SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

A) TRAINING

1) Read the instructions carefully. Be familiarwith the controls and the proper use of theequipment. Learn how to stop the enginequickly.

2) Only use the Front Mower for the purpose forwhich it was made, that is, the cutting andcollection of grass. Any use not specificallyindicated in the instruction handbook can bedangerous and result in damage to themachine, and will also result in the annullingof the warranty and the manufacturer declin-ing all responsibility.

3) Never allow children or people unfamiliar withthese instructions to use Front Mower. Localregulations may restrict the age of theoperator.

4) Never use the Front Mower.

- When people, especially children, or petsare nearby.

- If the operator has taken medicine orsubstances that can affect his ability toreact and concentrate.

5) Keep in mind that the operator or user isresponsible for accidents or hazardsoccurring to other people or their property.

6) Do not carry passengers.

7) The operator of a Front Mower must carefullyfollow the driving instructions, particularly:

- The need for care and concentration whenusing Front Mowers;

- That control of a Front Mower sliding on aslope will not be regained by the appli-cation of the brake.

The main reasons for loss of control are:

- Insufficient wheel grip;

- Being driven too fast;

- Inadequate braking;

- The type of machine is unsuitable for itstask;

- Lack of awareness of the effect of groundconditions, especially slopes;

- Incorrect hitching and load distribution.

8) The Front Mower is equipped with a series ofsafety microswitches and devices whichmust never be removed, altered or tamperedwith. Removing these devices invalidates thewarranty and the manufacture declines anyresponsibility.

B) PREPARATION

1) While mowing, always wear substantialfootwear and long trousers. Do not operatethe equipment when barefoot or wearingopen sandals.

2) Thoroughly inspect the area where theequipment is to be used and remove allobjects which may be thrown by themachine (stones, sticks, metal wire, bones,etc.)

3) WARNING: Engine fuel is highly flammable:

- Store fuel in containers specif ical lydesigned for this purpose.

- Refuel using a funnel and outdoors only. Donot smoke while refuelling or wheneverhandling the fuel.

- Add fuel before starting the engine. Neverremove the cap of the fuel tank or add fuelwhile the engine is running or when theengine is hot.

- If fuel is spilled, do not attempt to start theengine but move the machine away fromthe area of spillage and avoid creating anysource of ignit ion unti l the fuel hasevaporated and the fumes dispersed.

- T ighten caps of al l fuel tanks andcontainers securely.

4) Replace faulty silencers.

5) Before using, always carry out visualinspection, particularly of the blades, seeingthat the screws and cutter assembly are notworn or damaged. Replace worn ordamaged blades and screws in sets topreserve balance.

6) Before mowing, attach the dischargeopening guards (grass-catcher or deflector).

7) Take care as the rotation of one blade cancause the other blade to turn.

C) OPERAITON

1) Do not operate the engine in a confinedspace where dangerous carbon monoxidefumes can collect.

2) Mow only in daylight good artificial light.

3) Avoid operating the equipment in wet grass,where feasible.

4) Before starting the engine, disengage theblades, shift into neutral and engage the

parking brake.

6) Remember there is no such thing as a “safe”slope.

Travel on grass slopes requires particularcare. To guard against overturning:

- It is advisable to use a rear counterweight(supplied on request);

- Do not stop or start suddenly when goingup or downhill;

- Always keep the machine in gear,especially when traveling downhill;

- Machine speeds should be kept low onslopes and during tight turns;

- Stay alert for humps and hollows and otherhidden hazards;

- Never mow across the face of the slope.

7) Stop the blades rotating before crossingsurfaces other than grass. When moving theFront Mower away from the lawn disengagethe blades and put the cutting plate into thehighest position.

8) Never operate the Front Mower as a Mower-deck with defective guards, or without safetydevices, for example deflectors and/or grasscatchers, in place.

9) Do not change the engine governor settingsor overspeed the engine. Operating theengine at excessive speed can increase thehazard of personal injury.

10) Before leaving the operator’s position:

- Disengage the blades and lower theMower-deck.

- Charge into neutral and set the parkingbrake.

- Stop the engine and remove the key.

