Training InstructorsThe instructors at Blue Grass Airport are experienced and certified in airport rescue firefighting and airport operations. They are here to provide your group with a safe, informative training session. They offer first-hand knowledge of aircraft disasters experienced during their careers. It is our priority to ensure that you gain the expertise and experience needed to respond to aircraft accidents at your airport or in your community.

State-of-the-Art FacilityContinually improving to include the latest technology, Blue Grass Airport’s training facility offers students and professionals a comfortable and challenging environment to learn and practice their skills.

• Versatile classroom that accommodates groups of various sizes and includes audio/visual equipment

• Fuel spill trainer and Specialized Aircraft Fire Trainer (SAFT)—designed and built to replicate Boeing 737s

• Computer-controlled, propane-fueled equipment that simulates large-scale flammable liquid fires, engine fires, wheel and brake fires, and aircraft interior fires with rollover and flashover

• Modern control room with computer programs that simulate various training scenarios

• Frontline emergency vehicles to give students exposure to the latest technology

• locker rooms with showers

• Comfortable rooms for lunch and breaks; catering is available for an additional fee

response, high-quality training is paramount. Blue Grass Airport’s

Regional Aircraft Rescue Firefighting (ARFF) Training Center provides

safe, quality, cost-efficient training and will strive to meet individual or

departmental training needs through standard courses or a custom-

designed curriculum.

The Regional ARFF Training Center is situated on 200 acres adjacent

to Blue Grass Airport (leX) in the heart of central Kentucky’s scenic

Bluegrass region. The training center is easily accessible via multiple

airlines as well as Interstates 64 and 75.

Course DescriptionsBlue Grass Airport’s Regional ARFF Training Center offers multiple courses suited for entire departments as well as individuals. These include options ranging from one-day certification burns to multiple-day courses designed for an introduction or in-depth review of airport rescue firefighting.

Interested in exposing your structure firefighting department to aircraft accident response? We offer one- and two-day courses specifically designed for the structural firefighter.

ARFF (100) Basic Aircraft Rescue Firefighting Our Most Popular Course!The Basic Aircraft Rescue Firefighting course is designed to provide the knowledge, skills and techniques necessary for responding to all types of aircraft accidents. This 40-hour course is attended by beginner and veteran firefighters and meets or exceeds Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ARFF firefighter certification requirements of part 139.319. Significant hands-on, scenario-based training is utilized during the course and includes:

• Introduction/review of all 12 FAA required subject matters

• Significant exposure to live interior and exterior fires including the cockpit, cabin with flashover, wheel/brake, engine and fuel spills

• Victim rescue/disentanglement/triage including use of hydraulic tools

• use of the incident command system including full response scenarios from dispatch to overhaul

• Hands-on review of commercial and general aviation aircraft (varies with fleet availability)

• use of frontline crash trucks for vehicle evolutions

• In-depth review of past accidents and application of lessons learned
