Things to Do For

Valentine’s Day

by Jocey Yates

Are you stuck on what to do for Valentine's

Day? Maybe you just want it to be nice and sim-

ple or something really big. Whether its for your

loved one or just a friend, here are some ideas

you can do.

How the Heart Got Its Shape by Angel Miller My theory of how the heart got its shape is by

someone that was just drawing and making up things

by putting several objects together. However, histori-

ans have argued the source of the heart shape for

many years. There are many different legends of how

the heart got its shape. One theory says it came from

the shape of a seed, which symbolized fertility and

love. Also, there is a story about a woman who

dreamt of Jesus with a flaming heart, in the shape as we know it. She drew the shape, shared the story, and

years later the image was all over the world. The

shape began appearing in pottery, paintings, and

books over the next few hundred years. There are

more legends but these are the two that most inter-

ested me. The shape does not look anything like the

heart in your body. I’m sure these people did not

think it would be a symbol of love many years later.

“Powerball” winnings are so huge; a few weeks ago it

went as high as $1.58 billion dollars. As of February

are also smaller prizes you could win; secondary prize

The Difference Between a Teenager

in 1916 and 2016 by David Williams

Teenagers today may never think about it but

they have it pretty lucky. For one reason is that

when a teenager comes home nowadays they

may be only concerned in playing a video game

or watching television. But most teenagers in

1916 came home and were more concerned in

helping their parents on the farm. In fact a major-

ity of teenagers then didn't even go all the way

through school and some didn't even attend

school at all. Things like that were pretty com-

mon back then, and they had reasons to quit be-

cause they had to support their families. These

types of things may not have happened in your

parents but in your grandparents and great grand-

parents lives. Although they may not have gotten

as good of an education as teenagers nowadays

but their hearts were in the right place. So we

should be grateful that we can get a good educa-

tion, without having to lay out of school to help

support our families.

A Tight Fight by Kaylie West

On Friday January 29, Monroe

County basketball tournaments were

held at Tellico Plains High School. Tellico Lady Cubs

and Rural Vale Lady Panthers played a very close

semi-final game, but the cubs prevailed. The game

was a tight game but neither team gave up until the

game was over. The score ended up to Tellico Lady

Cubs, 32 and Rural Vale Lady Panthers, 31. So, this

meant the cubs went to play for the championship

game on January 30 against Madisonville Lady Ea-

gles. In the final showdown Tellico Lady Cubs ended

in second place in Monroe County basketball tourna-

ment.

Super Bowl Poll by William Hunt and

Chase Hunt

We went around

the school to see who eve-

ryone thought was going to

win the Super Bowl, the Broncos or the Panthers.

The school said the Panthers would because 58% of

the school (or 139 people) voted Panthers and 42%

voted Broncos (or 100 people). So on game day

we’ll see if Peyton Manning and the Broncos will

take it or if Cam Newton and the Panthers can win it

all. Here’s the final score from game day:

back at the most memorable Super Bowls.

MVP Joe Namath, QB, Jets New York Jets 16, Baltimore Colts 7

The Jets dominated the 68'-69' Colts in this

game. In regular season. Colts only lost 1 of their 16

games, so it was surprising to see them lose SB3.

This was also the first time the American Confer-ence won a Super Bowl. QB Joe Namath of the Jets

went 17 for 28 and had 206 yards. The Jets scored

one touchdown and three field goals. Baltimore

scored one touchdown, run late in the 4th, but could-

n’t comeback.

3. Super Bowl XLIX (49) Feb.1, 2015 MVP Tom Brady, QB, Patriots

New England Patriots 28, Seattle Seahawks 24

At #3 is the most recent, Super Bowl 49. It

was a great close game the whole way through.

passes in the Super Bowl, at 13. He also tied the record for being Super Bowl MVP 3 times. The

How People Around the World Celebrate Valentine’s Day by Catlyn McEmery

Above: Japanese love symbol Did you know that people around the world celebrate Valentine’s Day completely differently from

us people here in the United States of America? Well

if you didn't I'm here to tell you about it.

Did you know that people in China have two

festivals that they celebrate that are both similar to our

Valentine’s Day (Western Valentine’s Day). They

have Lantern Day, it is the ending festival to the Chi-

nese New Year period and Double 7 festival, (which

was only for girls) the day where girls would beg for

knitting and needlecraft from the goddess in heaven

Nu Kua or the goddess of creation. In Japan, Valentine’s Day is pretty much for

women. On February 14th, women give candy and

other gifts to men so it's kind of like our Valentine’s

Day, except women get nothing in return, except the

one day to really show their affection towards men.