11) Disengage blades, stop the engine andremove key:

BREAK-IN PROCEDURES

Your CM Mower wi l l provide long anddependable service if given proper care duringthe first 50-hour break-in period. During the first50 hours of operation:

1. Avoid“lugging”the engine. Operating in toohigh a gear under heavy load may causeengine lugging, which is indicated when theengine will not respond to a throttle increase.

2. Use the lower gear ratios when pulling heavyloads and avoid continuous operation atconstant engine speeds. You will save fueland minimize engine wear by selecting thecorrect gear ratio for a particular operation.Operating the tractor in low gear with a lightload and high engine speed wastes fuel.

3. Avoid prolonged operation at either high orlow engine speeds without a load on theengine.

4. Check the instruments frequently and keepthe radiator and oi l reservoirs f i l led torecommended levels. Daily checks includethe engine oil level, radiator coolant, and aircleaner.

5. After the first 50 hours of use, be sure toperform the maintenance items listed in themaintenance schedule.

LUBRICATION FITTINGS

NOTE: After every 50 hours of normaloperation, apply a good quality grease to thelubrication points listed below (refer to theRecommended Lubricants chart). Whenoperating under extremely dirty conditions,lubricate more frequently than every 50hours.

• Lift cylinder

• Front Lift arm

• Power Steering Cylinder

• Brake pedal shaft

• Dif. Lock pedal shaft

To lubricate these points:

1. Wipe away all old grease and dirt from thelubrication fittings to prevent dirt or foreignmaterial from entering as new grease isapplied.

2. Use a high pressure grease gun to force inthe new grease. Apply pressure until cleangrease oozes from each lubrication point.

3. Wipe away any excess grease.

DIESEL FUEL• Use clean, quality No. 1-D or No. 2-D fuel

• Use No. 1-D fuel if the ambient temperatureis expected to be lower than 4°C or if theloader is to be used at an altitude exceeding1524 m.

• Use No. 1-2 diesel fuel with a pour point of atleast -12°C below the expected ambienttemperature to prevent fuel flow problems incold weather.

• Keep dirt from entering the fuel tank.

• Sulfur content of the fuel should be no morethan 0.5%.

• Sediment and water content should notexceed 0.05%.

• Minimum cetane number is 40. Lowtemperature or high altitude operation mayrequire use of fuel with a higher octanenumber.

• Use properly mixed winter fuel whentemperatures are extremely cold. In mostareas, diesel fuel is properly blended forsummer and winter grades as ambienttemperatures change. In winter, use wintergrade diesel fuel only. Otherwise, the fuelmay cloud and block the fuel system.

Fan Belt

NOTE: Check the condition of the fan beltafter every 50 hours of operation. Check fanbelt tension after every 200 hours ofoperation.

A belt-driven fan located at the front of theengine draws air through the fins of the radiatorto lower the temperature of the radiator coolant.

When 9-11 kg (88-108 N) of thumb pressure isapplied midway between the belt pulleys, acorrectly tightened belt will deflect 10 mm-15mm.

If the fan belt is slipping, fan efficiency islowered, resulting in the engine running too hot.If the belt is too tight, the life of the alternatorbearing will be shortened. If the fan belt showssigns of cracking or fraying, install a new one.

To adjust fan belt tension:

1. Loosen the alternator mounting bolts A.

WARNING: NEVER ATTEMPT TO LOOSENOR TIGHTEN MOUNTING BOLTS WITHTHE ENGINE RUNNING.

ALTERNATOR

The CM mower 40-amp alternator is belt-drivenfrom the engine crankshaft pulley. It is importantthat belt sl ippage does not occur, or thecharging system will be affected. To adjust thebelt, see the instructions previously given underthe“Fan Belt”section.

Other than belt adjustment, the only alternatormaintenance required is to periodically inspectthe terminals to ensure they are clean and tight.The alternator cooling fan should also becleaned periodically.

When working on or checking the alternator,adhere to following precautions or alternatordamage may occur:

• Do not UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCESshort the field terminal of the alternator toground.

• Don not disconnect the alternator outputlead or battery cables while the alternator isoperating.

• Do not remove the alternator from the tractorwithout first disconnecting the negative (-)bettery cable. When removing the battery,disconnect the negative (-) cable first.

• To install a battery, MAKE SURE that thepositive (+) cable is connected first and thatthe negative terminal is connected to ground.Reverse polarity will destroy the rectifierdiodes in the alternator.

