Customs Data Sources – The Good
• Tracks movements of goods across borders
• Cost effective data collection
• Comprehensive data source
• Consistent data source internationally
![Page 5: Trade Statistics Data Gathering: A Concept for the Future](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022062810/56815d52550346895dcb5c29/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)

Customs Data Sources – The Bad
• Customs frameworks do not promote Trade Statistics requirementsCustoms primary focus is collecting duty and safeguarding the
movement of restricted or dangerous goods
• The Customs declaration is a small part of a complex supply chain
Paperwork can be inaccurate - is the person making the declaration the one with the best knowledge of the goods?
• More identifiers are needed for analysis to reflect Globalisation (e.g. Intra-firm, Processing & Repair)

The Challenge for Trade Statistics
Exploiting administrative sources is most cost effective data collection - it is burdensome to build new data collections.
• Identify the real data requirement
• Get involved in Customs Developments
To ensure we get access to data we needTo build in our requirements from the start
• Pursue combined data legislative frameworks
Opportunity for an integrated approach
