E s s e n t i a l l y , i n t h e e x i s t -i n g l e g a l f r a m e w o r k , i f F i r s t N a t i o n sp e o p l e w i s h f o r t r a d i t i o n a l h e a l i n gm e t h o d s d u r i n g t h e i r h o s p i t a l s t a y , t h e ymust b e c a r r i e d out s u r r e p t i t i o u s l y .

T h i s p r o j e c t i n i t s c o n c e p t i o n wasq u i t e d i f f e r e n t : a survey o f t h e H a i d ap o p u l a t i o n o f S k i d e g a t e i n t h e QueenC h a r l o t t e I s l a n d s , t o a s s e s s t h e i r use o f ,a n d b e l i e f i n , t r a d i t i o n a l N a t i v e m e d i -c i n e s . I t was a l s o d e s i g n e d t o assesst h e i r w i s h e s f o r acce ss t o s u c h m e d i -c i n e s a n d h e a l i n g p r a c t i c e s w h e n i n t h eh o s p i t a l . Many r e s p o n d e n t s i n d i c a t e d t h a tt h e y were unsure what t r a d i t i o n a lN a t i v e m e d i c i n e e n t a i l e d a n d t h u s h a dd i f f i c u l t y f o r m i n g an o p i n i o n onw h e t h e r i t w o u l d b e a p p r o p r i a t e i nvarious s e t t i n g s , e s p e c i a l l y i n t h e h o s p i -t a l . I n f a c t 1 6% o f t h e p h y s i c i a n s i n d i -c a t e d t h i s d i r e c t l y , a n d a n o t h e r 14%l e f t t h e q u e s t i o n b l a n k , when a s k e d f o rt h e i r d e f i n i t i o n o f t r a d i t i o n a l N a t i v em e d i c i n e ( T a b l e 2 ) . " T h i s meant t h a t I musts u r v e y p h y s i c i a n s f o r t h e i r a t t i t u d e sa n d o p i n i o n s b e f o r e a p p r o a c h i n g F i r s tN a t i o n s c o m m u n i t i e s . N o w t h i s h a sb e e n d o n e , a n d F i r s t N a t i o n s p e o p l ea n d t h e i r h e a l e r s must d e c i d e w h e t h e rt h e e n v i r o n m e n t i s r i g h t f o r c h a n g e .
