listen more to learn who genuinely does seek fairness and peace, we can contribute to everyone's well being. Especially, if we have the convictions and courage to be kind, no matter what. It is a great opportunity to demonstrate being responsible to our community. We have made a fair beginning on the new year. With a bit of promise from each of us, we can strive to use the time ahead to be a better person. Again, it is everyone's opportunity to be responsible. It begins and ends with kindness.

OPPORTUNITY FOR RESPONSIBILITY Daily we are emotionally bashed with the state of the world. Internationally we witness horrendous acts against humanity. Nationally, we have every imaginable concern dropped in our lap every time we turn on our televisions, read the newspaper, or listen to our politicians. Locally, on a closer level, there is much discord. Even when we live in a relatively safe community, as we do, we are not free from the internal assault that surrounds us like the air we breathe. Of all places, home should be our safe haven. Most of the time it is, except for certain times, like an election year. Community elections can sometimes impact us as much or more than national ones. Elections bring out the best and worst in many. How personally involved do we need to be? Do we take the time to do our research and pay close attention to what we see, or do we just follow the crowd and make decisions based on what our neighbor thinks? Comparing information and debating can be helpful, at least it is better than making choices without any foundation. But, we can question with respect...disagree with dignity...and choose with integrity. Remember, once the election is over, we may have leaders who still have enemies...we don't have to be one of them. These are our neighbors, our social family. Take care with words and action. If we make an effort to

Dear Friends and Neighbors: Welcome to the year 2016 and I hope that all of you have had a safe and wonderful holiday experience. The month of January continues to be somewhat normal for the weather it has provided. Unlike our friends on the east coast, we were lucky and missed the big snow storm but continue to have the up and down cold/moderate temperatures that this time of year can provide. Work continues around the City on various infrastructure projects despite the often challenging weather conditions. KC Water Services should have the insituform linings completed by the middle of February and planning continues on the creation of the two new pump stations. The staff continues to swap out the old water meters with the new ones and that project should be completed soon. Speaking of the new water meters, a letter was sent out to those residents affected that there was a billing calculation error when we transitioned from the old system to the new one. As indicated in the letter, if you should have any questions regarding this issue or need assistance, please don’t hesitate to contact City Hall. On a bright note, the audit of the City’s financial books was completed for the year 2014 and presented to the Board of Alderman by the auditor at our January meeting. As reported by the auditor, “I did not identify any deficiencies in internal control that I consider to be a material weakness”. I anticipate that the final report will be received in February and it will be posted on the website should anyone care to reference it. I am very pleased to announce that the new “steam table” has arrived for use in the kitchen of the Community Center and will be installed very soon. Also, we are very close to ordering the new chairs and they should arrive later this month. On a personal note, it has been my pleasure to be the Mayor for this wonderful city over the last two years and I now look forward to a return engagement. I am therefore announcing my candidacy for re-election on April 5, 2016. I will be hosting an “Open House” at the Community Center on Thursday evening, February 25th and look forward to sharing thoughts on the future of Weatherby Lake. So, please continue to enjoy this peaceful time of year. “February is merely as long as is needed to pass the time until March.” ~J.R. Stockton

CITY STICKERS WERE DUE JANUARY 1ST. The law: All motor vehicles owned by residents of, and regularly used within the City shall conspicuously display a motor vehicle identification license or “city sticker” in the lower left corner (drivers side) of the windshield of such vehicle, and in such manner that the license may be read through the windshield from outside the vehicle.

“MOTOR VEHICLE” shall mean any self-propelled vehicle having two (2) or more wheels and operated primarily upon public streets or highways. “OWNER” or “OWNED” shall include actual ownership as well as the rental, lease, or any other right to use a motor vehicle for a period of more than thirty (30) days.

SEVERE WEATHER DRILL

The National Weather Service (NWS) and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) have declared the week of March 13 – 19, 2016 as Severe Weather Awareness Week for Missouri. The goal of the week is quite simple: SAVE LIVES. The best way to do this is by being prepared. Everyone should have a basic knowledge of severe weather safety rules and have a severe weather plan in place. Knowing what to do, or where to go when severe weather threatens can be the difference between life and death. A good time for all Missouri citizens to practice their severe weather plans will be during the Annual Missouri Severe Weather Drill, which will be held Tuesday, March 15th, around 1:30 pm. In case of severe weather the alternate date will be Thursday, March 16th.

WATCH/WARNING Know the difference between a TORNADO WATCH and a TORNADO WARNING. A WATCH means ‘WATCH” the sky. Weather conditions are right for a tornado. A WARNING means a tornado has been sighted or appears on radar - TAKE COVER IMMEDIATELY. Listen to your local radio or television station for the all clear. Remember WATCH means WATCH THE SKY, WARNING means TAKE COVER! The police department recommends a tone activated weather radio for each home. Tone activated weather radios are available from several local stores.

ADDRESS NUMBERS Have you noticed the mail boxes in the city with the Kelly green address plate attached? The signs are a service provided by the SOUTHERN PLATTE FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT. This is a free service to any Weatherby Lake resident and includes installation. Applications are available at City Hall. If you have questions you may call the police department at 741 8111 or South Platte Fire at 741-2900. The green address signs can significantly aid emergency responders and may avoid delays in responses to your home.

LOCK YOUR VEHICLES

Please take the time to lock your vehicle when parked on the street or in your drive way. Groups of thieves are driving around the northland area targeting unlocked vehicles. Some windows have been smashed so don’t leave personal articles in plain view. This type of theft is occurring in parking lots also.

CRIME PREVENTION Keep a watchful eye in your neighborhood. Report any unusual circumstances to the police IMMEDIATELY. DON’T WAIT, DIAL 911

W.L.I.C. Update

Well, winter has finally arrived. Ice and geese are on the lake and activities have slowed down until spring arrives. There are just a few status items to be shared with you.

