the operations of
ripening chamber and how the Government is actively available to support the cause. The efforts made by NCCD
in organizing the program at Adarsha College of Education, Kadambagachi, WB, were appreciated by all.
FEEDBACK FROM FACULTY
The faculty was very keen to spread awareness about the harmful effects of carbide and encourage people
to use natural ripening.
They appreciated the efforts of the government and NCCD.
They thanked NCCD and ICE for organizing the visit to Keventer Fresh Ltd. which was an excellent
hands on learning experience for the students as well as the faculty.
They wanted the training to have a mention about the proven ways of identifying carbide ripened fruits.
They were of the view that this type of training program should be conducted all over the country at
regular intervals

Training Program on Capacity Building in Fruit Ripening
Adarsha College of Education, Kadambagachi, WB: As per the agenda of the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India,
Mr. Narendra Modi, Agriculture is the driving force of the economy. The government is laying special emphasis
on development of the agriculture sector and encouraging the citizens to come up with projects and businesses to
support this sector. The Ministry of Agriculture has introduced a Two Day training program on “Capacity
Building in Fruit Ripening” throughout the country. The course will be offered by Ministry of Agriculture,
Government of India (Carried out by National Centre for Cold Chain development (NCCD)-the nodal
government of India body for cold chain along with ICE Centre of Excellence).
The training is aimed at imparting education and awareness regarding the modern methods of Fruit Ripening,
hazards of Carbide Ripened fruits and the support available from the government to set up fruit ripening
chambers.
The workshop was successfully conducted in Adarsha College of Education, Kadambagachi, WB, on 19th
& 20th
August 2015 in collaboration with Adarsha College of Education, Kadambagachi, WB. The workshop was
attended by the students and faculties and was a great learning experience for all.
PREPARATION FOR THE SESSIONS:
After receiving the approvals for conducting trainings from National Centre for Cold Chain Development
(NCCD), we contacted Adarsha College of Education, Kadambagachi, WBand the owners of ripening chamber to
give wide publicity about the training program.
The existing ripening units in Shubhash Nagar, Barasat were enthusiastic to open their doors for the field visit and
were also pleased to share their entrepreneurial journey with the trainees. Mr. S P Chaudhury, DGM of the
ripening units respectively Co-ordinate effectively with the organizers to ensure participation by all concerned in
the industry.
The related companies, agriculture universities and bank representatives were contacted for the lectures to be
given during the training. They were extremely enthusiastic and to be part of the training and the response was
overwhelming.

ABOUT HARMFUL EFFECTS OF CARBIDE
The objective of the program was to:
Train Human resources in banana ripening technology
Educate the trainees about the harmful effects of Carbide ripened fruits
Educate the trainees in real time conditions to give them hands o experience
Promotion of standards, scientific procedures and best practices in banana ripening.
Assist in providing employment opportunities to the trained candidates through our existing network of
promoters of banana ripening chambers.
Educate the potential entrepreneurs about
o The financial viability of setting up a Banana ripening chamber.
o The Technical standards on Banana Ripening established by Ministry of Agriculture.
o New MIDH guidelines and financial assistance available
o Financial assistance available from Indian Banks
Provide feedback concerning future training needs, and participate in the design of annual training
activities.
The prospective employers i.e.: ripening chamber owners allowed practical trainings in their facility and actively
participated with the trainees, and clears the doubts of trainees during the practical session.
They have been registered in our database and will be in touch for the preparation of DPRs etc.
Actual employment generated will be monitored and reported to the NCCD
