Traders@UST members come from a variety of academic disciplines, ranging from programs such as

Quantitive Finance, Global Business, Economics and Finance, Computer Science, Dual Degree in

Engineering and General Business Management. Members were selected through two rounds of

interview processes, assessing their analytical and quantitative skills, along with their global outlook.

Approximately 30 associates were finally selected to join this pilot program.

Past Activities

In AY 2016/2017, Traders@UST ran a pilot program for 30 selected associates, imparting members with

essential skills on technical and fundamental analysis of equities and equity derivatives, and providing

guest lectures to allow members to have a glimpse of real-world trading and interact with professional

traders.

Spring 2017 also saw the establishment of the Traders@UST Technology Team, made up of 5 Computer

Science majors and led by Brendan Tham. This semester, the team was tasked with designing a portfolio

analytics software in order to enhance performance and provided detailed insight into a traders’

portfolio. With assistance from advisors, the prototype is set to launch in September 2017.

In Fall 2016, Traders@UST focused its efforts on introducing

technical analysis to its members with a series of talks from

external speakers. It featured many industry veterans and

professionals, with topics ranging from technical analysis in

equities, derivatives and currencies to latest Fintech trends in

big data and cryptocurrencies. Throughout the semester,

members formed groups to manage a virtual portfolio with a

starting value of 500,000USD. With guidance from advisors and

board members, they presented their portfolio’s strategy and

performance to Paul Schulte, CEO of Schulte Institute of

Research and an esteemed panel of judges from Fidelity

International.

In Spring 2017, Traders@UST adopted a student-led structure,

with board members leading workshops on fundamental

analysis. Traders@UST was also very fortunate to have

organized a quantitative trading seminar series with support

from Yue Xiu Futures. During the seminar series, members

gained hands-on experience in creating their own trading Algo

and heard from ASTRI researchers and Yue Xiu Futures traders

on the latest trends in quantitative trading using machine

learning. The semester ended with a similar portfolio

management competition, which was judged by Patrick Chan,

an ex-HSBC rates trader, Yan Tung Tsui, the Investment

director at China Financial Services Holdings Ltd, and Cyril De

Lavergne, a trader at Infosmart Holdings.

Future Plans

In the upcoming AY 17/ 18, Traders@UST is looking to organize an Algorithmic Trading Workshop

Series with support from Yue Xiu Futures. We aim to equip members with the ability to automate

their own trading strategy using an algorithm, complemented with quantitative logic. In addition,

we are also implementing a research initiative through the research publications in order to deepen

members’ understanding in the markets. At the end of the semester, outstanding members will

represent Traders@UST at trading competitions such as the CME Futures Trading Challenge.

On the other hand, the Tech Team will be taking on a project to identify major Fintech trends

that are maturing in domestic markets and map out the timeline of these trends on a global

perspective using sentiment analysis. This will enable the industry to tap on the information to

position themselves for potential technological disruptions. The team aims to publish the report

in December 2017.