! The Zebra Mussel Re-education project is well underway and has been well received. Remember, all lake users 14 and older, are required to take the re-education course online (approximately 10 minutes) before they receive their 2016 Lake permits.

! The infrastructure for the gates at the Venita Ramp is installed and the arm will be activated as soon as the Fishing Club’s Christmas tree deliveries for the fish habitat/improvement have been completed. We anticipate the gates will be activated on or around February 1.

! The date for changing the current code for the combination locks at the C-Point and Venita ramps has been extended to March 1, 2016. Members using the ramps will be notified in advance of the change.

! The first lake clean up date has been set for Saturday, April 2. Volunteers will meet at the C-Point Pavilion at 9 AM. Please help if you are able.

! The second annual Lake Kickoff has been tentatively scheduled for Sunday, June 5th 3-11 at the C-Point Pavilion. Please mark this date on your calendar. More information to come.

That’s it for this issue of the newsletter. We hope everyone stays safe and warm this winter.

Spring Lake Clean-Up

The WLIC Environmental Committee will be sponsoring a Lake Clean-up Event on Saturday April 2nd from 9:00 to 11:00 am.

Volunteers are needed to help clean up and pick up trash accumulated over the winter in the access areas and along the shoreline. This is a great opportunity to directly improve the beauty and quality of the lake.

Please meet at the C-Point Pavilion at 9:00 am. Please bring work gloves. A few hard and leaf rakes are always welcome. Trash bags and bottled water will be provided. This is a great project for school kids needing volunteer hours.

We had about 12 volunteers last year but more will make it easier to attend to all the access areas around the lake.

If you need more information, contact “V.A." @ 816-206-4425. See you on April 2nd!

— The “Clean Team"

NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORS is adding a new category to our list of volunteer services to our community. The "Buddy Program" will be of special interest to those living alone. Every single will be matched with a neighbor who simply receives an email or quick phone call every day from the person living alone. This assures that if someone alone has a problem, that would normally be missed, that a caring neighbor would be alerted.

If you live alone, or know of someone whom you feel would benefit from this service, please contact us right away. We will also need lots of volunteers who would be willing to participate in this new program (receive one daily call from a shut-in, house bound, elderly, handicapped, etc. Please contact Pat at 741-1569

Ray (Buddy) Chambers

Our most heartfelt sympathies go out to Gina Chambers and family on their loss of Ray (Buddy)

Chambers. Gina and Ray were happily married 45 years and have two children. Ray was devoted to his family. He was a great friend to his neighbors for 28 years.

December and January were sad months for our community as we grieve the loss of several friends and neighbors. Please remember these good neighbors and families in your prayers as they mourn their loved ones.

Don Ray

We grief the loss of our good friend and neighbor, Don Ray. Don and

They both will be greatly missed.

Seigried Hanson

Our condolences go to Verlene Hanson on the recent loss of her husband, Seigfried. They have

lived at Weatherby Lake for 16 years. Seigfried enjoyed fishing and volunteered with the Fishing Club in various activities including placing the Xmas trees around the lake bed each year. Seigfried has 4 children and 13 grandchildren. He will be missed by his family, friends, and neighbors.

Brother of Linda Dean –

Paul Dean

Next Event February – No Meeting

March 10th – 7:00pm Community Center

We won’t have a meeting in February. But please join us for an important meeting on Thursday March 10th.

Did you know 1 in 5 kids goes hungry? Hungry kids are more than statistics. Hungry kids are more than sad stories on TV. And the stats are pretty scary: 1 in 5 children right here in the Northland of Kansas City go home hungry everyday. They ride the school bus with your kids. They play with your children during recess. And their need is real.

At Feed Northland Kids, it is their mission to change this story. In partnership with Harvesters – The Community Food Network, they work hard to provide these kids with backpacks full of food that keeps them going. It’s food that keeps them growing strong. Their goal is that no child in the Northland goes hungry.

2

Join us to learn more about their mission and how you can help. We will be setting up a volunteer crew to help assemble packs on April 21st. Even if you can join us then, please come to hear about their important work. There’s always a need for your help.

Together, let’s make sure these children never have to worry about what they are going to eat. Together, let’s make hunger a thing of their past.

Know Thy Neighbor February 20th

March 19th

On the third Saturday of each month, October through May, Weatherby Lake residents come together in small, casual gatherings in homes throughout the community to get to know one another. These gatherings are known as “Know Thy Neighbor” and have been a part of the Weatherby Lake social culture for 25 years. Here’s how it works……Guests are randomly assigned to the Host homes for an informal dinner or cocktail party, depending on the number of guests the host is able to accommodate. Neither the Host, nor the Guests know who the others in their gathering will be. Those who volunteer to Host an informal dinner party provide a simple entree and drinks (of the coffee and tea variety). Those who choose to participate as Guests bring a pre-assigned food item and, if they choose to imbibe, their own libations. Those who choose to Host a cocktail party provide party ware, and non-alcoholic drinks. Those who choose to participate as Guests bring an hors’ devours and, whatever they choose to drink. If you think you might be interested, just provide your name and e-mail address. The KTN coordinator will send an email to you the first of each month. If you want to participate, just respond to the e-mail and say whether you want to attend as a Guest or if you want to be a Host. The KTN coordinator will respond with food and host assignments.

The next Know Thy Neighbor Gatherings will be February 20th -- March 19th

For more information, or to put your name on the Know Thy Neighbor e-mail list, contact: Syd Shepherd, 816-746-8666 KTN Coordinator [email protected]

Is there a category below that you might like to be a team member? Typically, you would not be called on more than once or twice a year.

For general questions and information, contact Pat Medill, 741-1569 [email protected]
