FOREWORD

This catalogue is testament to Peter Barker who simply never threw anything away. The family have lived at Knowl Hill (Cooks Hill) since 1835 when Matthias Oliver, Peter’s great grandfather moved there from Evershot, Dorset to work for Brunel on the Great Western Railway, excavating Sonning Cutting. His grandson William Oliver, a baker, married Minnie Henwood from Waltham St Lawrence and at one time they had a bakers shop in Wargrave. In 1933 their daughter Molly married Oliver Barker from Toutley. Oliver started up and ran Knowl Hill Garage and built the house behind it. He then built Woodlands House, cleared the trees and set up the farm. The garage was sold around 1936 when Oliver and his brother Arthur set up Whitehall Brick & Tile Works at Arborfield, next to the garrison. The enterprise ceased in 1995 when Thimbleby & Shorland were privileged to conduct the ensuing auction. Peter was born in 1936 and on leaving school went to work on the farm with his father, Oliver but lived with his grandmother at Cooks Hill after the death of his grandfather. The family milked pedigree Jerseys. Peter was still had one cow up until his death. He never married. Gaining access to everything buried under the hay and in makeshift overgrown shelters has been a major undertaking in itself – a veritable Aladdin’s Cave. The tractors and farm machinery have been used on the farm and maintained until the last possible moment and then kept for spares. Everything else was kept for sheer fascination and appreciation. Our auction on 3rd October therefore presents enthusiasts with the opportunity to secure rare and interesting models for restoration or recommissioning that may not otherwise have seen the light of day again.
