TRADITIONS SUMMER 2014p.2 www.costacatholicacademy.org

For many years there were rumors that a new parish would be established in the northern section of Galesburg because of the increasing number of Catholics in that area. Most Reverend Joseph H. Schlarman, third Bishop of Peoria, began plans for an eventual establishment of a new parish by the purchase of land on North Cedar Street and forming a parish corporation in 1948. However, before enough land was acquired adjacent to the proposed site, Bishop Schlarman died. After Most Reverend William E. Cousins became the head of the Diocese of Peoria, in a letter read at all the Masses at Corpus Christi and St. Patrick’s Churches on Sunday, July 29, 1956, that Galesburg’s new parish would come into existence on August 1, 1956. He announced that it would be dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary and that Father J. E. Lohan was being named its first pastor. The first Mass of the new parish was offered on August 1 at the Chapel of Galesburg State Research Hospital. Permission was given to use the Chapel until the parish’s own building was completed which lasted in all fifteen months. The first Mass was attended by a large group of parishioners and well-wishers and commemorated the deceased members of the Tey family whose last survivor, Miss Mary Tey, who died in St. Mary’s hospital, Galesburg, March 17, 1956, had willed thirty-eight acres of land at the end of North Broad Street to Bishop Cousins. It was decided that the ten acres fronting on Broad Street would become the site of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, School, Convent and Rectory, and that the remainder of the land would be the site of a future Catholic High School.Plans for building a new school were mentioned by Father Lohan in his first letter to the parishioners at the time the parish was organized. He appointed several of the men representing a cross-section of the parish to serve on the building committee. They were: Donald Vizard, Chairman, Father Richard O’Brien, and James Curran, Donald Lohmar, Pat Ostrander, James Pogue, Eugene Riley, John Sullivan and Eugene Tobin. These men met with the pastor and trustees frequently; they visited other new schools’ they interviewed architects’ they studied and restudied plans’ they advised the hiring of the West & Weber firm as architects. The parish owes a great debt of gratitude to these men for the long hours they spent in this work. While the planning of the school was taking place, another group was working on the financing of the structure. It was decided to have a fundraising drive beginning in November 1956. Over 100 men took part in the door-to-door solicitation of parishioners and the pledges amounted to $230,000 which would be contributed over a period of three years. The blueprints of Immaculate Heart of Mary School were let out for bids to almost thirty contractors early in March, 1957 So that work on the school could go forward immediately, ground-breaking

ceremonies were held on Laetare Sunday afternoon, March 31, 1957. Actual work began on April 5, 1957, but frequent rains hampered the early progress of construction. The rising structure soon became a destination for Sunday afternoon drives of parishioners and others interested in the project. The interest grew during the summer and crystallized when Father Lohan called for volunteers to help in certain phases of the work. A large number of parishioners donated their labor in painting the walls of the classrooms, corridors, chapel and other areas of the building. Another group laid the tile in the floors of the school. Still another group worked in mounting chalkboards and bulletin boards in the classrooms. These volunteers labored tirelessly night after night and saved the parish thousands of dollars and enabled the Immaculate Heart of Mary School to open September 3, 1957.

The first group of Sisters of Providence arrived on August 16. When the new school opened for the first time to 259 students, the faculty included Sister Mary Urban, Superior and eighth grade teacher, Sister Mary Bernardine, fourth grade teacher, and Sister James Mary, first grade teacher and five lay teachers. The teachers and pupils adjusted to the new surroundings quickly and the interruptions occasioned by the presence of workmen still engaged in completing other sections of the building.

Victor Davis, Costa Class of 2006, GHS Class of 2010 made his second Final Four appearance in the last three seasons for Illinois Wesleyan University men’s basketball (DIII). Victor said, “It shows all of our hard work paid off. It’s just a blessing. It’s nice being able to possibly play for the championship. That’s been our goal since Day 1.” Illinois Wesleyan made its sixth appearance in the Final Four and won the championship in 1997 with third place finishes in 1996, 2001, and 2006. Third place was not contested in 2012. In March of this year, Illinois Wesleyan traveled to Salem (VA) Civic Center and made it to the final four where they matched up against Wisconsin Whitewater with a final score of 62-71. Victor scored 10 points, gained 8 rebounds, 2 assists and had 2 steals.

Of over 8,000 National Merit Scholarship winners this year, two were at Galesburg High School, and those two were from Costa Catholic Class of 2010, Catharine Leahy and Alec Earp, a third was at Knoxville High School and she was from Costa Catholic Class of 2010, Katrina Soyangco. About 1.5 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered into

the 2014 program, of which roughly 16,000 were named semifinalist in September. Catharine Leahy doesn’t have a definitive career path laid out yet, however, she is interested in sciences and economics. She will attend Princeton in the Fall.Alec Earp is hoping to be a biomedical engineer and will attend the University of Illinois this Fall. Katrina Soyangco will begin her path in medicine at the University of Michigan this Fall. In order to have made it to the finalist standing, Leahy, Earp, and Soyangco had to submit an application detailing their academic records, honors and awards received. Outstanding academic record throughout high school, endorsements from a high school official, an essay, and a high-level performance on the SAT test encompass the requirements to become a finalist. During Knoxville High School’s graduation, words of wisdom included National Honor Society member, Illinois State Scholar and Valedictorian Katrina Soyangco speech, “You’re graduating,” Soyangco said, “sitting in your seats, celebrating your academic success with our families, our teachers and our friends who have supported us through our trials, successes and failures. In their eyes, we are success and we should be thankful.”