If the battery charge warning light illuminates,indicating that the alternator is not charging thebattery, check the fan belt and the wiringconnections. If these items are in satisfactorycondition and the warning light continues toindicate no charge, consult your SHIBAURADealer.

BATTERY

The CM mower is equipped with a BCI group35, 12-bolt battery with a minimum coldcranking ability of 490 amps at-18°C (0°F)

Make sure the battery connections are tight andfree of corrosion. A solution of baking soda andwater may be used to wash the outside surfaceand terminals of the battery when necessary.However, make sure the solution does not getinside the battery. After cleaning, wash thebattery with clean water, then apply a smallamount of petroleum jelly to the terminals toprevent corrosion.

In freezing temperatures, a good battery chargemust be maintained. If the battery becomesdischarged or run down, the electrolytebecomes weak and may freeze, causingdamage to the case. If you must add water, usedistilled water. Add the water just before usingthe tractor so that the water will mix with theelectrolyte during the charging process, thuspreventing the water from freezing.

To determine the battery charge, check thespecific gravity of the electrolyte.

Checking the Electrolyte Level

NOTE: Check the battery electrolyte levelafter every 50 hours of operation.

WARNING: ALWAYS CHECK THEELECTROLYTE LEVEL WITH THE MOWERENGINE OFF, AS AN EXPLOSIVE GAS ISPRODUCED INSIDE THE BATTERY WHENTHE ALTERNATOR IS CHARGING. DO NOTUSE AN EXPOSED FLAME AND DO NOTSMOKE WHEN CHECKING THE BATTERYELECTROLYTE LEVEL.

To check the battery electrolyte level:

1. Clean the top of the battery, then remove thevent plugs.

2. Add distilled water if the electrolyte level islow. The level is correct when the liquid is6.35 mm (1/4”) above the plates.

NOTE: Keep distil led water in anonmetallic container that is clean andwell-covered.

3. Install the vent plug after making sure thevent holes are not blocked. At below freezingtemperatures, run the engine for a period oftime after adding water, allowing the batteryto charge, which prevents the water formfreezing.

If you must inflate or service tires, follow thesesafety precautions to avoid injury or fatality.

• Make sure the rim is clean and free of rust.

• Lubricate both tire beads and rim flangeswith soap solution. Do not use oil or grease.

• Use a clip-on tire chuck with a remote hoseand gauge. This allows the operator to standclear of the tire while inflating.

• NEVER INFLATE TO OVER 240 kPa (2.4 bar)TO SEAT BEADS. If beads have not beenseated by the time pressure reaches 240kPa (2.4 bar), def late the assembly,reposition the tire on the rim, relubricate bothtire bead and rim flanges, and reinflate.Inf lat ion beyond 240kPa (2.4bar) withunseated beads may break the bead or rimwith explosive force sufficient enough tocause serious injury.

• After seating the beads, adjust inflationpressure to recommended operatingpressure.

• Do not inflate a tire unless the rim is mountedon the Mower or is secured so that will notmove if the tire or rim should suddenly fail.

• Do not weld, braze, otherwise repair, or usea damaged rim.

• Never attempt tire repairs on a public road orhighway.

• Use jack stands or other suitable blocking tosupport the Mower while repairing tires.

• Ensure jack has adequate capacity to liftyour Mower.

• Place jack on a firm, level surface.

• Do not place any part of your body beneaththe Mower or start the engine while theMower is on the jack.

• Before adding ballast to the tires, refer to theinformation in this manual on“MowerWeighting.”

NOTE: Do not underinflate or overinflate tires. Do not exceed maximum inflation pressure listed.

WHEEL BOLT TORQUE

Tighten the wheel bolts to the specified torqueanytime the wheel assembly is removed fromthe mower or the wheel bolts are loosened.

Front Wheel Torque132±16 N·m

NOTE: Torque for the front wheels is thesame for 2WD and FWD axles.

Rear Wheel Torque50±5.9 N·m

Check wheel bolt torque daily until torquestabilized.

PTO CONTROL LEVER ADJUSTMENT

Note: Adjust the PTO control lever linkageevery 100 hours.

