baths opened on the Wild Atlantic coast of Strandhill, Co. Sligo, Ireland. This tradition is

continued today by the Walton family. Seaweed baths have been popular for centuries and

VOYA bring this to you in a range of certified organic seaweed skin care products and spa-

therapies.

VOYA is a family-owned, Irish business and we are proud to have produced the world’s first

range of certified organic seaweed based products.

History of seaweed baths

1700s Dating back over 300 years, seaweed baths were Ireland’s only indigenous

therapy and traditionally seen as the “sailors cure”.

1850s Seaweed had been hand-harvested in Sligo, Ireland for over 150 years.

1912 The first Seaweed Baths were opened in Strandhill Co. Sligo, Ireland.

1960s Before the last of the original Strandhill bath houses was destroyed in 1961 by

a Hurricane. There were about 300 bath houses in the region. As the tradition

had seen a significant decline, they remained unopened for many years.

2000 The Walton’s re-opened the town’s first new seaweed baths in Strandhill.

Until now, there are only 3 seaweed baths in Ireland.

2003 Lazy Days, the first VOYA retail product was launched.

2006 Over the course of 6 years of research, development and countless tests,

VOYA has a full range of seaweed-based organic products and spa-therapies.

2009 - Present VOYA’s journey continued and can now be found in 37 countries worldwide

What are seaweed baths?

“Seaweed baths are a traditional marine cure therapy

indigenous to Ireland….”

Seaweed naturally absorbs its nourishment from the sea. As a result, seaweed contains

countless minerals, vitamins and beneficial ingredients in high concentrations.

When seaweed is steamed it produces amazing luxurious oils. These oils (complex

polysaccharides, proteins, minerals and vitamins) are naturally suspended in the water. As

heat has opened the skin’s pores, they all are readily absorbed.

Seaweed baths have been a

great attraction for years, often used

as a way of relaxing, relieving pain

and in more modern times as a great

way to unwind and de-stress.

Seaweed baths act as an

amazing conditioning agent for the

skin and hair.

They are also used as a

treatment for cellulite and have anti-

The use of seaweed in baths

has an amazing detoxification effect.

Quite simply the bath is a large

poultice, quickly removing toxins,

Seaweed is an amazing fully renewable natural resource In Ireland. Since the 18th century,

over 800 different species of seaweed from Irish waters have been identified.

Ireland is the least densely populated country in Europe and the west coast of Ireland is the

least densely populated part of Ireland. If you add to this that there is no major/heavy

industry on its west coast, it leaves probably the most unpolluted waters in the Atlantic.

The Walton’s hand-harvest wild seaweed under special license in areas recognised for their

unprecedented natural beauty. The areas they harvest in are surrounded by special areas of

conservation

VOYA uses “sustainable” harvesting practices, which simply means only a portion of the

seaweed is removed and there is no impact on the environment. They do this for a number

of reasons.

o Firstly because they bring over 100 years of tradition to the selection of seaweed. By

removing only a portion of the seaweed, it allows it to grow back to full size within 8

months.

o The nutritional content of seaweed varies and

hand selection is essential to harvesting the best

seaweed.

o They do not use conventional mechanical

methods which destroy seaweed beds and also

marine life.

o Hand-harvesting ensures limited impact on the

delicate aquatic nursery beds, that seaweed

provides nearly all marine life.

The seaweed is hand harvested and processed within 2

hours in order that the maximum amount of vitamins,

minerals and proteins are locked inside nature’s most

powerful anti-oxidant.

The seaweed goes into the specialised drying rooms

where the sea water is extracted - in turn the seaweed is

put into a state of stasis.

The mineral content of some seaweeds accounts for up to 80% of its dry matter.

Seaweed classification

“There are 3 main groups of Seaweed….”

Brown algae (Phaeophyta) : Fucus / Laminaria

Red algae (Rhodophyta) : Lithothamnium / Corallina

Green algae (Chlorophyta) : Chlorella / Codium

Fucus Serratus - Serrated Wrack

The main stay of VOYA products. Fucus Serratus is used in nearly

every product. This seaweed survives by filtering the ocean for

nutrients and as a result amasses a huge amount of minerals

and vitamins. Oils from this seaweed have truly remarkable

effects on skin, hair and body. The anti-oxidant compounds

found naturally in this seaweed have a dramatic impact in the

fight against ageing.

Laminaria Digitata - Tangleweed

Different seaweeds tend to have different traits. This seaweed

has an extraordinarily high level of strong anti-oxidants. The

seaweed offers immediate and noticeable effects to the skin,

these include increased firmness, fine lines are reduced, and

skin is hydrated and protected. It helps to stimulate the

production of collagen in the body. It strengthens the immune

system, increases vitality and protects against damage from

free radicals.

Fucus Vesiculosus - Bladder Wrack

When used in our Stimulating Body Buff this seaweed releases

polysaccharides such as alginic acid, and iodine (which

stimulates metabolism) as well as other minerals which are

Why certified organic?

