2006 Release/ In the 70’s and 80’s Roger’sgroundbreaking electronic synthesizeralbums Cosmic Furnace (Atlantic) andAir Pocket (Bearsville) were hailed asmasterworks. A protégé of RobertMoog (Inventor of the MoogSynthesizer), Powell went on to createotherworldly synth textures for ToddRundgren and Utopia.

Quite a few years have passed sincefans have heard anything from formerUtopia keyboardist Roger Powell. Thelast he was spotted, he was part of abrief Utopia tour of Japan(documented on the Redux '92: Livein Japan DVD), yet rumors spread thatafter the tour, he had all but retiredfrom the music biz. Then, fromseemingly out of nowhere, 2006 sawthe appearance of Powell's first solorelease in a dog's age, Fossil Poets.Joined by guitarist/bassist Greg Koch(with producer Gary Tanin addingsome extra synth parts, as well),Fossil Poets is an entirely instrumentalaffair. But instead of focusing on theirplaying chops (as most instrumentalrock albums do), the songs are mostlyabout creating texture, including theambient album opener, "LoneGunmen,” and the robotic "FalloutShelter.” Elsewhere, Koch providessome tasty Jeff Beck-esque guitarwork (circa Beck's classic Blow byBlow/Wired period) on "Test Drive"and "Osmosis." Although Fossil Poetswon't be challenging the Dixie Chicksfor the top of the album chartsanytime soon, longtime Utopia fanswill surely be pleased with the albumthat signals Powell's return from the"missing person's list."
