  • FOREWORDThis Manual is issued by VicRoads to provide guidance in establishing a standardised system of signs, pavement markings and associated devices on declared freeways and arterial roads throughout Victoria.

In the interests of uniformity, Councils are invited to apply the requirements of this Manual to municipal roads.

A standardised system is essential to ensure that drivers acquire the information necessary to enable them to comply with road rules, and to navigate their way around the road system in a safe and efficient manner.

This Manual is to be used as the primary reference for road signs, markings and delineation in Victoria. As far as practicable, the principles and practices of the Australian Standard Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), AS 1742, have been incorporated in this Manual. However, the Manual varies from the Australian Standard in the following ways:

The inclusion of additional signs and devices, and variation in the design of some standard signs and devices to suit Victorian conditions. These signs have the letter V inserted into their serial number.

Amplification of the guides for the use of many of the signs and devices, and the inclusion of special administrative requirements where necessary.

Closer definition of device requirements where the Australian Standard permits discretionary options.

The omission of any signs and devices, which are not appropriate to Victorian conditions.

Further information relating to the use of Major Traffic Control Devices and delegations to Councils is provided in VicRoads Traffic Engineering Manual, Volume 1 Traffic Management.

This Manual does not provide guidance on temporary signing, markings and delineation, or traffic control. This information is available in the Worksite Safety - Traffic Management Code of Practice. This Code adopts the MUTCD, AS 1742.3, Traffic Control Devices for Works on Roads, as its core.

Enquiries relating to the Manual may be directed to VicRoads Road and Traffic Standards Section on telephone number 9854 2341 or via e-mail: [email protected]