1. The PTO control lever must move easily (soft),through the first 20% of travel. The remaining80% of control lever travel must have aresistance (hard).

2. At the point of resistance (20% into thecontrol lever stroke), attach a pull scale to thePTO control lever. A reading of 5 kgf (11.5Lbs.) is correct at the point of resistance (20%into the control lever stroke). A reading of 12-13 kg (26.4-28.6 lbs.) is correct at the fullengagement point (the final 80% of controllever travel). If the control lever stroke is notcorrect, or the amount of resistance on thepul l scale at the point of resistance isincorrect, proceed to step 3.

NOTE: The adjustment bolt on the PTOadjustment linkage uses left-hand threads.

3. Loosen the locknuts, 1 and 2, on the PTOadjustment linkage.

4. Turn the adjustment rod, 3 and recheck theresistance on the pull scale and the controllever stroke. Repeat this step until the controllever stroke and the pull resistance arecorrect.

5. Tighten the locknuts, 1 and 2.

STORING THE MOWER UNIT

A CM Mower that is to be stored for anextended period should be protected duringstorage. The following is a suggested list ofoperations to be carried out.

1. Thoroughly clean the unit. Use touch-uppaint where necessary to prevent rust.

2. Check the unit for worn or damaged parts.Install new parts as required.

3. Raise the lift arms hydraulically to their fullyraised position so the lift cylinder is in a fullyretracted position.

This will protect the cylinder rod surfacesfrom corrosion.

4. Lubricate the unit. Drain and ref i l l thetransmission, hydraulic system and front axlewith new oil. Drain the engine oil and refillwith new lubricating oil. Also clean the aircleaner.

5. If the CM Mower is stored or removed fromoperation for an extended period, specialprecautions should be taken to protect thefuel injection pump and the injector nozzleagainst corrosion and gumming during thestorage period.

• Before storing, the fuel system should beflushed with a special oil, a quantity of whichwill remain in the system when the engine isshut down for storage.

3-26

• Special diesel fuel system flushing oils areavailable from most oil companies. If specialflushing oil is not readily obtainable, mix 0.5liters of SAE 10 non-detergent engine oil with10 liters or No. 2 diesel fuel.

• Drain the fuel tank and pour 7 liters of thespecial flushing oil (or lubricating mixture) inthe fuel tank.

• Run the engine for 10 minutes to ensurecomplete distribution of the special oi lthrough the injection pump and fuel injectors.There is no need to remove the injectornozzles.

• Fill the fuel tank with No. 1 diesel fuel.

IMPORTANT: Do no use No. 2 diesel fuel forwinter storage because of wax separation andsetting at low temperature.

6. Open the drain valve of the radiator and theengine block. Flush the system, close thedrain valve, and fill with a 50/50 solution ofpermanent antifreeze and clear water.

7. Remove the battery and clean it thoroughly.Be sure that it is fully charged, and that theelectrolyte is at the proper level. Place it instorage in a cool, dry place above freezingtemperature. The battery should be chargedperiodically during storage.

8. Place blocking under the front and rear axlesto remove the weight from the tires.

A Commercial Mower that has been placed instorage should be completely serviced in thefollowing manner before using.

1. Inf late the t ires to the recommendedpressures, and remove the blocking.

2. Check the oil level in the engine crankcase,the common sump (for the hydraulic lift,transmission, front axle and power steering),and rear axle.

3. Install a fully charged battery.

4. Check the cooling system for proper level of50/50 solution of antifreeze and clear water.

5. Start the engine and allow it to idle a fewminutes. Be sure the engine is receivinglubrication and that each control isfunctioning correctly.

6. Drive the unit without a load and check to besure its operating satisfactorily.

CAUTION: TO AVOID PERSONAL INJURY:

• TO REDUCE FIRE HAZARDS, ALLOWTHE ENGINE AND EXHAUST SYSTEM TOCOOL BEFORE STORING THE VEHICLEIN AN ENCLOSED SPACE OR NEARCOMBUSTIBLE MATERIALS.

• DO NOT CLEAN THE MACHINE WITHENGINE RUNNING.

• WHEN STORING, REMOVE THE KEYFROM THE KEY SWITCH TO AVOIDUNAUTHORISED PERSONS FROMOPERATING THE MACHENE ANDGETTING INJURED.
