This is a really easy and quick recipe for those approaching summer barbeques. I like to make a big batch andfreeze in portions ready for those spontaneous garden parties. Perfect with a nice cold glass of pinot Grigio or, forthe more blokey blokes, a beer.

Ingredients:

The RelishWith a very sharp knife chop the tomatoes into 8ths, add the diced shallots, the garlic, the chilli, the red pepper and the basil, then add enough oil to just cover the ingredients and stir well. Add salt andpepper to taste.

The BurgerIn a blender whizz up all the ingredients except the mince until a purée, mix in well with the mince and mould intoburgers.

Cook under a low grill to your liking. As long as the mince is fresh and of a good quality I like to cook mine tomedium rare so its still quite pink in the middle. I like to serve mine in a fo-caccia bun with crispy lettuce, bacon and a mature cheddar and, of course, the relish.

For the Relish

Spring is finally with us and the garden is now brimming

with new life and energy.

Plan ahead and commit to this year being the Year of the Gar-den! It’s a great time to review the layout. Simple changes toborder shapes can make a huge difference and with a littlethought, areas can be transformed.

When we are designing gardens we always seek to maintainthe long vista and not break it … this maximises the feeling ofsize within the garden. The end of the vista could be a farreaching view, a beautiful tree, or something a little more prac-tical such as a bench nestled into a scented border.

April is also a great time to plant as wehave warmer soil conditions and generallya natural supply of soft rain. It is also thelast opportunity to move existing smallevergreens and perennials. If you aremoving larger perennial clumps, take anopportunity now to divide the plants. Theouter growing section is the morevigourous and it is this part of the plant thatwill provide you with lots of summer colour.

If you are planning a larger planting project, it is always bestto seek advice before embarking on the journey as this willoften save you money in the long run.

April is a very busy period for the team atHowle Hill Nursery. We now have a largerange of fresh spring stock availablethroughout the nursery, including beautifulstandard Wisterias, a large range of strikingtopiary pieces as well as our eclectic mixof unusual show plants, together with thelargest range of specimen JapaneseMaples you’ll find anywhere!

Our Show teams are currently preparing forthe Cheltenham Jazz Festival. This will in-clude the VIP area, the central festival siteand the main bar. All of which will be trans-formed into a musically themed Jazz Jun-

gle including a piano, compete with water shoot and a vibrant, contemporary art installation by Lauren Delaney our in-houseartist.

The newly re-branded RHS Malvern Spring Festival will havethe Howle Hill magic present in a series of adventurous plantdisplays throughout the showground including the edible andherb based theatre stage for celebrity chefs James Martin andRachel Allen, together with local Asparagus champions at Co-brey Farms.

Other feature displays will be a ‘Jungle’ in the Food Hall, Vil-lage Green, Italianete water feature and a nostalgic entrancestatement using a 3-wheeler vintage Morgan car from Morganat Malvern.

Visit the nursery and view some of the beautiful stock beforeit arrives at Cheltenham and Malvern.

With the bonus of two Bank Holiday weekends in May there isno excuse not to get on with jobs in the garden! Growing yourown vegetables is an enjoyable and rewarding activity andgives you the satisfaction of knowing where your food hascome from. Nothing tastes sweeter than home grown toma-toes like Sungold or the cherry tomato “Super Sweet 100”. Ourrange of vegetable plants is increasing every week, individual courgettes, cucumbers, chilli and sweet peppersplants are now available alongside packs of cabbage, cal-abrese, lettuce and beans (packs of 10 at £2.99).

As they have proved very popular and suc-cessful in the past we are again stockingthe grafted vegetable range. A new addi-tion this year is the cucumber Mini Stars asit produces snack-sized fruits and hasgood resistance to Powdery Mildew andCucumber Scab. Interestingly, cucumbersare high in Vitamin K which helps to buildbone strength.

