RevisionsRevisions to trade data are made on a monthly basis, once final figures are received. In some months, revisions are negligible while in other months they are significant. Table 1 shows the revisions made to the May 2014 data after more comprehensive data became available.

Total imports for the month of May were revised upward to N$8.3 billion from the initial estimate of N$5.3 billion. The major upward revision was mainly due to an upward revision in the value of vehicles and boilers to the tune of N$2.1 billion.

Chart 3: Main export destinations

The leading regional export market for Namibia in the period under review was Non-SACU-SADC (Chart 4). It moved up three places from the fourth position last month to replace SACU in the first position. It accounted for 29.1 percent of total exports in June 2014, up 16.1 percent month-on-month and from 17.8 percent year-on-year.

Sea transport accounted for 41.8 percent of Namibia’s total exports, down from 59.5 percent during the previous month but up from 30.4 percent in the same month in 2013.

ImportsThe total value of imports is estimated to have declined to N$5.2 billion in June 2014 from N$ 8.3 billion during the previous month, representing a decline of 37 percent. However compared to the same month of the preceding years when only N$4.5 billion worth of goods were imported, the import bill increased by 14. 7 percent. The overall decline in the value of imports was largely reflected in the import value of mineral fuels and oil which declined by N$649 million during the month under review. Other items that contributed to the decline include expenditure on boilers that fell from N$1.1 billion a month ago to N$752 million and vehicles that fell by N$141 million.

Trade balanceDue to the movements in the country’s exports and imports as described in the main body of this report, Namibia trade balance recorded a deficit of N$2.3 billion in the month of June 2014. Although it was a recovery from the deficit of N$3.7 billion recorded in the previous month, it is still significantly higher than one year earlier and underscores the need to do more to stimulate the country’s exports.