Did you know that there are currently no laws to guarantee that health and beauty care

products labelled as organic are indeed organic? EU organic certifications only cover

farming and food production.

That is why VOYA has sought or is seeking organic certification for all of their products. This

means when you buy VOYA health or beauty products or have a VOYA therapy, you can be

sure that it has been independently verified as organic.

Soil Association

Founded in 1946, the UK Soil Association has probably the highest and most comprehensive

standards for organic production and processing in the world.

Often described as the”Rolls Royce of eco symbols”, the Soil Association standards have two

levels of certification:

“Organic”, where at least 95 % of ingredients are organic

“With Organic Ingredients”, where the product contains 70% or more organic ingredients.

The standards also cover manufacturing processes and labelling claims regarding the

products overall organic content so only the truth can be told.

The remaining ingredients that are permitted in the products must be proven to be non-GM

and can only be used if the organic version of that ingredient is not yet available, or they are

from a restricted list of synthetic chemicals that have been assessed against criteria to

demonstrate they have no detrimental impact on human health and minimum

environmental impact.

Note:

In many cases these strict standards make it technically challenging for

chemists and manufacturers to achieve certification, resulting in many

companies electing to go for the less stringent Eco Cert certification.

Irish Organic Farmers and

Growers Association (IOFGA)

IOFGA (Irish Organic Farmers and Growers Association) is Ireland’s leading organic

certification body dedicated to certifying organic produce and products throughout Ireland.

IOFGA has been at the forefront of the organic movement in Ireland since it was established in 1982. Over twenty five years of experience in inspecting, certifying and networking with

organic farmers has placed the association in a unique position to serve a dynamic and

growing organic market.

Organic products carrying the IOFGA logo has been produced to the highest standards. It is

produced according to organic farming principles which are committed to working in

harmony with nature rather than against nature.

In practice organic farming;

•Avoids the use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides

•Requires the highest standards of animal welfare

•Does not permit the use of genetically modified organisms

•Uses less fossil fuel energy per calorie of food produced

•Protects our biodiversity by maintaining suitable habitats for plants, animals and wildlife

•Encourages people to buy their food locally and in season

When you see the IOFGA logo on organic food and products you can guarantee that this

product has been inspected and approved to meet the organic standards.

Halal Certification

A Halal certificate issued by the Department of Halal Certification is an assurance that a

particular product has been investigated and found to conform to the Islamic dietary

regulations and is therefore, suitable for Muslims.

As part of the investigation process all the ingredients, additives, colours, processing aids and

catalysts are examined to ensure that the product is not derived and does not contain any

non-Halal substance. The certification will be done to the standards approved by the

certifying authorities in Europe, Middle and the Far East.

According to this standard:

All food ingredients and additives produced from animals which were not

slaughtered according to Islamic rite or from the pig are Haram and not suitable for

Halal consumption/use.

Any food product, ingredient or additive containing alcohol or produced with the

use of alcohol is Haram and unsuitable for Halal /consumption use.

All production/processing sites are visited by two officials to carry out the necessary

inspection to ensure that all certified products conform to the Islamic dietary regulations.

During the visit the officials will check:

The components used in the processing.

Source of components.

The manufacturing/processing of the product.

Packing of the product.

Storage and despatch of the product.

VOYA believes in organic and sustainable ways of doing business and would

not compromise on this. That’s why:

o VOYA has adopted organic and sustainable ways of creating their products.

o VOYA has been harvesting the wild organic seaweeds by hand to ensure the delicate

coast environment is not damaged.

o VOYA voluntarily submits their products to be certified by the organic standards of both

the Irish Organic Farmers and Growers Association (IOFGA) and the Soil Association.

o All of VOYA‘s products contain as much organic ingredients as possible (minimum 70%)

and are made without mineral oils, GM ingredients, or synthetic colours, fragrances and

preservatives.

o VOYA‘s products are packaged using recycled, recyclable or biodegradable materials.

o VOYA is opposed to the practice of animal testing in cosmetics research.

“Love Yourself”

Many of today’s beauty products are made up of varying mixtures of synthetically produced

chemicals and these chemicals vary in their ability to penetrate the skin. Some are absorbed

in small amounts, while some easily reach the blood vessels below the skin.

Many chemicals found in cosmetics do not cause obvious immediate signs of toxicity, but

might slowly damage us through repeated use on our skin.

Preserving Voya’s Products

Every product that contains water has a preservative in it. Conventional Natural products use

strong oils which preserve the product, but are quite pungent and can be irritating or much

worse synthetic preservatives like Parabens and Urea’s. We use a step process to naturally

preserving our products. This simply means instead of putting in one/two potent synthetic

preservative we use a combination of natural preservatives to achieve the same effect. For

example the first and largest natural preservative used in Softly Does It is Aloe Vera.