Just arrived is our Chilli Fiestarange of 12 different varieties.Starting from the mild Jalapeno(2,500 – 5,000) to the fiery BhutJolokia (1,000,000 +) as rated onthe Scoville heat scale. Chillies area source of vitamins A, C and E andeating chillies causes the brain torelease endorphins, making them auseful ‘feel good’ ingredient.

We are now stocking aquatic plants, exclusivelyfrom Beaver Plants (specialists in aquatic plantsbased in Surrey). We are providing a selection ofshallow marginal and pondside plants, waterliliesand deep water marginal plants. These are in in-dividual 1 litre and 3 litre pots as well as in 8 litreplanted contour baskets. We are pleased to addthis new range to our current plant collections.

In addition to our lavenders mentioned last month we are alsopleased to stock Lavandula xintermedia “Heavenly Angel”. This variety is a new introduction andhas appeared in the recent editionof the RHS magazine. X intermedia lavenders flower later than angustifolia (English) varieties and provide an extended flowering season. We willalso be stocking Heavenly Scent and Heavenly Night.

As continuous frosts are looking less likely why not take ad-vantage of the Bank Holiday weekend and start planting outsummer containers and baskets. Although some plants willneed looking after and some may need protection from coldwinds it is now safe to buy summer bedding and basket/patioplants. We are already stocking trailing geraniums, fuchsias, surfinias, million bells, verbenas, bacopa, diascias as well asother varieties. These are established plants in 9cm pots re-tailing at £1.69 or 5 for £7.00. Obviously, should we incur tem-peratures below 5°C at night we would advise you to protectthem. Also available are summer bedding packs includingalyssum, lobelia, antirrhinum, begonias, mimulus, petunias andgeraniums. They are still £3.49 a pack or 4 packs for £12.00with the exception of the geraniums which are £3.99 a pack or4 packs for £15.00. For larger quantities we have also packsof 20 bedding plants. Each pack contains 20 mixed colourplants of either trailing lobelia or marigold or verbena or petuniaor begonia semps. We are still also stocking our easy basketplants which have 6 mixed varieties providing you with thestarting point for creating your own containers or hanging basket.

As if to perfectly illustrate my recentcomments on collectables I have alovely story to relate from our Aprilantiques sale. A local lady decided tohave a bit of a clear out and entereda small number of items for auctionincluding three Pelham puppets shehad bought some years ago for herchildren, who are now grown up. Assoon as Smith’s catalogue went on-line collectors began to request con-dition reports and further images as

well as booking telephone lines for the auction day. In theend the puppets were sold to a buyer in the room (who in-cidentally had an amazing twirled moustache) for £1,600.It turned out that the puppets were of a very early and raretype and their excellent condition made them every Pel-ham Puppet collectors dream. The happy story ends withthe vendor reputedly dancing around the kitchen with ex-citement when she heard the news.

Not quite so exciting but perhaps more typ-ical was the sale of a Canton cardcasewhich was from a vendor gradually clear-ing out inherited antiques from a houseclose to Newent. Many of the items soldfrom this property come from a colonial-back ground since the family had been sta-tioned out in India during the early part ofthe 20th century. The intricately carvedcard case was estimated at £200/£400 buteventually sold to a Chinese buyer for£640 due to it’s high quality and almostperfect condition. Once again this high-lights the strong demand forChinese itemswith the Chinese now becoming quiteadept at online bidding and buying directfrom British auction rooms despite someinitial language and payment problems.

A Staunton chess set also made an excellent price in theApril sale after a determined battle between internet buy-ers, selling to an antiques dealer in London for £740. Theset dated from the early 20th century and came completewith the original Staunton mahogany box and key. Thecastle pieces were marked with a red impressed crownwhich is the key to identifying Staunton chess sets againstsimilar copies and was in relatively good condition. Chesssets can often be in poor condition - one can imagine tem-per tantrums could be responsible for some of these

knocks and dents!

Running with the toy theme a very dusty but sought afterBing carpet train made £170. A carpet train was the earli-est type of model train and was designed to be simply runalong the floor without tracks. This example was boughtby a telephone bidder who is a specialist tin plate toydealer from London.

