Scan-SHS Project

Project Presentation ScanSHS@Transforming Healthcare with Technology Summit

The aim of ScanSHS project is to improve the skill levels of medical officers in primary health centers of Tamilnadu in the usage of ultrasound for antenatal screening for early

detection of fetal abnormalities through innovative and effective use of technology

Page 4: Training of Medical officers in Primary Health Centers of Tamilnadu to reduce perinatal mortality

Goals of Scan-SHS Project

•Offer a viable healthcare training program for healthcare practitioners in rural Tamilnadu, to improve skills in fetal imagingfor early detection of fetal abnormalities like NTDs, Abdominal wall defects, IUGR etc.

Offer a blended training mechanism that would allow the medical officers at the primary health center to interact with experts and gain skills over a period of time.

System of Audit for continuous evaluation of skill levels. Specialists remotely assess the performance of the medical officer and provide feedback.

Sms Alerts when anomalies are detected for specialist intervention and management

Demonstrate and validate the skills acquired. Sophisticated software analysing performance and suggesting areas of improvement.

The project shall result in reduction of perinatal mortality

Challenges

Ultrasound availability in all PHC’s / Government Hospitals

Lack of training – under utilization

No accreditation for those performing ultrasound hence lack of confidence in reporting

Doctors working at primary level to be trained in a specialty in a short time

Imparting theoretical skills and training in a standardized fashion

Geographically dispersed locations

Periodic audit and a verifiable training program

Low Skill Levels, Geographically spread, Standardisation

The Scan-SHS Approach

The project shall result in reduction in perinatal mortality

Step 1 Identification of the PHC’s, List of doctors and Pre-test

Step 2 Orientation session for all doctors/trainers for 2 days

Step 3 Doctors take online theoretical course (http://www.sonoedu.com)

Step 4 “Hands on training” by accredited trainers in each district Installation of specialized software for ultrasound reporting and training on use of software

Step 5Online audit of Images and reports by specialists Periodic Evaluation and Feedback

Foetal Management Software and Reporting

Specialised Software for management of fetus

- Demographics- Pregnancy Dating - Plotting Fetal Growth - Past pregnancy history- Risk for anomalies- Standardized Image set- Upload for audit - Expert Alerts - Statistics, audits, management reports

Sonocare was successfully integrated into Primary Health Center workflow with support for expert opinion

Sonocare – ICT in fetal medicine practice

Comprehensive fetal medicine solution devised with the clinician in mindHelps the medical practitioner to focus on the patient, not the processDiagnostic +Reporting + Research + Tracking +Auditing tool, all put together

Sonocare in diagnosis Are the dates right? Is the baby small? Is it growth restricted?

Scan SHS : Audit Enabled Education

•First of its kind education program for healthcare practitioners to improve their skills in fetal imaging and early detection of fetal anomalies

Continuous assessment, periodic feedback and mentoring by experts has helped develop a talent pool in the primary health centers, which in turn can be leveraged for further capacity building

Capacity building and skill development through appropriate use of technology can significantly improve the quality of healthcare delivery especially in rural India where there is a huge scarcity of specialised practitioners

Effective use of Technology for capacity building in Rural India