Sheila Ann Grone Roehlk, 72, Galesburg, formerly of Knoxville, passed away at 5:48 a.m. Thursday, May 1, 2014, at Seminary Manor. She

was born January 8, 1942, in Galesburg. She married William G. Roehlk in 1971; he preceded her in death in 2005. Sheila taught at Allen Park, L.T. Stone, Steele, Nielson, Cooke, and Galesburg High School. She was a principal at Allen Park and Costa Catholic Academy as well as a part time assistant to the Knox County superintendent of schools. From Supplement to the The Register-Mail, Sunday, January 30th, 2000Galesburg is fortunate to have a school like Costa as part of the community. Costa Catholic School is open to all faiths and offers parents a choice in educating children. Rich religious doctrine is incorporated into the regular curriculum as well as a separate subject. Costa’s dedicated teachers hold students to high academic standards which provide the public high school with enriched, industrious students. Costa students enter G.H.S. with a good background in academics, music, athletics, leadership skills and Christian attitude. A priority at Costa is to always keep tuition affordable for all families. The spiritual guidance and Christian values promoted at Costa are priceless. Catholic education has been a Galesburg tradition for 120 years.Sheila RoehlkAdministrator

Alumni Highlights

After Immaculate Heart of Mary School was built in 1957, Costa High School opened in 1964 and graduated seven classes before closing its doors for the last time in June 1971, a victim of declining enrollment and increasing costs. Catholics of the community met following the decision to close Costa High School and agreed to merge St. Joseph’s and Immaculate Heart of Mary into the present Costa Catholic School, which provided classes for students from grades K-9. The first Catholic board of education was elected after the merger and oversees the school’s policy. While change is generally viewed as inevitable, it is likely that the early founders of Catholic education in the community would be pleased with the end result of their labors.

Under direction of the Diocese of Peoria, Immaculate Heart of Mary School closed doors Friday, May 30, 2014 as part of the consolidation process.

DEVELOPMENT CORNER Susan Day, Development Director

The end of the school year nears and what normally turns into a time of stillness; will

not occur this year. Rather, this summer our campus will change once again. Before

too long, earth movers and construction crews will maneuver Costa Catholic Academy

into its’ 135th year of offering excellence in Catholic education in Galesburg. Proudly,

we will again provide Preschool-8th grade students an array of opportunities that

simply are not offered anywhere else in Galesburg. Hopefully, by the end of the next

school year, construction will be completed and all Costa Catholic Academy students

will be under one roof for the first time in the history of the school. This construction

also marks the first new construction for our school in over fifty years.

As construction occurs outside, all classes from preschool through eighth grade will

be housed inside the Costa building utilizing the building to its’ maximum.

There will not be a room available; nor a spare closet, and many shelves

have to be hung to allow room while we wait for the addition. There is

not an employee at Costa that will not be challenged. But, we realize we

are not the first to have to endure hardships as we build the future for

children. Rather, we look at what an exciting time in our history it is — we are part of

it — we are all truly blessed! Thank you to everyone for supporting Catholic education

in Galesburg, Illinois!

This construction also marks the first new construction for our school in over fifty years.

Follow-up from Winter 2014 Traditions article:

Corpus Christi Unveils New Gym in 1929

Upon receiving and reading the Winter edition of Traditions, Alice Johnson was able to provide additional information to the article that I think makes it a little more interesting. So here is the “rest of the story”:

Alice Johnson’s father, Mr. David Scott, was the first full time teacher at Corpus Christi High School with the remainder of teachers being priests. Mr. Scott, graduate of University of Iowa, taught Economics, Geography and Physics. He and the other lay teacher, Mr. Paul Reed were the basketball coaches at the game sited in the article “Corpus Christi Unveils New Gym in 1929”. Coach Scott helped build the Corpus team by hard work and dedication. He built his men into shape by constant drilling. He fought even when faced with inexperienced and young teams and led many teams to State Tournaments.

LOCAL SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS OF 1962

Vim, Vigor and Vitale

In late September 1962, Register-Mail assistant sports editor Phil Theobald reported that Vim, Vigor and Vitale produced a Corpus Christi football homecoming victory over Knoxville 14-0. Theobald wrote, “An abundance of Vim and Vigor was much in evidence as the Corpus Friars dominated play throughout the encounter. Fullback Guy Vitale’s offensive heroics completed the local parochial schools Triple-V recipe to the delight of the alumni at Lombard Field.Vitale scampered 44 yards to paydirt in the waning moments of the first half and scored the game’s only second half touchdown. Although playing hurt, John Hurt successfully kicked both extra points following Vitale’s touchdown.Knoxville was coached by Rich McKillip a former all-state player for Corpus Christi. McKillip led the state in scoring his senior year at Corpus Christi and went on to star for St. Ambrose University. Corpus Christi was coached by Jim Phalen and replaced Roseville as a member of the Little Six Conference.