There was a large collection of textiles and cos-tumes in the April sale andthis attracted a largenumber of buyers who mainly bid online. Manyofthe clothes on offer were from a local houseclearance but a stunning 1920’s blue chiffonbeaded flapper dress came from a retired local an-tiques dealer who used to sell on the PortobelloRoad in London. The dress was in perfect condi-tion with almost no damage – once again illustrat-ing how good condition is the key to achieving topprices at auction. The dress sold to a local antiques textiles specialist for an amazing £580.

Smiths next sale is on the 9th May and includes aspecial section for silver and jewellery. The salewill also host BBC2’s Antiques Road Trip whowill be filming during the auction – so do comealong and join the fun

SMITE is a MOBA-type game, like DOTA 2, LoL or manyother acronyms - with a twist: It’s third person. The char-acters themselves are colourful and full of possibility(they are mythological gods). Available online as a down-load, and then automatically updated, the process iseasy - that said, let’s get right into the details.

Special Features: Teamplay, Character Unlocks, Flexi-ble Roles, Ranked Multiplayer, Character Additions,Quick Communication

Teamplay: 9/10The map of SMITE is easy to navigate, but seeing theenemy team relies on two things: Line of sight (what youyourself can see) and the mini-map. This means thatteamwork is built in, since if someone on your team cansee an enemy so can you. Due to this, it seems instinc-tive and easy to work together further; the only issue isthat some won’t.

Character Unlocks: 8/10In some games of the genre, such as DOTA 2, all char-acters are free to use. SMITE, like League of Legends, does not follow that formula - however unlike LoL it’s alittle more generous with how you unlock them. Yes, youcan pay to unlock them. Yes, it’s easy and quick. But therate of earnings in-game is very fast and with a little goodtiming for bonuses each character takes 2-3 hours (atime which in my experience goes very quickly).

Flexible Roles: 10/10The balance of the game isn’t some delicate, all-impor-tant god (no pun intended). It’s viable - and often highlyeffective - to take someone outside their default role;Thor, for example (an up-close damage dealer) can be

turned into a precise, long-distancefighter with the right items. This al-lows endless fun and brilliant com-binations.

Ranked Multiplayer: 10/10Okay, I’ll be honest: I don’t usuallyenjoy ranked play. The added pres-sure, coupled with me inevitablymessing things up, makes it lessfun in most games, League andDOTA included. SMITE is a wholedifferent concept. It runs inLeagues, similar to how LoL works(a concept SMITE had first), but thebalancing is effortless and makesfor regular sunday games in a lot ofcases. It’s fast becoming myfavourite part.

Character Additions: 9/10While the constant addition of creative new Gods to thegame is amazing (with many I’ve never heard of) thereis one reason I can’t give this category a 10: Despite theamazing work and detail with which they make myth intocharacter, it’s not strictly original. That said I have noother complaints - the additions are regular and brilliantlyfun.

Quick Communication: 10/10It seems small, but the V key is prized in SMITE. Not re-sponsible for damage, the scoreboard, the item shop - itbrings up another menu. A combination of other keys(navigating through a brilliantly designed menu, if onethat needs a little getting used to) allows you to talk. It’sthat simple. While DOTA 2 has a wheel of 8 phrases(which you can choose from a much larger group)SMITE includes so many options that it’s quick and easyto talk to anyone, and if done well makes the game eas-ier and more rewarding.

Books for Beginners! The Hay Festival will begin on 22nd May, with familyactivities going on under the “Hay Fever” banner.

So this month we’re looking at picture books that canstart your child off on the road to being a lifetimereader. Here is a selection of books that are perfectfor Mum, Dad or grandparents to share with littleones.

Even tiny tots will love “CharlieChick” by Nick Denchfield, nowout in a new edition, with illus-trations by Ant Parker. Added toa cute story and fun picturesthis is a pop-up book with sur-prises in 3D! Little ones willlove pecking away with Charlieand seeing his beak pop open as he feeds atruly LARGE appetite. But will they discover someoneeven bigger than Charlie ?