On March 14th, is the reverse version of it where men

give women stuff to show their affection. They also

have another day on November 11th called Singles’

Day where the single people get to celebrate being

single.

In Korea, Valentine’s Day is 12 "Love

Days". They are celebrated on the 14th of every month. January is Diary Day, February is as you

guessed it, Valentine’s Day, March is White Day,

April is Black Day, May is Rose Day, June is Kiss

Day, July is Silver Day, August is Green Day, Sep-

tember is Photo Day, October is Wine Day, Novem-

ber is Movie Day, and finally December is Hug Day.

Okay, we all know of Paris as "The City Of Lights"

but did your know that it is also "The City Of Love?"

It is filled with the most top-rated romantic restau-

rants. Don't forget to take your love to see the entire

city of lights from above and climb to the top of the Eiffel Tower. This is how people around the world

celebrate Valentine’s Day.

gress, and as for the veterans, this is bad news for

Why We Laugh by Jonathan Ervin Do you know why we laugh? The reaction of laughter is put into steps. The first is the punch line of

the joke. After that, our minds start to process that

information. It goes to problem-solving to figure out

the joke. The brain then appreciates these step to

make us laugh

There is a neurotransmitter called dopamine

(a brain chemical). It is responsible for letting the

stages of laughter occur. Dopamine even lets us feel

good when we laugh. That is why it feels good to

laugh.

You probably didn't know why we laughed

before; maybe you were wondering why or maybe you never even thought of it. Now you can say you

know why we laugh.

Why Do We Want To Finish Things? by Jonathan Ervin Do you know why you want to complete

things? There is actually a label to this. It is called the

“completion principle.” Have you ever started a game

and felt like you just couldn't stop? This is part of the

completion principle.

You may ask," What about if we don't finish

things?" Well, if you don't finish then your mind

won't stop thinking about it. It will be in the back-

ground until you complete it. It keeps you thinking

about things, Which is why when you are doing noth-

ing you start thinking about things you were doing. "What about when it is finished?" you may

ask. Well, when you finish your mind just moves on.

Your brain leaves all interest and forgets about it.

Then, that task just becomes another thing we did.

Our brain just puts it in the attic to collect dust. It then

uses the energy it was using on that task to focus on

others. That is the completion principle.

Our Veterans’

Health Care by David Williams

People may never

think about our veterans'

health care, but this is a serious matter and problem.

Our veterans are having to wait for months at a time

to get the care they deserve from VA (Veterans Af-

fairs) hospitals. In fact, those having to wait a month

or more for appointments is 50% higher than last year.

The VA also faces a budget short fall of nearly $3

billion, which isn't exactly a small amount. Also in the

last year, the VA has increased capacity by more than

7 million patient visits per year. Doctors and nurses

have handled 2.7 million more appointments than in

Winter Trends by Kadyn Chastain

It's finally cold enough to wear our favorite winter

clothes. Here are some of our cold weather fashion

trends. A fashion trend is a clothing item that is popu-

lar at that certain time.

1. The scarf Let a little bit of scarf hang off to

one shoulder. Start twisting your

scarf and wrapping it around your

neck twice. Then tuck the scarf un-

der the twisted section to secure,

and let the longer scarf strands hang

down. This is a popular way to wear a scarf.

(“Urlsa” Scarf by Aokong)

2. Boot socks

You can wear boot socks with two

different types of boots: tall boots

or short ones. With short boots, you can wear them with dresses,

leggings, or skinny jeans.

3. Boots

Need I say more? Boots keep your

feet warm and look great with

skirts, dresses, leggings, and

jeans. They are definitely worth

the investment! (Boots by

Interesting Facts About Tennessee by William Hunt

What makes so many people call Tennessee

home? Well, turns out it's very interesting. Tennessee

is home to many features that other places do not

have. Along with a temperate climate, beautiful scen-ery, and a lower cost of living, many people have

chosen to call Tennessee home. The Lost Sea in

Sweetwater is the largest underground lake in the

United States. Davy Crockett was born near Greene-

ville, Tennessee. The Great Smoky Mountains Na-

tional Park is America's most visited national park.

The world's largest cedar bucket is in Murfreesboro;

capable of holding 1,566 gallons. That equals 16,704

cans of Coke, which is enough to drink one Coke a

day for 45 years. The first mini-golf course was lo-

cated in Chattanooga. Hope these facts make you feel proud about the great Volunteer state.