Another fun book for very young childrenis “That’s Not My Piglet”, from Us-borne. As they search for the correctpig, little ones meet five friendlypiglets with soft ears and bumpy trot-ters to feel. There are different tex-tures to explore and simple repetitivetext to keep toddlers involved, as wellas a little mouse to be found hiding on

each page. The “That’s Not My..” series also includestitles featuring other animals including a bear, apuppy, and even a dragon !

Toddlers and beginner readers willenjoy the picture book “Ssh!We havea Plan” by Chris Haughton. Fourfriends on a walk spot a beautifulbird and hatch various plans tocatch it in their nets, but things keepgoing wrong ! If only the older oneswould listen to the littlest of thegroup who just wants to talk to the bird. Withsimple text, and a wicked sense of humour, this is en-joyable for beginner readers to discover as well as funfor parents to read.

Any child who loves animals and humour will lap up“Mr Tiger Goes Wild” by Peter Brown, with its de-tailed illustrations and playful style. Mr Tiger gets fedup of the super-polite people of his home city, stuckin their routines. He decides to try living in the wild. But being alone can be lonely and those little thingsthat annoy us most about people can be just thethings we miss. This is a sweet story about beingyourself, with the pictures of Mr Tiger deftly express-ing his changing emotions.

Children and parents alike will have fun reading thedelightful rhyming story “Oi Frog” by kes Gray andJim Field. Kes was voted a top ten children’s authorby The Independent and Jim won the Roald DahlFunny Prize in 2011, and their quality shines throughin this latest book. A bossy cat lays downthe law to Frog, explaining that all theanjimals have their own special placesto sit – hares on chairs, cats on matsand gophers on sofas. But what canFrog do, he doesn’t want to sit on a log! This book is brilliantly illustrated, andlaugh out loud funny as the animals’designated seats become more andmore outlandish – still rhyming with the animals’ names of course !

With the “Peter Rabbit Finger Puppet Book” youcan help your baby or toddler learn to love books, andteach them too. This is a counting book so there isno storyline to follow, but Beatrix Potter’s beautiful andnaturalistic illustrations show the animals to count up.Also, there is a little hole on each page of this board

book so that a finger puppet of Peter Rabbit canpop through. The puppet is attached to the bookso it won’t get lost, but you may needa bit of dexterity to wiggle Peter outof the current page and into the nextpage. Great fun for little ones up tothe age of about two.

Designing an outstanding estate is more difficult thanyou’d think. It’s not just a regular saloon with an extrapiece bolted on the back; it’s an exercise of expert crafts-manship for outstanding practicality and an exceptionaldriving experience.

Peugeot have hit gold with the new 308 SW. The estateversion of the European Car Of The Year 2014 was de-signed by the same team who created the stunninghatchback and, on looks alone, the results are stunning. The floating front grill and chrome frame, the stretchedand slender body shape and smooth curves gives theSW a refined and stylish look that certainly hints at thebrand moving up market.

With the wheelbase lengthened, the 308 SW offers idealdimensions to meet the usual expectations of an estateas well as a plush interior and impressive 660 litre boot. For extra convenience you’ll find a load sill that’samongst one of the lowest in the class as well as ‘MagicFlat’ rear seats which allow the rear seats to fold com-pletely flat and offer 1,660 litres of space.

But you’d expect all that from an estate determined to bebest in class, what really makes the Peugeot stand outis the way it drives. Thanks to the innovative Peugeot i-Cockpit the 308 SW is a joy on the road with a respon-sive and compact steering wheel that really does makeyou feel in tune with the car. Combine that with the Peu-geot knack for building a car with crisp and exciting han-dling, then you’ll soon discover why the SW’s hatchbacksibling wowed the critics throughout Europe.

Available in June this year, the Peugeot 308 SW hastaken the needed practicality and resourcefulness of aclassic estate and blended it with the all mod-cons of anaward winning hatchback. The result is an inevitable success.
